firefox lockups after update
by Vincent
Hello,
I submitted this problem before, I had one answer requesting the output
of "yum info firefox" I submitted, If there was a subsequent answer
maybe I missed. So here I have an HP laptop zv600 and a desktop Dell
8300. Dell works fine through out all the update, HP lockup and after
several try uninstall and reinstall doesn't lock any longer but it
doesn't load.
here are the yum info for both PC:
Dell desktop

Floppy problem temporarelly solved
by Vincent
Hello,
I for while trying to get the floppy drive to work, then today I found a
suggestion in one of bugzilla to use the "modprobe floppy" command to
get the floppy to appear in the computer, that worked, but still could
not access the floppy but now aloud me to mount floppy by entering the
fallowing commands:
#mkdir /media/floppy
#mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /media/floppy
Now the floppy Icon appeared in the desktop, it works fine, the floppy
Icon under the computer, however, still does not work.
I hop that some expert will understand better what is going on and be
able to fix. This work around is only temporary it appear that must be
repeated on every reboot.

BCM57780 in Dell Precision T1500 ?
by Karl-Olov Serrander
Hi !
I have problems configuring network in rescue mode in Fedora 12 on this machine, finds no network interface.
Standard F12 x86_64 DVD does not recognise the chip.
Booting F12 Unity respin x86_64 (kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3) lspci detects the chip as BCM57780, but:
dmesg says:
tg3.c:v3.99 (April 20, 2009)
tg3 0000:02:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
tg3 0000:02:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
tg3 0000:02:00.0: PME# disabled
tg3 mdio bus: probed
eth%d: No PHY devices
tg3: Problem fetching invariants of chip. aborting
tg3 0000:02:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
I will need to kickstart this machine in the future, so a solution with a driverdisk
would be fine.
Any suggestions ?
Regards

F12 - Why is root having 2x better performance when running glxgears than "normal" user?
by jaivuk
Hi guys,
I'm running kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.i686 on Acer Aspire One.
For the purpose of this test I disabled cpuscaling so CPU is running at the
full speed 1600Mhz:
When I'm running glxgears as normal user I get this stats:
526 frames in 5.0 seconds = 105.186 FPS
547 frames in 5.0 seconds = 109.283 FPS
565 frames in 5.0 seconds = 112.826 FPS
521 frames in 5.0 seconds = 104.118 FPS
562 frames in 5.0 seconds = 112.389 FPS
558 frames in 5.0 seconds = 111.434 FPS
However when I'm running it as root I get:
1229 frames in 5.0 seconds = 245.583 FPS
1220 frames in 5.0 seconds = 243.777 FPS
1228 frames in 5.0 seconds = 245.375 FPS
1225 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.774 FPS
1182 frames in 5.0 seconds = 236.090 FPS
1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 239.892 FPS
I would expect some difference but not as huge (more than 2x).
Latencytop shows that glxgear spends most of the time on "Scheduler: waiting
for cpu" in both scenarios.
I also tested gtkperf and I did not see the same behaviour - root was less
than a second faster in overall test but normal user was faster
in GtkDrawing tests.
Do you have any explanation for glxgears results?
Thank you,
Jaiv

Fedora box with RHEL subscription
by Michael Cronenworth
Has anyone ever tried adding a RHEL subscription to a Fedora 11/12 box
before?
I attempted to use rhn_register, but after giving it my RHN credentials,
which are valid, I receive a Python traceback[1] and it quits.

USB wireless that works-out-of-box?
by Matthew Miller
Hi. Can anyone recommend a USB wireless card which works out-of-the-box with
Fedora? I installed Fedora on my dad's laptop, very successfully, but the
system has some hardware issues with the built-in wireless (it was
problematic in Windows too). So he wants to just get an add-on.
Unfortunately, this seems to be a compatibility minefield -- can anyone
suggest something that will just work for him? (No ndiswrapper, please!)
Thanks!
