Boost Thread Library not recongnized in Fedora 13
by Tibi Turbureanu
Hello, Fedorans!
I am trying to build Wesnoth 1.9.2 on Fedora 13 with scons.
It reports me that I am missing the Boost Thread Library,
Checking for Boost thread library... (cached) no
but I checked and already have installed the development headers for
Boost and Boost Thread:
$ sudo yum install boost-devel boost-thread
...
Setting up Install Process
Package boost-devel-1.41.0-9.fc13.x86_64 already installed and latest
version
Package boost-thread-1.41.0-9.fc13.x86_64 already installed and
latest version
Nothing to do
Package boost-devel contains thread development headers, as FranciscoD
stressed on #fedora:
$ rpm -ql boost-devel | grep 'thread'
...
/usr/include/boost/thread.hpp
/usr/include/boost/thread/future.hpp
...
As a workaround, I have commented out scons checking for Boost Thread
in SConstruct file:
conf.CheckBoost("thread") and \
However, the build failed eventually failed:
asio_sender.cpp: [...]: undefined reference to
`boost::thread::start_thread()'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
scons: *** [wesnoth] Error 1
Am I missing something? Do I need to install one more package or set a
variable with boost-thread path , or hack SConstruct?
Any ideas? :-)
Thanks,
-tct

Init fails on FC14
by Heinz Diehl
Hi,
after a boot into Gnome and opening a root console,
switching to runlevel 3 (or whatever) fails. "init 3" or "telinit 3"
does simply nothing, and the box begins to lock up. There's no problem to
boot into runlevel 3 or whatever.
Does anybody here encounter the same, and know a solution?

Reinstall -- Kernel panic
by Robert Moskowitz
I am reinstalling Fedora 12 on a system. I specified a custom partition
layout and then I just reselect the partitions and format them, putting
the same directories on each. I have done this 4 times on this system,
as I develop my install procedure.
Well today after I do the reboot, I get:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unalble to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)
So before I try yet again (it failed with my ks.cfg, so I did it the
long-hand way).
What is the problem and how do I fix it? Will a 'simple' rebuild of the
partition table by removing all the partitions then reconfiging them as
I want will work, or will this take a bigger hammer?

SElinux (again)
by Jeffrey Ross
I'm running into a problem again with SElinux, I've put SElinux into
permissive mode and its working again.
Using exim for the mailer and pgsql for the domain/username etc I get a
permission denied when exim attempts to access postgres, the actual
error message is "PGSQL connection failed: could not connect to server:
Permission denied"
Ok so what do I need to tell SElinux to make it work again? Also where
do I find the logs for what SElinux is doing? or at least temporarily
enable logging?
Also some more information, I just changed the name of the machine along
with its IP address, I suspect that has something to do with the problem
as I also can't get ssh to authenticate with public/private keypairs.
Thanks, Jeff

Using ionice -c3 in f13: system seems less responsive than under f12
by John Pilkington
Hi: My system spends a lot of its time processing video data, often
with not much numerical processing involved - just remuxing or making an
iso image. atop often shows disk activity above 90%. I do most of this
using ionice -c3, (ie 'idle' scheduling) which is supposed to reduce
impact on other tasks. The man page says "The impact of idle io
processes on normal system activity should be zero" and certainly
under f12 that seemed at least approximately true; but under f13
terminal response is often very sluggish when these tasks are running.
Using kde 4.5.3, scheduling elevator=deadline (as in f12).
Am I expecting the right thing? Does anyone else see this?

rpm deduplication question
by Robert G. (Doc) Savage
I don't know when/how this happened, but I'm sure there's a faster way
to fix this problem. My trusty old 32-bit F13 laptop seems to have
several duplicate packages on it. For example:
# rpm -qa | grep foofile
foofile-1.0-fc14.noarch
foofile-1.0-fc13.noarch
The fc14 file is a "sooner" that shouldn't be there. If I use rpm -e to
remove it, I suspect I'm removing all the files that also belong to the
fc13 package. If I try to remove the fc13 package with the intent of
immediately re-installing it, dependency hell often breaks out.
Isn't there an rpm argument set that will allow me to simply
"overinstall" a currently-installed package, replacing any missing
files? I've tried 'rpm -ivh --replacepkgs' without success. The man page
for rpm could be a bit clearer.
If I can clean this all up, I want to run preupgrade and bring it up to
F14 with a minimum of muss & fuss.

F12 -> F14 (via preupgrade), not so smooth
by Kevin Cummings
Last night, after I successfully upgraded my F13 test desktop from
F13->F14 w/preupgrade, I started the same operation on my F12 laptop.
The results were not so good.
X86_64, Asus S96J laptop, w/ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 video card,
IPW3945, 2GB RAM, 350GB disk.
1) I had recently installed WICD (from ATRpms, so shoot me) because it
worked better for me than NetworkManager under F12. Under F14, it fails
to start properly (yes, its the fc14 version now). So, I disabled it
and re-enabled NetworkManager. I have networking back for now.
2) X11 no longer starts up. I'm using the radeon driver for my ATI
Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600]. It was working just fine
(as fine can be with the radeon driver), but now it dies with a seg
fault with only 3 frames on the stack. I have re-configured to run the
VESA driver, but, I miss my 1200x800 native resolution. VESA can only
do 1024x768. I can attach my (used to be working) xorg.conf for anyone
interested, but it fails in exactly the same way if I delete it as well.
I can try again and send along an Xorg.0.log if it will help.
2a) VESA has lots of problems returning to a proper video mode. If I
run dosbox in full-screen mode, when it returns to X11, the resolution
is less than stellar. Its the same size, but it seems like every other
pixel is missing. Heck, All I have to do is switch to a diferent
virtual console, and X11 is hosed when I return to it. Even the color
pallette seems to be changed. I have to logout and restart the X server
to get it back.
3) VMWare-Server won't compile. Seems it can't find the kernel
headers. Its looking in /usr/src/linux/include, but that directory
seems to be missing. (I built it successfully a number of times under
F12.) I have kernel, kernel-devel, and kernel-headers installed. That
used to be enough for VMWare-server.
4) There are a number of python errors during bootup. They are not in
DMESG.
5) the console screen during bootup contains lines starting with [ [
mmm.nnnn ] messages that were not visible on F12. It makes looking
at the [OK] and [Failed] service messges difficult.
I'm sure I've missed something else (I haven't tested suspend/hibernate
yet), but for now, this is what I've noticed.
Imagine my surprise at No Network and No Graphics after completion of
preupgrade. Not a lot of fun.
I still have an F11 server that I need to upgrade, but not until I get
my laptop's problems sorted out.
And, for those of you who are still reading, yes, I have read both the
F13 and F14 release notes, but nothing stands out (to me) that I may
have missed.
Suggestions welcome.

iso dvd
by Adil Adil
Hi,
I downloaded the iso of dvd fedora 12.
I burned the downloaded file to a dvd.
Now the problem is that nothing happens when i restart the computer. My settings are correct (i can boot from win XP cd for example).
When i burned fedora the name was changed. Can this be the error?
The file name in my dvd now is "Fedora-12-i386-DVD_4 (0).iso" instead of the original "Fedora-12-i386-DVD_4.iso".
Any suggetions?
Thanks
