issue running fsck DMESG clip included
by Howard Howell
Hi.
I am currently running FC12. I am working on upgrading my system and
going to a 64 bit system, because I know I have some issues in this
hardware (slowdowns, internet issues etc.) they have been niggling for a
few months now, and I have been gathering cpu bucks to replace it. So
first I wanted to run fsck to clean the disks, then do a backup, and
finally to replace the system and move to FC14 64 bit. First step did
not work.
I have seen messages in the boot process indicating errors in the ATA1
section, although the system appears to be working reasonably well
(given the niggling h/w errors I knew about). This is new.
I wanted to run fsck, so I booted from the install disk for FC12 and
opted for the command line without mounting the disks. when I attempted
to run fsck for /dev/sda1 I received errors that the system could not
run on an LVM volume. How do I overcome this issue? And if LVM's
cannot be checked with fsck, how do I ensure that I do not generate
LVM's on the new installation of FC14 (sorry, I know that is two
questions...) I will send a separate question for the LVM/FC14 issue.
Anyway, I could not capture the output message from the command prompt,
and wasn't bright enough to write it down. I will try it again if some
one needs the exact messages to help me.
regards,
Les H

gnome-pm execute a command on resume
by François Patte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Bonjour,
I can suspend and resume successfully my laptop. One thing only is not
working on resume:
I had to add this command in my /etc/rc.local to have bluetooth working:
hid2hci
When the laptop resumes from suspend, this command has to be run to have
the bluetooth services on.
Where do I have to put this command if I want it executed automacally on
resume?
Thank you.

External harddrive not spinning down on suspend
by Norit
Hi everyone,
I switched from opensuse to Fedora recently and I really like it so far,
I am however having some troubles with my external usb harddrive. On
opensuse the harddrive usually spun down when I sent my notebook into
suspend mode and spun up again as soon as I accessed it after resuming
the notebook. In Fedora the harddrive just keeps spinning when I send
the notebook into suspend and is not accessible after resume. Even
worse, the next suspend fails. Does anyone have any ideas on why or
where to start searching for a solution?
I am using Fedora 14 with all updates installed, the external harddrive
is a Seagate 1,5 TB drive in an icy box with a JMicron Chip, here's the

Re: command wvdial not found
by Adil Adil
Hi,
the link you gave me does not work. No way to find something like wvdial.
I guess the solution at this point is just wait until i'll find another way to connect to internet in fedora.
Thank you

Of cource it needs an internet connection to work, Either that or you must have a local repo.
Try.
Boot into Windows if you have it.
Download wvdial from
<http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/fedora/linux/releases/12/Everything/i386/os/...>
Use x86_64 if you have a 64 bit system
Copy it to a USB key
Boot into fedora.
copy wvdial to local disk
Them
yum localinstall wvdial

VirtualBox VBoxVMM.so: cannot open shared object file
by Tod Thomas
The full messages is:
VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain:
dlopen("/usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: VBoxVMM.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
The VBoxVMM.so file is in the same directory as the VirtualBox.so file.
Also:
ldd /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox.so
linux-gate.so.1 => (0x00bec000)
libXinerama.so.1 => /usr/lib/libXinerama.so.1 (0x00110000)
libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 (0x00961000)
VBoxVMM.so => /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxVMM.so (0xb7625000)...
shows its in the correct dir.
This thread suggests it has something to do with glibc:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=645500
This thread suggests it has been fixed:
https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1465
If all of this information is correct will it soon become part of the
FC13 yum update stream?

Thanks for the heads up on this, Peter.
Is there any on-line source where this problem is described that you
might remeber?. Complaints, gripes, blog posts, all welcome. :)

Turn off GDM
by Konstantin Svist
Hi,
Is it possible to turn off GDM and auto-login the user, instead?
Note: I can probably go through the startup scripts and figure out how
to hack it together, the question is more along the lines of "is there a
commonly used place where this is done?"
1st guess: change defaultinit to 3, set user to auto-login in tty (how?)
and run startxfce4 in user's .bashrc
Thanks

Problems with Apache virtual host on FC12
by Robert Moskowitz
I have a number of virtual hosts on this system. All works but
Mailman. I had it working, then saved a bunch of files and rebuilt the
system. Problem is I did not save /etc/httpd/conf.d/1004-mailman.conf
(built from a virtual host template and the mailman.conf file).
When I enter mailman.foo.com/mailman, I wait a while and end up at the
system's default host's main page. How can I trace what is going
wrong? There is no activity in /var/log/http/error_log or the virtual
host's error_log. Or perhaps you might see an obvious error...

X server crashed in FC14
by Abu Attar Musharih
Dear List,
I unistalled the Firefox-3.6.12 on FC14 and keep only the Opera. I
also unistalled the evolution which I never run it. Just after that
process, the X server crashed. The screen suddenly became dark.
Pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 was able to show the console which I could
re-login. Now I can not run X server anymore. If I reboot the box, it
does not show login window. it stops somewhere just before run level
3. Only after pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 can bring the console up. I
noticed that some commands of the gnome was missing from the /usr/bin,
also some gnome modules missing from the /usr/lib/. I tried to copy
those from another FC14 box but this did not fix the problem.
Of course I can re-install FC14 again but I am sure that is not the
only way of fixing it.
Any kind of suggestion will be highly appreciated.
