HP dm3t Laptop Brightness Adjustment
by Brian Hanks
I recently got a new laptop, an HP dm3t (Core i3-380UM+Intel HD
Graphics). It's a great machine except that I am not able to adjust the
screen brightness in Fedora 14 x86_64. The Fn keys are recognized, the
brightness pop-up indicates that an adjustment has been requested, but
the screen remains on the brightest setting. I've also validated the
brightness values in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 are being
adjusted. It just seems that they aren't being recognized.
I've tried to pass the following acpi kernel params, but the attempts
have failed, causing the Fn keys and adjustments to stop working:
acpi_osi=Linux
acpi_backlight=vendor
Any thoughts on what I should try next?
Thanks,
-Brian

I have an i7 processor running F14 and I see 8 instances of the radeon driver and only one card in the system:
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV730XT [Radeon HD 4670]
$ ps -af | grep radeon
root 155 2 0 03:22 ? 00:00:00 [radeon/0]

Blank box on KDE desktop
by slamp slamp
I am running Fedora 14 with KDE. For some reason there is a blank box
on my desktop. It is not a widget because I cannot remove it. It seems
to only happen with the effects turned on for KDE. Anyone know what
this is?

Clock skew on FC13
by Alex
Hi,
What could be the cause of significant clock skew? The PC operated
fine for quite some time, and either something changed or there is
something wrong with the motherboard, but the clock could skew an hour
in less than a 24 hour period. The PC is usually completely idle. It
has all regular x86_64 FC13 updates applied.
I've done a bit of searching online, but haven't had much success. How
can I go about troubleshooting this?
Thanks,
Alex

Helping with Hardware
by Jonathan Gardner
I've been using Linux for over 10 years, and I've been with Red Hat
since the 7.2 days and I've been using Fedora since it was first
announced.
I've never gotten around to dealing with hardware issues seriously,
instead content to let things be and just hope the next release fixes
the problems I see. (It's surprising how well wait-and-upgrade works
as a strategy in Fedora!)
My question is, how can I contribute to Fedora and thus the larger
Linux community through getting my hardware better supported? Or is it
just not suitable for a lay-person who knows how to program but
doesn't already have a background in these things to get involved?
Do I need to set up my system so either I use it for work or I use it
to tinker with the hardware but not both at the same time?

balsa users: balsa vanishes during use?
by Tony Nelson
Do other balsa users find balsa vanishing during use at unpredictable
times? I had to rebuild balsa --without-threads to make it stable in
F12, and (as I just got it working at all again) I've done the same on
F14. If it happens to others, I'll submit a bug.

java and firefox crashes on FC13
by Alex
Hi,
Has anyone else experienced a large number of firefox crashes in the
last few days with FC13? I have all the latest updates for x86_64, and
I believe the recent java updates have caused some instability with
firefox:
java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-46.1.8.3.fc13 Wed 01 Dec 2010 10:02:28 PM EST
java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-46.1.8.3.fc13 Wed 01 Dec 2010 10:02:16 PM EST
The bug reporting tool thing reports SIGSEGV (signal 11), but doesn't
really describe the cause. It seems to happen when visiting a page
that requires java.
Ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex
