Fedora 11 installation on Thinkpad X31- Unstable tsc
by Nguyen Duy Phuong
Hi, I am a newbie to Linux. Have tried F11 hard disk based installation unsuccessfully on my X31 for the 5th day. After choosing grub at boot (Windows XP is still functional) the insatallation hangs at
firewire_core: created device fw0...
clocksource tsc unstable (delta=-255137765 ns)
Have tried to add to the kernel line in menu.lst either "highres=off ohz=off irqpoll", or "clocksource=hpet", "clocksource=acpi_pm", or "clocksource=jiffies", or "acpi=off", etc. to no avail. vmlinuz0, init.
I wonder if you can please help. Cheers.

Rhythmbox no longer "sees" ipod
by Eric Mesa
Upgraded to F11 yesterday. My iPod appears to be loaded as a removable
drive instead of an ipod based on the icon on the desktop. Rhythmbox
doesn't see it. I am able to transfer podcasts to it using Gtkpod, so
that part of it works. I just think it doesn't work wrt notifying
Rhythmbox that it's an iPod. It may be related to the issue the other
guy was having in here with Amarok. Also, in one of his emails he
mentioned a friend having a problem with Banshee.
Is there a setting that has changed that I need to tweak somewhere?

I don't remember which cd I got. I tried to install logged in as su.
The problem is I can't make a network connection to the internet because it tells me I need to install rp-pppoe. That's what I manually tried to install. I can't reach the repo because I don't have an internet connection.

No, I cannot use yum if I don't have an internet connection.

Problems after a yum upgrade from F10 to F11
by Lars Bjørndal
Hope someone can help me with the following two issues. I've used
yum to upgrade from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11.
The computer is an Lenove X61S laptop. Output from 'uname -rv' is:
'2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE #1 SMP Tue Jul 7 20:59:29 EDT 2009'.
1. Text mode
I prefere to use the console, e.g. text only mode, and so I've set the
system to start up in runlevel 3. Output from 'runlevel' is 'N 3'.
The problem is that I get 48 lines and many more columns than the
usual 80 (don't remember exactly how many).
In /etc/grub.conf, I have added the vga=normal paramtere, as follows:
title Fedora (2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE ro
root=/dev/vg/root0
initrd /initrd-2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE.img vga=normal
In the /var/log/messages, I see a line like this:
Jul 29 12:45:03 lapx kernel: Console: colour VGA+ 80x25
Even thoug, after logging in on the console, I have too many lines and
columns. Also, I can see that the environment variables LINES and
COLUMNS are set to the amount of lines/columns that are displayed.
What has changed from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11, that could cause this
behaviour, and what can I do to fix it?
2. The wireless network will not start at boot time
The wpa_supplicant service is activated, and also the network sercice.
NetworkManager however, is disabled. The
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 looks like this:
# Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network Connection
DEVICE=wlan0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
HWADDR=00:1f:3b:ad:eb:13
PEERDNS=yes
ONBOOT=yes
Anyway, the computer hangs for a long time while looking for IP
information for wlan0, and the process ends with som unsuccess on ping
to the dhcp's IP address. Doing 'ifup wlan0' after logging in, works.
Also this issue occured after upgrading the system. What can I do to
fix this problem?
Regards,
Lars

Trying to install F11 x86_64 on ext3
by Misha Shnurapet
I am trying out the ways to install Fedora 11 on ext3. I know the LiveCD
will not let me do it because it is simply a compressed image of a
pre-installed system and then must be copied upon an ext4 partition.
I ran through the forums and found that installing from a DVD will let
me have the new Fedora on ext3. I downloaded the image, burned it,
double-checked it with
$ sha256sum /dev/dvd
I boot with the DVD and start the installation; at the moment when it
starts detecting the hard drives (I have 2 SATA pcs.), Anaconda shows an
error. I can't save what it reports because I can not switch focus to
the window (does not response being covered by the small one saying
"searching for the hard drives"). :) Tried clicking and Alt+Tabbing,
there is no way. :)
I have searched the project wiki for errata. There doesn't seem anything
similar listed.
I would like to get this working. Please, give me a hint where to look
for further instructions. (Yes, I could try the upgrade feature, but I
would like a fresh install.) :)
Thanks

gnome-volume-control channel levels
by Misha Shnurapet
I have removed all i386 packages from my F10 x86-64 system,
$ rpm -qa | grep i386
and now the gnome-volume-control doesn't remember the channel levels
upon reboot. :-)
Particularly the system boots with the Front channel volume set to zero
each time. I am now trying to figure out why this funny behavior and how
to fix it. Any clue? :-)
Thx.

I'm not sure this is a bug, otherwise there would be a lot of complaining. The docs say that network manager is disabled by default. Mine is enabled. I have eth0 (internet) and eth1 (lan).
Where do I configure eth0?
Is there no way to insure rp-pppoe, bind, dhcp are installed?
I will try another posters suggestion to make a local repo if all else fails.

Package Question
by Ed Warner
I installed F11 as a new install rather than an update. It did not install rp-pppoe nor some other rpm's I needed. Trying to install them from the CD give me an error about not being able to reach the repository.
Did I download the wrong install ISO?
Thanks,
Ed Warner
