Re: ssh tutorial
by gmspro
Many thanks.
This is a great tutorial.
It helps to learn basic uses of ssh.
I was looking for this.
It saved my time from googling and reading long "man ssh" page.
One last thing, reading other mail from fedora-list I knew that I
must be the ssh administrator for log-in using ssh.
How can I be the ssh administrator? Is it possible for me?
Or is there any ssh server(free) where I can log-in using ssh without bothering about being ssh server administration or concerning of having an account in remote computer by the ssh administration.

RPM noob (query, log, build)
by Thufir
So, I went and built my first RPM recently. I had to go back and forth a
bit with the developers, but it's built from the most recent svn update
of curl-java, and, from what I see, is exactly what I wanted to install
is installed the way I want it installed. However, I don't understand
why the rpm query isn't returning the expected result.
Oddly, I recall running the query option to figure out where the JAR was
installed to. Also, there's more than a JAR involved, there are some .so
files. Is there a different query to run?
Did I make the RPM incorrectly? Here I am going around in circles a bit
(after doing the hard part, building the RPM):

ati driver problem on fc 8 with mplayer
by George R Goffe
Howdy,
I had no problems with this system until I decided to update the Mobility FireGL V5250 driver on my FC 8 system. Don't ask why FC 8 still unless you really want to know.
After making an unwise decision to delete the pkg that provided the functional driver, I updated with the latest ATI-AMD driver. The install process complains thusly "gcc: modules.c: No such file or directory". I assumed (there's that word) that I wouldn't need the old pkg and that there would be no problems. What a misteak.
I don't know enough about the interaction of the various components to be able to isolate the cause and repair my system which has been re-installed freshly with FC 8. The X11 components work on this system now but mplayer will not display full screen.
Does anyone in this list know what's going on and what to do to resolve the problem here?
ANY hints/tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
George...

Flood blocking
by Ashley M. Kirchner
I currently have one system I'm testing the following rules on:
iptables -N SSHSCAN
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -m state --state NEW -j SSHSCAN
iptables -A SSHSCAN -m recent --set --name SSH
iptables -A SSHSCAN -m recent --update --seconds 300 --hitcount 2
--name SSH -j DROP
And just by watching it for the past few days, those rules seem to
work pretty well. So, it made me wonder, can I apply the same rules for
FTP and e-mail (with the correct port information of course.)
I get *a lot* of failed FTP attempts. Especially when the sun comes
up in Asia. And then there's the e-mail spam that also doesn't stop.
So, can I take those same set of rules above, replace the port number
and name, and have them work for FTP and e-mail as well?
Am I overlooking something really obvious?

Hello!
I compiled xvidacap 1.1.7 from source and trying to make a screen
cast but it gets stuck frequently when I switch windows back and forth. Is
there any better screen casting solution that don't get stuck while
Switching Windows frequently, showing compiz effects etc.

Fedora linux system -query
by Jyotishmaan Ray
Dear all Linux users,
I am not so old user in Linux os.
I have a query in a given set up.
I have a dns which is a openLDAP server too in a given network ( ip's are in 192.168.8.x series ).
I have a mail server and a webserver too.
I have two proxy servers connected in the same network (vlan).(Ip is 192.168.8.y). The proxies are having two network cards- one for internal link and another for the external link (ip is in the range opf 210.212.z.y series).
There is one external dns server whose ip is 210.212.z.y.
Now the query is :
My LDAP authentication does not happen wehn i try to log into either 192.168.8.5 from 192.168.8.1.
Is it dues to some missing RSA or soemthing else ?
Also let me know if i have to check/ modify the ARP table ? Also please let me know if the internal DNS server's ARP table must have the entry for the external dns server too?
However wehn I tried doing so, it has given me error ?
Please provide me the pointers as to resolve the problems of ssh log in and the link between the internal DNS and external DNS server.
Please note that the resolv.conf files have been updated in all the servers.
Thanks,
Jyotishmaan Ray
