The few lists we're subscribed to, I don't see this happening. Even
with Fedora's list, I don't see a lot of hits in a short amount of
time. I *think* it'll be fine, but then again I won't know till
something get implemented. And even if it's a temporary block, say
lasting 5 minutes, that shouldn't adversely affect mailing lists, I
don't think.

True, however again, keep in mind that these are temporary blocks,
not permanent. 5 minutes at the most. Usually that's enough to cause
the spammer to go look for another target.

Yup, I do. And right now the machines get affected more by the
flood of attacks than the actual iptables blocking. I'd rather remove
all the permanent blocks from iptables, and setup a temporary thing.
Hit me 3 times in 10 seconds, you're blocked for 5 minutes type of thing.

local issues
by Martín Marqués
A few days ago I got F11 up with preupgrade, and now almost everything
is working like a charme.
The only thing I'm not how to fix is that I get these messages at boot time:
/etc/profile.d/lang.sh: line 19: warning: setlocale: LC_CTYPE: cannot
change locale (es_ES.UTF-8): No such file or directory
/etc/profile.d/lang.sh: line 20: warning: setlocale: LC_COLLATE:

/etc/profile.d/lang.sh: line 23: warning: setlocale: LC_MESSAGES:

/etc/profile.d/lang.sh: line 26: warning: setlocale: LC_NUMERIC:
cannot change locale (es_ES.UTF-8): No such file or directory
/etc/profile.d/lang.sh: line 29: warning: setlocale: LC_TIME: cannot

Do I have to from the UTF-8?

Hi Alan et al.
First, thanks for the link - I tend (as a retiree) not to spend a lot of
time following the rants and raves in the Internet about big
software/hardware suppliers..... I'd end up neuroticer than a mad dog! -
but it was very interesting to see how something "useful" like Skype
is/maybe financed. I was surprised to learn from the article that S
belongs to eBay....
Now... if one is to avoid supporting the proprietary market.... does
anyone have a quick guide (!) to the Open Source alternatives? An answer
to the questions like "can I hold an audio meeting with non-Linux
friends"; "does xyz allow video communication"; "can I use the white
board via xyz" & so on????
For once I begin to understand the strong points of Kevin & Co about the
Dark Side of closed systems!
Thanks all
Dave.

do I have to worry about these disk errors?
by Gianluca Cecchi
I got the errors indicated below. Only one time at the moment.
The system is F10 x86_64. I didnt' get any application error from a
user point of view.
Actually in latest times I got some files downloaded from browser
without giving error but indeed not correctly (after md5sum). Donna if
caused by browser bug itself or disk,,,,
And quite often firefox segfaults....
I also got a view at the page
http://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Libata_error_messages
but I'm not sure of the eventual gravity....
any hints?
Thanks
Gianluca

Have you tried the following:
http://nixcraft.com/centos-rhel-fedora/12317-dial-out-demand-using-wvdial...
Don't know if the following still applies, but you can also check:

Similar but related

Hope this helps,

problems with modem (ttyS0 and wvdial)
by François Patte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Bonjour,
I try to configure my laptop modem....
If I use wvdial as root, there is no problem, I can get a ppp connection.
It I use it as John Doe, the answer is:
Cannot open /dev/ttyS0: Device or resource busy
What is missing.
Another question: by default, owner, group and permissions for ttyS0 are:
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 64 juin 6 11:56 /dev/ttyS0
I changed permissions to: crw-rw-rw-
How can I make this change the default permissions
Thanks

Something bollixing packagekit
by Beartooth
When I click the launcher for gpk-update-viewer, it gets an error
popup saying "No network connection available," even though one is, and
every other app is using it. The "Details" in the popup say merely
"Cannot refresh cache whilst offline."
If I close the popup, the update viewer will eventually find,
download, and install the updates. But if I launch gpk-application
itself, I am unable to add or remove any software. It hits the same
popup, and unlike the updater, it stops cold when I close the popup.
How do I tell it to wake up and smell the coffee??

Kernel update broke my system.
by Wendell Nichols
While I was conducting a web meeting with a number of people yesterday
my keyboard stopped working. Thats the second time its happened and I
was forced to reboot! Imagine my acute frustration that because of a
kernel update the boot loader failed and I was left with a blinking
cursor! While 10 people patiently waited on the phone I had to boot the
installer and go through the "change boot loader" part of an os
upgrade. Luckly that worked and I was back in business in about 15 minutes.
I suspect that all my raving about the stability of linux over windows
is now the source of some humor in my company and the 3 other companies
represented on the call....
The kernel update that "got me" was: kernel-2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64
ackkptewee :-)
