kernel update on live CD ??
by Fred Smith
When booted up from a live CD (most recent F11 pre-release), I'm thinking
it's impossible to install something that requires a reboot, such as a
kernel update.
Unless,... one can figure out how to enable persistence. Which I don't
know how to do...
Clues appreciated.

snd-hda-intel options in modprobe

Hi all,
I'm working on my laptop to better use mic, headphone and speaker
(internal and external).
The laptop is a Vaio VGN-FW11E and the sound card is

With a standard Fedora 9 installation (updated) I can use the speaker
and an external mic.
I can use also the camera but not the internal mic (that I think is
present near the camera).
Alsamixer and kmix do not show options for mic other that "Front mic".
When I insert headphone, the speaker continue to sound (and also the
headphone).
I tried to use other models for hda-intel driver using the options files
in /etc/modprobe.d
whith
options snd-hda-intel model=hippo
headphone inserting mute the speaker, but mic do not work
kmix shows
mic - front mic - line - CD as input source but noone works without an
external mic
with
options snd-hda-intel model=sony-assamd
is the same but with less options as input and output.
Someone can help my to found the right model?
Alsa modules installed are
alsa-lib-1.0.17-2.fc9.i386.rpm
alsa-utils-1.0.17-2.fc9.i386.rpm
tnx to all

Thanks Anne, permissions, ownership & password were all OK.......But
/tmp was full! Cleared out the .trash & I'm back in business again.
I'll be trying the varioous scripts I've seen on other forums for
clearing /tmp automatically!
Need to try the Live CD again now & see whether that runs!
Thanks again for your help

Webserver(?) performance issues when accessed through non-server system
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone
For an issue that is probably pretty simple to fix, it was really hard
to come up with a subject that had any relation to the problem...
Anyway, here goes.
I have a Fedora 8 and a Fedora 10 system hooked up to a cable (Comcast)
internet connection through a Linksys router. The Fedora 8 system is
relatively old(?): 1.8 GHZ AMD 32bit processor with 1 gig of RAM. The
Fedora 8 system also runs a webserver and a mail server. The Fedora 10
system has an Intel Xeon 2Ghz Quad Core Processor with 8 Gigs of RAM.
The issue is that when I attempt to access either of the two following
locations (both served on on Fedora 8 system I referred to earlier)
the pages never stop loading:
http://www.afolkey2.net/squirrelmail
http://www.afolkey2.net/gallery2/main.php
For example, after a few minutes of loading, this is what my Gallery2
installation looks like when viewed in Firefox 3.0.10:
http://www.afolkey2.net/~steve/Fedora10-Gallery2atAfolkey2Net.jpg
The next screenshot was taken after I ssh'd into my Fedora 8 box and
ran Firefox from that box. Here is the result after just a few moments
of loading:
http://www.afolkey2.net/~steve/Fedora8-Gallery2atAfolkey2Net.jpg
My Gallery2 installation also works perfectly at every other computer
that I've tried it on. In fact, just this morning I ran some
administrative tasks from a Windows 2003 thin client at the place
that I work at. I was very pleased with the very zippy performance of
my Gallery2 install.
So, my humble opinion is that the issue is a network configuration
issue on my system, since the two radically different performance
scenarios described above are occuring on two systems that are hooked
up the the same router.
I have a feeling that this is a relatively simple fix, but it is beyond
my current skills...
So, thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Steven P. Ulrick
P.S.: I just remembered that this issue is not confined to Firefox. I
have tried all of this with Opera, Konqueror and Dillo, with the same
results. (In the case of Dillo, understanding that of course it
appears to have no CSS support, so even if the page ever finished
loading, it would look markedly different than it is supposed to.

Xorg monitor

I tried to craft together some command,
"strace -o /dev/null -p `pgrep Xorg`". But this could be done better.
Here it will write to /dev/null, but it will also write a message on your
screen when it does so. It is actually this message I found
interesting to use.
What I believe it may tell me is:
a) when Xorg die
b) when a thead die
c) - some indication of the reason
--------------------
What I have found is that memory structures get trashed. Xorg seem to write
to parts it should leave alone, etc. ( some memory management is missing )
I am running 64bit AMD with ati-radeon.
So far, I have seen how this little command seem to report when/why some of
the problems occur.
Would like some improvement:
Pseudo code:
loop
if not "monitor" attached,
write output to file,
increment error-counter,
attach monitor,
endif
always
( "monitor" being: strace -o /dev/null -p `pgrep Xorg` )
-------------------------
Some may have some clever idea as how to accomplish this.
The *important* point would be if it could be of use for more then
myself, and perhaps uncover some of the obstacles we struggle with.
