F12 Lost Gnome Panels
by Beartooth
I don't know what I did that made my panels go away -- but I need
them back.
All I see is the bare desktop, with launchers for Computer, my
user's home, and the trash.
I need my left (originally top) and bottom panels. How do I get
them back??

two questions about ssh tunneling
by Tudod Ki
if I:
ssh -fND localhost:6000 somebody(a)192.168.56.5 -p PORTNUMBER
from computer "A" to computer "B" [B = 192.168.56.5] then I can set the
SOCKS proxy for e.g.: Firefox to use "localhost:6000" on computer "A".
Ok. I can surf the web through "B".
But:
- Can anyone sniff the traffic of "A"? [e.g.: computers on same subnet
as "A"] Like DNS requests? - I think no, but I'm not sure :O
- Can anyone sniff the traffic of computer "B"? e.g.: B computer is at
a server farm [others in the farm can see the traffic?] - I think yes,
but I'm not sure :O

interface ethernet monitor ether1
status: link-ok
auto-negotiation: done
rate: 100Mbps
full-duplex: yes
default-cable-setting: standard
how could I check that is there a link under "Linux"? [to get info about the cable - is it plugged in or not?]

internet (without LAN) monthly traffic statistics
by Dj YB
hello,
does anyone know of a good (working) program for monthly internet usage stats
I need this info to stay under my monthly traffic cap.
I am using a single ethernet connection for LAN and internet.
iptraf is really complicated and require too many changes,
vnstat doesn't support the separation using single interface...
any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
using Fedora 11 KDE 4.3.2
I won't be able to read emails in the next two weeks so no rush :-)
thanks,
YB.

How to define command for entry in Gnome menu?
by Hiisi
Dear List!
On my system I have to start Blender using 'LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
blender'. Otherwise it's impossible to work in it. I set up an alias
in .bashrc and it works well from command line. However if I start
Blender from Application->Graphic->Blender the alias doesn't work. I
thought menu entries in Gnome are using the same commands as if I've
typed them manually in terminal. Am I wrong here?

Re: Reorganising F11 partitions - how to? --follow-on
by DB
Hi all,
After following the various advice you gave me, I was able to a) move my
/usr partition contacts to / & modify fstab. Trying to get rid of the
/tmp partition put me into the "login-black screen" cycle, so had to
leave that alone. Did the 11-12 preupgrade with the only problem of not
having enoough space for the upgrade image in /boot; that got dealt with
by the download alternative.
So... everything "sort of" works. Biggest annoyance (machine is a
Toshiba Equium A160 loptop) is when the machine goes into powersave or I
close the lid, the restart produces a screen that looks like a
psychedelic nightmare. By knowing where things are, I can start some of
the apps, but the text is not 100% readable.
2nd biggest pain is to persuade the graphics that I only want one screen
image (maybe in 2 sizes for the Toshiba screen & my external screen),
rather than an image somehow split over the 2 screens. -I'll be trying
the script Marko offered during the week.
Then.... it appears that if I plugin a USB device, it gets recognised,
but if I startup with the device already plugged in, it isn't seen.
(Similar happened in F11 with my PCMCIA WLAN card, it was only
recognised when plugged into a running system.
And of course, Skype still kills itself when I try to test the webcam.
OK, following on from the preupgrade idea... If I want to do a clean
install, I have the choice of Live-cd, DVD-iso od CD-isos. I had some
problems last year trying to burn a DVD-iso, so I'm wondering:- can I
burn all the CD images one-by-one to a DVD & then boot from it & have
the installer find the disc images as they are required? Or is it a
must to have them each on a separate CD? Or.... as the Toshi refuses to
boot from a USB device, can I do a someone was suggesting during the
week, burn the initial disc to CD & then access the other disc images
from a USB external drive?
As ever, many thanks for all your suggestions,

Dialup PPPD with Network Manager in F12
by David
I'm seeking advice on the use of "plain old dialup" pppd and Network Manager.
My internet access is provided by 56kbit/s dialup modem on /dev/ttyS0
on a desktop pc which also has an ethernet NIC that gives CUPS,
backup, NFS, internet services to another notebook pc. DSL is not
available here due to poor line quality.
I currently have dialup pppd working in Fedora 9. Back then I was not
able to find a comprehensive or current Howto but I did get it working
by reading widely and manually editing these files
/etc/hosts
/etc/sysconfig/network
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/host.conf
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets
/etc/ppp/peers/my_isp (wvdial with --remotename --chat options)
/etc/ppp/options
/etc/ppp/my_chat_script
/etc/wvdial.conf
Back then I uninstalled F9 Network Manager because it seemed that it
and/or system-config-network was interfering with some of the above
files.
I now want to progress to Fedora 12. I will do a clean installation.
So I'm just asking here first to see if there is a better way than my
previous approach above.
I noticed that NetworkManager in F12 included Wireless Broadband
support, I hoped that it might also be useable for plain old dialup. I
found a reference:
http://www.linux.co.uk/docs/center/how-to/how-to-get-online-with-3g-broad...
that it looks possible to specify the modem device port somewhere in
NetworkManager. However I am unable to find anywhere to do this in F12
Network Manager Applet 0.7.996. Maybe the manual configuration option
was dropped in favour of the wizard approach.
My questions are:
I need to use pppd via /dev/ttyS0 dialup modem in Fedora 12.
1) Should I disable Network Manager ?
2) Or is there a way to have Network Manager cooperate with serial
device modem connections ?
3) Is Network Manager likely to have this capability in future ? Or is
it considered obsolete ?
4) Have I overlooked any Howto that assists with use of pppd with
serial device modems on F12 ?
Thanks

[Off Topic] Announcing the Release of the World's First 64-bit Build of Google's Chromium OS with Xen Virtualization Support
by Mr. Teo En Ming (Zhang Enming)
I have integrated the open source Xen hypervisor 3.4.3 RC1-pre and
Jeremy Fitzhardinge's pv-ops dom0-patched kernel 2.6.31.6 into my
64-bit build of ChromiumOS. With the integrated Xen virtualization
support, you can now create and run virtual machines or guest
operating systems in Google's Chromium OS. If you do not have a need
to create virtual machines, you can simply run ChromiumOS64 as a Xen
domU virtual machine.
To run Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2000, Windows
Server 2003 and/or Windows Server 2008 as a hardware virtual machine
(HVM), you need to have a processor with hardware virtualization
support, e.g. Intel VT-x or AMD Pacifica.
To enable PCI/PCI-e and/or VGA pass-through to HVM virtual machines,
you need to have a motherboard with a supporting chipset capable of
Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed Input/Output (VT-d). VGA
passthrough is more involved and may require you to modify the code to
properly support your specific PCI Express x16 graphics card and
recompile the Xen hypervisor and Xen tools.
Download your copy now! Please note that this is a pre-alpha release.
