CD drive difficulty
by Carroll Grigsby
I'm just finishing installing F12 XFCE and encountered a problem
with the CD drive: When I push the eject button, the tray is first
extended fully outward and then is immediately retracted. I'm
reasonably certain that this is not a hardware problem, but rather
is some sort of misconfiguration issue.
Some background: The CD/DVD drive was installed a few weeks ago as a
replacement for one that would no longer burn DVDs; it seems to be in
good shape. This is a multiboot installation, and the drive performs
properly on the other partitions, including one running F12 KDE and
another with F11 XFCE.
Any help that you can offer will be appreciated.

Microphone/Line In not working in F12-x86_64
by Philip Rhoades
People,
I have been looking at this for a couple of days with no success - I
have a new install from LiveCD of F12-x86_64 on an Intel DG45ID MB.
xine, mplayer and vlc have installed OK and play audio/video no problems
but I need to get Skype and other microphone apps going and I am not
getting any life out of the input at all.
I have followed suggestions for sound preferences (right clicking on
speaker icon) and pavucontrol with no luck . .
I also tried using a dedicated AV OS Omega (based on Fedora 11) but that
had the same problem recording.
Is there a low-level test I can do on the Mic port?
alsa-info.txt attached in case it helps.
Ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Phil.

Board appointment
by Paul W. Frields
I am pleased to announce that Christopher Aillon will continue in his
appointed seat on the Fedora Project Board for this cycle. His term
will last until the selection process following the release of Fedora
14, in accordance with the Board's established succession planning.
Christopher's presence on the Board has helped our discussions on a
number of subjects over the past year, and I look forward to having
him continue that relationship.
Apologies for making this announcement slightly after the beginning of
elections, due to the schedule change of elections and the intervening
FUDCon activity. The remaining Board appointment will be made after
the close of the Board elections.

Can't browse file shares on other computers with F11 using Samba
by KC8LDO
I have a problem with F11 not browsing file shares on other machines. I can
browse file shares on the F11 box from other computers however just fine.
When I try to browse file shares, using Nautilus, on the LAN I can see
several machines out there and a folder for the local workgroup. Clicking on
one of the computers listed I get a message about not being able to mount
the location. I have F3, F5, F8 and a F12 box that all seem to work OK, just
the F11 box is not working. I set them all up the same.
After doing some research using Google I found this isn't exactly an
uncommon problem. Samba was removed and then reinstall using yum-extender,
no luck. I'm not using DHCP, all machines have a fixed IP, the firewall is
disabled, network manager is disabled, IPv4 is the only protocol running
(IPv6 is disabled) and SELinux is disabled. Some info I found tends to
suggest it's a Nautilus screw up, maybe.
Any ideas?

Difficulty setting up Fedora 12 screen
by Dick Roark
After installing Fedora 12 I am having problems setting up 1280x1024
screen resolution. Only 640x480 and 800x600 are available. I was
using F11 at 1280x1024 on this hardware before upgrading to F12.
After that, so far no joy. I would appreciate any helpful info. I
have also tried using various configurations of the xorg.conf and
xrandr without success. Obviously, I'm missing something. I feel
certain that the fix is right under my nose but so far, nothing works.

I just installed [yum] system-config-display and get the following

All I want to do is determine what display parameters I am using?
What's wrong here?

Screen brightness controls missing in Fedora 12
by Robert Nichols
In a Fedora 12 Gnome desktop, where has the control for screen
brightness gone? It used to be controlled in Power Management,
but those settings have disappeared and I can't find them
anywhere else.

I had this same problem with YouTube and even though had javascript enabled
as well as correct flash installed it didn't seem enough to make YouTube
content work. I then did , "yum -y install GStreamer and after I completed
this installation all worked well.
Some parts of gstreamer were already installed but some were not, this made
sure I had everything.
Paul.

locale setup, LANG variable - strange
by Michal
Hallo Fedora Users!
Assume that I want to set up my fedora to polish locale.
Then in contol panel->Regional & language I set polish in:
1) in country & region language
2) keyboard languae
after relogging in this is enough but only for KDE applications.
non-kde applications still use sestem wide language (the one that is set
by applications->administration->language).
How to set them also to use polish.
I do not consider changing system wide language to polish.
I also noticed, that changing language only in "contol panel->Regional &
language" does not change LANG shell variable to polish. Maybe this will
lead to an answer?
Problem of course is related to any non-kde application, not only firefox.
have You got any ideas?
best regards,
Michal
