Restoring Windows MBR over GRUB stage 1
by Andrew Hall
I have a two disk setup with Windows on /dev/sda and Linux on /dev/sdb
GRUB stage 1 is in the MBR of /dev/sda and boots each OS by directing
to stage 2 on /dev/sdb
I now wish to entirely remove /dev/sdb but continue to boot Windows
from /dev/sda
I guess I need to do one of two things. Either...
1. Get GRUB stage 1 to boot Windows
...or...
2. Restore the native Windows bootloader to the MBR on /dev/sda
The problem is that I have no idea how to do either.
Can anyone help ?
Thanks very much.

F11 -> F12 from DVD: error; unable to read package metadata
by Colin Brace
Hi all,
I would like to upgrade an existing F11 system to F12. However, the
installer throws up an error message:
----
Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata
directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been properly generated.
Cannot retrieve repository data (respond.xml) for respository
anaconda-InstallationRepo-200911081904-x86_64. Please verify its path and
try again.
----
I've seen this the last few Fedora upgrades. As a result, I usually end up
doing the upgrade with yum. However this time I am changing architecture
(686->86_64) and would prefer to do it from the DVD, as I don't believe that
using yum to do this is supported.
Thanks.

Difference between screen saving in F11 and F12
by Brian Wood
With F11 the screen saver would gradually (fade in), but with F12 it
happens suddenly. I would like to have it fade in gradually again
on F12. I've looked at the screen saver preferences but didn't
see a way to control that. How can I make it behave the way I
want? TIA

Anaconda loses ~100 GByte of disk when installing Fedora 12, was "Part of hard disk disappeared..."
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
I have looked a little more into the system I just installed, so now I am
posting the same issue I mentioned in that other thread, but hopefully in
a clearer form.
I had this 350 GByte SATA disk which had Fedora 9 on it, on several
separate partitions filling the whole disk, called /dev/sdaN and mounted
on:
/
/boot
/home
/mydata
swap
Monday I installed Fedora 12 x86_64 on that disk, accepting all the
defaults. Installation went OK, but I ended up with a disk that (see
command outputs below) has logical volumes containing swap, /boot on
/dev/sda1, / on /dev/sda2, for a total space, if I understand correctly,
of only 250 GB.
What happened and why? Where are those missing ~100 GBytes, and how do I
recover them without reinstalling from scratch?
TIA,
Marco

How to import a Fedora Core 7 era KVM Image to Fedora 12?
by Michael N. Moran
I recently installed Fedora 12 after using Fedora Core 7
for last couple of years. I have a Windoze KVM/Qemu image
that I would like to import to run on my shiny new Fedora
12.
I've launched Virtual Machine Manager, but it doesn't seem
to like my old .raw image file.
Any pointers?

reinstalling grub MBR on first drive
by Colin Brace
Hi all,
Several weeks ago, I installed a new motherboard in my Fedora system. During
the switchover, the SATA drives (I have five) were reconnected in a slightly
different order. As a result, the grub menu wasn't displayed; rather I was
dumped into the grub prompt and had to boot manually (root..., kernel...
initrd... boot).
Just now, I tried to fix it by reconnecting the SATA drives in the order I
think they should, but I have succeeded only in making things worse. Now I
don't even get a the grub prompt; just an empty screen.
Yes, I've googled this, yes, there lots of hits, but I can't seem to figure
out what I need to do. From what I understand, the MBR of the first drive
needs to point to the drive with the OS. In my case, the OS is on /dev/sdb.
So, there needs to be something in the MBR on /dev/sda pointing to
/dev/sdb1, which is /boot, no? Still, I seem to be missing part of the
picture. Simply put, what do I need to do to be able to boot my system
again?
Thanks.

embedded You Tube not working in FF with F12
by SternData
Embedded YouTube videos are no longer working for me in Firefox. If I
right click and select "view on You Tube", they're fine. I have removed
the FlashBlock addon without helping the situation.
Embedded videos work in Chrome.
Ideas?

copy xfce configuration?
by Bob Goodwin
I have a Fedora 12 computer on which I have set the screen
configuration to satisfy me. That includes launchers with icons and
panels 1, 2, and 3. Can I transfer my configuration to another user
by copying a file/s? Or do I have to recreate it for each user? If
so can I copy it to another F12 computer?
