Strange MTU-ish problem
by Timothy Murphy
I'm presently away from home, in Italy,
using an alice.it (Telecom Italia's broadband service) ADSL modem.
This works fine, except when googling, or using wget.
When I start a search, I only get half a page of links,
even though I am told there are several million hits.
Again, I just tried downloading a 750k PDF file;
it downloaded 6%, and then hung.
The behaviour is the same using WiFi or ethernet.
What is galling is that there is no such problem with Windows XP,
while the Linux problem occurs both on my Thinkpad T43
and on my grand-daughter's EeePC (running Xandros).
I tried changing the MTU with "ifconfig eth1 mtu 1492"
but this did not seem to improve matters.
(I tried various bigger and smaller mtu's.)
I found with ipconfig under windows
that fragmentation occurred with packet length > 1464
(I didn't find an equivalent Fedora application),
so on adding 28 for the header as advised,
I got the figure of 1492.
It's a slightly theoretical problem,
as I am going home soon,
and anyway can always google under Windows if necessary.
But I would be interested to know the cause,
and if possible a cure.
Incidentally, as far as I could see from the 192.168.1.1 web-page,
it is not possible to change the MTU of the modem.

liveusb fedora 10 kernel update?
by Phill
I've created a liveusb disk with Fedora 10 with persistent overlay. I love having the live functionality with the ability to save. However after yum updating, I realized that the new kernel didn't get loaded. Anyone out there know how to reconfigure a liveusb syslinux to boot this new kernel?

Setting SELinux for vsftpd
by Mark Haney
I've got a server that we use to do speed testing of our upstreams (and
customers links) using FTP. This is a fresh F10 install and I'm getting
what seems to be a very common selinux ftp error (226 Failed to open
directory). I've googled up a couple of forum posts on how to fix it,
but most say just to disable selinux. That I'd not like to do.
However, one of the options says to do this:
setsebool -P ftpd_disable_trans 1
But I get an error:
[root@noc5 speedtest]# setsebool -P ftpd_disable_trans 1
libsemanage.dbase_llist_set: record not found in the database
libsemanage.dbase_llist_set: could not set record value
Could not change boolean ftpd_disable_trans
Could not change policy booleans
I have seen the GUI method of doing this, but since I don't run X on
this server that's not much help. What's the correct method of setting
selinux up for this?

F9->F10 No GDM
by Eric Mesa
Yum upgraded from F9 to F10 last night. Everything went more smoothly than
it's ever gone for me and I've been doing this for the past 3-4 releases.
When I rebooted, I got a blue bar being chased by a light-blue bar being
chased by a white bar. I don't have ATI, so I figured that was normal. Then
when GDM was supposed to start....nothing happened. It just sat there with a
blinking cursor. If I ctl-alt-F# I can log in and everything seems fine.
I did another boot but this time I hit Esc and watched the boot. After
starting Smart [ok]
the screen flashed a few times and then just sat there.
I tried erasing Xorg and rebooting. Same problem. I checked my /etc/X11 and
there was a new xorg.conf in there. Created by the livna program.
Any help in getting GUI Fedora back would be great.

Fingerprint authentication when desktop locked
by Nicolae Ghimbovschi
Hello,
Last week I successfully configured PAM (in Fedora 10) to provide
fingerprint authentication
(http://www.reactivated.net/fprint/wiki/Pam_fprint).
Everything works great.
Except when my desktop is locked, to unlock it I'm asked only for my password.
Why it does not use the pam_fprint module for authentication ?
Below is the listing of my system-auth
$ cat /etc/pam.d/system-auth

# User changes will be destroyed the next time authconfig is run.

ssh clarification needed
by Anne Wilson
I frequently use ssh+keys to do yum updates on my server, but I've not used it
on other parts of the LAN. Now I want to, and I realise that I'm not clear on
one very important point.
Is a ssh key specific to a computer, or to a user? That is, does my key
pertain to any box on the lan, as long as I'm the user? Or is it machine
specific - in which case I would think that every user would have the same
key, which seems unlikely. Then again, is it a combination of user and
computer, in which case every user needs a specific key on every box he uses
(assuming that he may want to ssh to other boxes).
I suspect that the last case is the correct one, but I want to be sure.
Thanks

Multiple windows on a window with KDE 4.x ? (1x24" display or 2x20" displays... )
by linux guy
Kind of off topic, but I'd love to know what people think of running a
single high quality 24 inch LCD display at 1920x1200 versus running 2 20
inch displays at 1680x1050.
I have the later setup (2 x 20"@ 1680x1050) and it works, no doubt about
it. But its not like having a single display because the space isn't
contiguous. I tend to use one display as my main work area and the
other for the off the side stuff. It would be nicer if it was all one
area.
However, one thing I do really like about the dual monitor setup is that
one gets two windows,ie if one maximizes an application on one of the
screens, it expands to fill that screen and only that screen.
I'm wondering if its possible to have 2 windows in a single display
under KDE4.x Is there a way to set half the display up to be one window
and half to be another window ? With a 1920x1200 display, each window
could be 960x1200.
I'd love to hear what other neat window/display things can be done in
KDE4.x that I don't know about.
I think one can run each display as a separate Linux session. I've
never done that. If one does this, can one copy and paste data between
the two ?
Thanks

Virtualizing XP with dual boot FC10/XP
by Hal Meyer
I have FC10 and Windows dual booted on my PC and would like to
virtualize XP with KVM.
I want to be able to both boot to XP and also virtualize it in FC10
(obviously not at the same time).
When I try to install a new virtual machine the process wants to install
XP from the CD. Is there a way to just point to the XP partition on the
disk?
Vmware workstation claims to be able to do this but there seem to be
other issues with vmware and FC10.
Thanks,
Hal
