with new installation of f10 and get an auto notice that updates are available.
when i select 'update', 'kpackagekit' pops up showing selection for updates.
when i select 'update' again, i get a notice of 'authentication failed'.
so just what authentication is failing and how do i authenticate?
also, i would use 'yum update', but there are too many for limited disk space.
or would i be better off updating in an alphabetical order?
searching last 2 months of emails show no similar error.
suggestions? pointers? links?
tia.
peace out.

Is this problem solvable?
by Timothy Murphy
Before leaving home on a visit to Italy (where I am now)
I re-booted my server.
I noticed that shorewall did not print out its usual messages,
but foolishly did not check what caused this.
Now I can ping the machine,
but cannot ssh into it (I chose a strange port)
or access its web-server.
My question is: given that I can ping the machine,
is there any way I can re-boot it remotely,
or even just re-start shorewall?

Auditing subdirectories recursively using auditd
by Giuseppe Fuggiano
Hi list.
I found that auditd daemon is very useful to audit my linux
installation. But, given a directory, I'd like to audit also its
subdirectories and files, recursively. Also, if a user create or
modify something there, the audit watches should change properly.
Is it possible? I cannot figure out the rules to add in
/etc/audit.rules to do that. I hope in someone who experienced this
issue.
Thanks a lot,

VPN performance
by Luc MAIGNAN
Hi,
I've setup an access to a samba share from outside using a VPN connexion
(OpenVPN architecture Linux on Server - Windows on Client). The clients
use a 3G internet connexion and assume the architecture is too slow to
be usable.
Is there another architecture to share samba over internet with security
and a fastest access ?

Possibly, although I doubt it - I've never seen a flash plugin that
attempted this but I have seen a number of JVMs do it (I assume it's
something to do with jit), mostly older ones iirc, so it's probably
worth checking for updates if you have a JRE installed that's not part
of the distribution.

vim is adequate, though I am personally in the emacs camp despite my
loathing of LISP (other people write nice LISP routines, fortunately, so I
don't have to).

Help -- can't SSH into my box
by John Aldrich
Well, for some strange reason, since installing Fedora 10, I can no longer
SSH into my box. I've got SSHD running, both on the standard port and on a
non-standard port. I don't even get a username/password prompt. Just a
timeout error. Funny thing is I can SCP into the box all day long, I just
can't SSH into it.
Some things I've tried (in this order):
0) Put an exception for SSH and non-standard port in the firewall rules.
1) Disabled firewall entirely.
2) rebooted my router
3) Disabled Fail2Ban
4) Restarted networking
Any ideas? I'd really like to be able to connect to my box.
