Re: grub not working after kernel update
by Emil Volcheck
I'd like to follow up on Lee's issue with GRUB not working
following a kernel update.
This same problem happened to me when I did the automatic
update this past weekend. It was very disconcerting!
I think this qualifies to be listed in the Common Fedora Bugs
documentation. Or, there needs to be a warning when
the auto updater attempts to upgrade the kernel.
Unfortunately, the rescue disk did not work for me(*), so instead
I grabbed the latest respin (7/18) from FedoraUnity.org, upgraded,
and selected the option to write the boot loader. Merely
updating the boot loader did not suffice. I had to actually
specify it be installed again. That worked just fine and got
me back up and running.
Thanks,
Emil Volcheck

print request completed but no printer output
by Francisco Corella
Hello,
I'm trying to use a USB printer with Fedora 8. When I
plugged in the printer to the computer, Gnome
correctly identified the printer as a Brother
MFC-665CW and found a driver for it. I sent several
print requests using Firefox, and also using the
commands lp and lpr. All print jobs were successfully
completed according to lpstat, and according to
/var/log/cups/error_log. But there was no printer
output. The printer is working fine when plugged in
to a Mac. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Francisco

pulseaudio does not start after kernel update
by Marcelo Garcia
Hi.
I'm suspicious that PulseAudio is not starting properly after kernel
updates. For example, if I start Skype, I got the message: "problem with
audio playback". Or if I try "Applications->Sound & Video->PulseAudio
Volume Control", I got the message "connection refused". And finally:
[root@d510 ~]# aplay
*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused
*** Is your sound server running?
*** See: http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/Troubleshooting
aplay: main:564: audio open error: Connection refused
I'm running Fedora 9 in a Dell Latitude D510 (old low spec machine).
Does anyone else having similar problem?
Thanks

unable to enumerate USB device
by Mikkel
I am getting strange messages in the logs:
hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5
hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 6
hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 4
Everything works fine, but I would like to know what causes them.
According to what I found on Google, I can safely ignore them.

Wireless no longer working
by Paolo Galtieri
Since the latest updates to F9 my wireless no longer works. This seems to
be a common theme. Anyway the following messages appear in
/var/log/messages and I'm curious as to what they mean
Jul 29 18:07:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: No space for Tx
Jul 29 18:07:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: Error sending REPLY_LEDS_CMD:
iwl3945_enqueue_hcmd failed: -28
Jul 29 18:07:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: No space for Tx
Jul 29 18:07:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: Error sending REPLY_LEDS_CMD:
iwl3945_enqueue_hcmd failed: -28
Jul 29 18:07:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: No space for Tx
Jul 29 18:07:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: Error sending REPLY_LEDS_CMD:
iwl3945_enqueue_hcmd failed: -28
Jul 29 18:08:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: No space for Tx
Jul 29 18:08:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: Error sending REPLY_LEDS_CMD:
iwl3945_enqueue_hcmd failed: -28
Jul 29 18:08:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: No space for Tx
Jul 29 18:08:42 localhost kernel: iwl3945: Error sending REPLY_LEDS_CMD:
iwl3945_enqueue_hcmd failed: -28
They occur regularly, probable due to NM managing the device. When I try to
start it via ifup wlan0 it fails.
My wireless dhcp server showst the following messages:
WLAN client: 00:1B:77:17:F4:7C, associated to wlan network
WLAN client: 00:1b:77:17:f4:7C, disconnected from wlan network. Initiator:
client. Reason: Leaving the ESS
The client side shows
Jul 29 18:25:45 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to
255.255.255.255port 67 interval 15
Jul 29 18:26:00 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to
255.255.255.255port 67 interval 10
Jul 29 18:26:10 localhost dhclient: No DHCPOFFERS received.
I also have several related questions:
1) Why does NM even try to do something with the wireless device when it is
not marked to be activated on boot? I don't need to be active on both the
wired and wireless interfaces at the same time :)
2) Why are the activate and deactivate buttons greyed out when I start
system-config-network? This the case for both the wired and wireless
interfaces.
The only way to start the wireless (and have it fail) is to do ifup wlan0.
3) I have both wired and wireless interfaces. The system is normally
connected via the wired and gets its address via dhcp from my server. One
of the pieces of information provided by my dhcp server and received by NM
is the host name
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 10.0.0.70 port 67
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost dhclient: DHCPACK from 10.0.0.70
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost dhclient: bound to 10.0.0.4 -- renewal in 2975
seconds.
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost NetworkManager: <info> DHCP: device eth0 state
changed bound -> renew
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost NetworkManager: <info> address 10.0.0.4
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost NetworkManager: <info> netmask 255.255.255.0
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost NetworkManager: <info> gateway 10.0.0.100
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost NetworkManager: <info> hostname 'peglaptop10'
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost NetworkManager: <info> nameserver '68.2.16.25'
Jul 27 12:10:44 localhost NetworkManager: <info> domain name 'homenet10'
Jul 27 12:10:45 localhost NetworkManager: <info> Policy set (eth0) as
default device for routing and DNS.
Yet when I login after booting the system the host name is set to
localhost. Even if I set the hostname to peglaptop10 using
hostname peglaptop10
the next time I reboot the host name is back to localhost.
4) How do I fix the following selinux problem which occurs when I do
ifdown eth0
rm: cannot remove `/etc/resolv.conf.predhclient.eth0': Permission denied
I get an alert from selinux which I have attached. Also when I restart the
interface
ifup eth0
I get the following even though the interface comes up.
[root@localhost opt]# ifup eth0
Determining IP information for eth0...dhclient(21974) is already running -
exiting.
This version of ISC DHCP is based on the release available
on ftp.isc.org. Features have been added and other changes
have been made to the base software release in order to make
it work better with this distribution.
Please report for this software via the Red Hat Bugzilla site:
http://bugzilla.redhat.com
exiting.
failed.
And BTW dhclient is not running after I do the ifdown. I assume this is
related to NM managing the interface.
Any thoughts and assistance are appreciated.
Thanks.

Max:
Thanks for the update. It looks really clean and has great information.
One minor typo that I spotted on Q. 7's answer:
"Modern version of Linux use a cool new type"
should be
"Modern versions"

Can I get a word in edgewise here, puhlease?
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
2nd send, no echo came back in about 12 hours now.
With the conversion to HDTV in our local market now underway, I need to be
able to tell xine what channels there are. Unforch, the
dvbscan -fx -o .xine/channels.conf
doesn't regenerate the file with the new 8VSB signals that have come online in
the last week.
Does anyone know how to make that work, or, how to change channels in the xine
front end? I can't find a channel up/down function in its gui.

using mock like debootstrap
by Christoph Höger
Hi,
for a deployment of virtual machines I need a complete root tree.
To get it I use mock --init --root=fedora-9-i386 (or any other release)
That works a little like debootstrap.
But what do I need to get my machine _really_ working (I already
installed yum, sshd and some tools)?
For example I am missing /etc/shadow and cannot use passwd to set up a
root password.
So is there some kind of base packages list?
regards
Christoph
