F10 question: using vpnc ???
by Fred Smith
Hi!
F10 is looking good on my eeepc 901! I installed from the DVD (trimmed out
a lot of stuff). Been working on configuration and making good progress.
But there are two things I haven't figured out yet:
1) I've been through the network configuration screens. I've set up wired
(eth0) and wireless (ra0) using the rt2680 packages from RPMFusion.
I also set up a cisco vpn (vpnc) and can't figure out how the heck to
make it start up. I don't find any tools ANYWHERE for starting it.
It won't start from the commandline because the configuration I entered
for it was not saved in /etc/vpnc. where does the netw ork config tool
save them? What tool does one use to control it?
i've got knetworkmanager installed, but it doesn't DO anything when I
run it. I see it in the output of "ps ax | grep knet" but there's no UI.
Should there be?
2) I've got a strange device showing in the output of /sbin/ifconfig.
in addition to eth0 (wired), lo (loopback), and ra0 (wireless) there's
a device named "virbr0". No clue where that came from. it has both an
IPv4 and IPv6 address, though my network is 192.168.2.x, and this device
is 192.168.122.x which isn't even an address I'd assign manually, nor one
that my dhcp server would have assigned. I can ssh to it and log in on
it just fine. but I don't see why it exists, or how it got there. Clues
anyone?
Thanks a bunch!
And thanks to the whole Fedora team! :)

F10 Kaffeine can't display DVB
by Bernd Bartmann
Hi,
In F10 I started Kaffeine. It detected my two DVB cards fine and I can
see the channel list, but when trying to select a channel I get these
error messages:
Kein Modul gefunden um diese Quelle zu handhaben (/home/bart/.kaxtv.ts)
xine: Kann keinen Demultiplexer für >/home/bart/.kaxtv.ts< finden
xine: Inputplugin gefunden: Datei Plugin
video_decoder: Kein Plugin gefunden zur Behandlung von 'Image'
xine: Demultiplexer-Plugin gefunden: image demux plugin
xine: Inputplugin gefunden: Datei Plugin
or in English:
No module found to handle this source (/home/bart/.kaxtv.ts)
xine: Could not find a demultiplexer for >/home/bart/.kaxtv.fs<
xine: Inputplugin found: File Plugin
video_decoder: No plugin found to handle 'Image'
xine: Demultiplexer-Plugin found: image demux plugin
xine: Inputplugin found: File Plugin
Could it be that there is some package from rpmfusion needed?
Thanks in advance,
Bernd.

OfficeJet 6200 Series Scanning and Faxing on F10
by Christopher A Williams
I have F10 running and reasonably well tuned now.
...But I'm having trouble figuring out how to get my HP OfficeJet 6210xi
all-in-one working correctly. This was pretty straight forward in F9,
but has me scratching my head with F10. So far, all I can do is print to
it. No scanning, no faxing.
I loaded the xsane libraries for HP OfficeJet printers, but when I
launch XSane (or try to use it via Gimp), it comes back that it can not
find any scanners. Help!!! I need to scan receipts for expense reports,
so this is critical for me.
Next, I'd like to be able to use the fax features. I never tried this in
F9 - I just assumed it would work since it found the fax features via
the printer setup automatically. But in F10 this also seems to be
non-existent.
Can someone point me to the relevant packages or magic incantation to
make this stuff work?
Cheers,
Chris

F10 x86_64 DVD installer kernel panic
by Nandan Bhat
Hi,
I have observed something that I couldn't explain. I have i386 and
x86_64 DVD versions of F10. The mediacheck reports success for both
under a Dell Vostro 1200 laptop. I have installed the i386 version on
the Dell Vostro 1200 laptop without any issues. However, the Optiplex
740 developed a kernel panic.
Background information: Dell Optiplex 740, AMD Athlon X2 5200+, 5 GB (
2GB x 2, 512 MB x 2 ) RAM, 2 x 250 GB Hard disks
I was able to install the i386 version on the Optiplex 740 without
issues. However, since the machine has > 4 GB RAM, I wish to install the
x86_64 version as the primary OS.
There are 6 lines on the screen, that I can see on kernel panic, that
look like error messages.
--- start kernel panic message lines
RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0.
EXT3-fs: unable to read superblock
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=md2, iso_blknum=16, block=32
List of all partitions:
No filesystem could mount root, tried: ext3 iso9660
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(9,2)
--- end kernel panic message lines
Any ideas on overcoming this problem?
Thanks

F10 Gnome session management not working
by Bernd Bartmann
Hi,
one my F10 desktop I usually have 4 gnome-terminals, gkrellm and
Firefox open. So I want all of them to be restored automatically after
loggin out / logging in or after a reboot.
In the menu I selected "System --> Einstellungen --> Persönlich -->
Sitzungen". In English this would probably be "System --> Settings -->
Personal --> Sessions". In the dialog that comes up I went to tab
"Optionen / Options" and activated "Automatisch die laufenden
Programme beim Abmelden merken" or in English "Automaticaly save
running programs during log-off".
But after logging out and logging in again I only get a blank desk
with the top and bottom gnome panels. So, nothing is being saved at
all during logout.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Bernd.

How can I test my private key to see its contents or test the password ?

open nautilus in text mode?
by Dave Stevens
Hi,
I've got a folder with 300K recovered jpegs that vary from teeny to several
megs. I tried to open the folder with Nautilus and got a 10 hour delay and
the whole display is so clumsy (slow) as to be useless.
I'd like to take about 1K of the biggest files and move them to some other
folder but don't see how to do this with the icon view turned on. So.....
Does anyone know how to invoke nautilus with a details view rather than icon
view?
Or, does anyone care to suggest some bash command that would move the largest
1K files to a new (specified) folder. Then I'd hope to be able to use this
command repeatedly to get the files down to a manageable number.
Using F7.
TIA
Dave

locking down/securing Fedora/Redhat/centos servers
by bruce
Hi...
Getting to a situation where a couple of my servers are going to have to be
setup to face the external net.. Need to find a couple of really good
resources, or to identify a couple of good people I can exchange emails with
to set this process up.
Given the nature of the bot apps, and everything else that's happening, this
can't be screwed up...
So, if you're in the security area regarding linux, let's talk!
Thanks
