In F7, Preferences/Font - 'Details', there are options for subpixel and
hinting. Icim - I use gnome.
I used FC5 & 6, which also had this.

reset power saver modes?
by Tom Horsley
I get the impression that sometimes mplayer disables
the power saver mode that would turn off the screen
after 10 minutes (or whatever the default is), then
forgets to re-enable it on exit (perhaps when it
crashes, which happens occasionally).
What commands could I run (other than "reboot") to
setup the power saver modes again when I notice the
monitor hasn't shut itself off for half a day?
Is the "xset" command the only one I'd need, or
are there 47 different helpful subsystems involved
each one of which needs to be individually reset? :-).

vaio's screen brightness
by Andre Kirchner
Hi all,
I have just installed Fedora Core 6 in a Vaio laptop,
and everything is fine except for the screen's
brightness, which is too dark.
Does anyone know how do I adjust it, or where can I
find more information about it?
Thanks,
Andre

Multiple linuxes with grub and one boot partition
by Cliff Avey
I've got an FC3 system build with /boot (and grub) on hda1, swap on
hda2, / (root) on hda5 (extended partition) and /var on hda6. I'd like
to install a separately booted FC7 on this box and add it to my main
grub menu. I'm thinking the following would work, but I'd appreciate
some advice if this is a reasonable way to go. I thought I'd create new
hda7 and hda8 partitions for the root of the new FC7 and /var
respectively and install FC7 there, with no separate partition for
/boot. I'd then copy the kernel from /boot on hda7 by hand to hda1,
update the grub menu on hda1, delete the /boot dir on hda7 and edit the
fstab on the FC7 system to mount hda1 as /boot.
Is there a more straightforward way to accomplish this, or is this the
way to do it? Alternatively, can I make the FC7 installer to add its
kernel to my existing boot (hda1 partition), not reformat that partition
or erase the other kernels, and not blow away my existing grub menu? Or
do I really want to create a second boot partition (maybe on hda3) for FC7?

Problem with bcm43xx-80211 Revisited Again
by awrobinson-ml@nc.rr.com
Sorry I dropped off the thread, but Time Warner lost my Internet
connection for the better part of the week. I appreciate everyone's eyes
and help so far.
To summarize, I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.22.2-42.fc6 and then had to
upgrade to bcm43xx-80211 and version 4 of the drivers for my wireless.
Now after booting up, the radio is configured (iwconfig) and the adapter
is configured (ifconfig), but I cannot connect to the Internet. If I run
'ifup eth1', my network then works. It is as if 'ifconfig' was run
before 'iwconfig' during the bootup process.
While my Internet connection was out, I created a work-around. I created
an init.d script that runs 'ifup' and set it to run just before the
netfs script. I added 'ifconfig', 'iwconfig', 'iwlist' and 'ping'
commands before and after the 'ifup' to try to capture the state of the
interface before and after the 'ifup'. The results are listed below. I
don't see anything in there to indicate the problem. If any of you guys
do, please let me know.
Thanks!
Andrew Robinson

100% CPU useage with ZynAddSubFx. (Fedora 7)
by Nigel Henry
Out of interest has anyone got ZynAddSubFx working on Fedora 7. Each time I
launch it freezes up . I can still launch a terminal, and top shows xorg
having jumped from 5% to about 43%, and Gkrellm is showing 100% CPU useage.
I've a hell of a job to shutdown ZynAddSubFx, apart from killing it in ps
auxw.
Fernando at planetccrma used to sort out these music apps, but have appeared
to be taken over by maintainers at Fedora now, who appear to be making a crap
job of making sure that the app actually works.
I even tried DL'ing the tarball for it from sourceforge, but there is bugger
all info for installing it on Linux. Plenty of advice if you want to install
on Windoze though.
I've no problem with running ZynAddSubFx. I've plenty of other distro's where
it works ok. On Fedora7 though it does not work.
This is in no way directed at users on the list. I hope that some maintainers
may be reading this list also, and may get their shit together, and fix the
app.
Just a bit pished off at the moment.
Nigel.

Cant't find curses.h
by Robert McBroom
The section on building ones own kernel seems to no longer be in the install documentation or otherwise in the wiki and my memory is missing details. Google dredged up a copy of the older document. I've installed all the pieces I could find but none of the usual ways of modifying .config will work. Make menuconfig is missing curses.h. Other parts are missing from make xconfig. yum whatprovides has nothing to do. I really want to build the kernel module to read my hpfs partitions. I suppose I could ignore the warnings and just edit .config. Is there a new method that I haven't found the button box for or What?

yum updates does not keep packages
by Mark Panen
Hi
Looking through the man page for yum it states that yum will keep the
updates packages till you delete them. But this is not happening to me
on Fedora 7.
Is there a switch to run "yum install" and keep the downloaded packages on disk.
