FC6 has gotten me frustrated
by Aaron Konstam
After fighting with For 9 months I am exhausted. I had to get the sound
card to be recognized, to get the machine to shutoff when I shut it
down, etc it has finally almost defeated me. It has worked for 6 months
or more but suddenly during a yum update last week the network slowed
down to a crawl. I did not update anything for awhile but now to use the
web browser to load the web page of the local lan's router takes maybe 5
minutes if it loads at all.
I can ping the router with out problem but yum actions just slow to a
halt, going to an external web page is impossible.
The resolv.conf has not changed, neither has the hosts file. Right now I
am stumped any other suggestions out there.
Since I am heavy into F7 I am the point of thinking of giving the
machine to Goodwill. Any help would be appreciated.

desktop-effects with Gnome and KDE on F7
by Jesus Jr M Salvo
I have just enabled desktop effects on Gnome in F7. ( Well, prior to
that, I have to add that Composite extension and add the line to omit
xfree86-dga in xorg.conf ... then install the various berly packages
).
I can see the wobbling effects on the windows in Gnome ... but I could
not figure out how to actually have the cube workspaces ( I have both
wobbling effects and cube workspace checkboxes enabled ). Do I need to
do something else ?
If I use KDE instead, I don't get the wobbling effects, but I do
recognise that menus are somewhat animated ( drawn from small, then
bigger and bigger until it reaches its normal size ), or a sliding
effect. All of this is actual fast, so perhaps the only reason I
noticed it was because I was conscious that I enabled desktop effects
in Gnome.
Looking at KDE Control Center, there is now a Beryl option under
"Appearance and Themes". This option shows Opacity and Shadows. Under
the "Style" option in Control Panel and then the "Effects" toolbar, I
also see "Enable GUI Effects" which is checked, and they all have the
"Animate" option selected, except for the "Menu tear-off handles"
which has "Application Level".
So my questions are:
1) How do I get cube workspaces in Gnome ? ( The option is checked in
"Desktop Effects" ).
2) How do I have wobbling windows in KDE ?
3) How do I have cube workspaces in KDE ?
What other "effects" could I do ?

Address book - LDAP or MySQL?
by Timothy Murphy
I'm thinking of setting up an address-book on my server,
but I'm not sure whether to use LDAP or MySQL.
As I see it, LDAP is actually designed for this,
and seems to have a more-or-less standard address-book format.
On the other hand, I'm already using MySQL for several things,
eg gallery2.
But there doesn't seem to be any standard address-book format
for SQL.
Another thing, kmail and other mail clients
seem to have standard LDAP interfaces.
I don't really like LDAP, but it seems the way to go.
Is that right ... ?
I'd be interested to hear your views.

kernels going worst and worst (fc6) and no answer on this list
by François Patte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Bonjour,
I can see people getting problems when they update their kernel: one
cannot get his preceding resolution on his monitor, another one has no
more printer....
I posted some messages about new problems after updating my kernel....
NO ANSWER!
I post again, in hope... before switching to another distro...
USB:
At the early beginning of kernel boot, I can read this message:
USB 3-1 device descriptor read/64 error -71
(repeated four times)
USB 3-1 device not accepting address 5 error -71
and... my scanner no longer works....
LVM:
When I installed fc6, I used lvm and no problem occured with the first
kernel.
When I updated the kernel (I'm now using the last one), I got this
message at the early beginning of boot up:
volume with uuid P3thCb-...... (long sequence of letters and figures)
not found...
this message repeated at least 3 times.
The system boots at last but from where is this uuid read? I cannot find
it anywhere (/dev/disk/byuuid, using command blkid, etc...)
Added today, after updating the kernel, this new message:
WARNING: VG name fedora: existing f50a09-..... (created here) takes
precedence over 6cB1NT-.....
ETH1:
WARNING: Kernel Errors Present
e1000: eth1: e1000_request_irq: Unable to allocate MSI interrupt
Error: -22 ...: 1 Time(s)
I never got any answer! do kernel developers never read this list?
What will happen with the next kernel? System won't boot? shall I lose
my printer? My soundcard?
Regards.

Upgrading to Fedora 7 from Live CD?
by Pierre Sarrazin
Hi. Is it possible to upgrade to Fedora 7 from the Live CD?
I'm trying to upgrade a CD-only Fedora 5 machine to Fedora 7.
Clicking on the "Install to Hard Drive" icon starts the Fedora
Installer, which only offers to do a fresh install, but not an
upgrade.
If the Live CD does not support upgrading, then how can I
reliably upgrade a Fedora 5 system on a CD-only machine?
Thanks.

Update methods
by Karl Larsen
I know people are working on GUI methods of Updates. I used that
early in my experiance with FC6 and it was a bad one. There were a lot
of updates, I didn't really know what was happening and it went on for 8
hours.
Since then I see the little flag come on saying you have some
updates and I send it away. Then in a seperate window I bring up a
terminal, make it root, and type "yum update" and then go back to what I
was doing. I go back and eventually it needs me to tell it to do it.
Right now I want to see what is coming. Soon I will modify the call to
"yum -y update" and I don't have do anything.

which grub to edit?
by Thufir
pardon if I posted this before. I was working on grub last night.
Win2k and Fedora 7 are on sda (hda) while FC3 is on sdb (hdb). The
MBR on sda is being used, I believe.
Which grub do I edit to get all OS's booting? I tried a few
variations, mucking with the one in /boot/grub/... from FC3, but
wasn't able to hit on the correct combination.

F7: Evolution constantly crashing
by Renich Bon Ciric
Hello,
I'm having trouble with evolution... and, somehow, I think it's not an
evolution bug...
Sometime evolution (and gthumb viewer, games and some others) freeze. I
don't always get a bugbudy screen but, when I do, I always see some
thread64 lib that has something to do with it.
I have installed the debug symbols so I can post a real good bug about
this. I promise to take note of the exact library next time I get a
bugbudy screen (or do a traceback).
Anyway, I think we have a bug in some multythread lib... anybody
experiencing anything like this?
p.s. I've read enough "evolution sucks; use thunderbird" so please
refrain... if possible ;=s
