Playing Midi files for Intel AC'97
by Chu Jeang Tan
I've a Dell 4550 with Intel integrated AC'97 sound card.
# lspci
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM
(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)
# aplaymidi -l
Port Client name Port name
14:0 Midi Through Midi Through Port-0
Based on above aplaymidi output, does that mean my card does not have a
on-board sound table of sort, so, there isn't a virtual port that allows
me to send midi commands to, and have it played through dsp?
Currently, I'm able to use Timidity to process a midi file, translate it
to wave and output to dsp. However, I believe this approach is not
integrated to alsa. As a result, I think, Audacious isn't able to play
midi, because alsa system isn't setup to play midi.
Below is lsmod output, I'm not sure if I missed loading some modules.
# lsmod | grep snd

Battery power icon charge status feedback
by Sam Varshavchik
In FC6, when on AC power, the battery icon provided some feedback regarding
the charge status. As the battery was charging, the icon would show a
progressively full battery.
Now, in FC6, the charge icon appears to be a static image, and I must move
the cursor on top of it to see the battery's charge status.
Am I the only one who finds this a backwards step? By following certain
charge/discharge practices, I find that I can greatly prolong my laptop's
battery. After 4-5 months of heavy use, it did not seem to have lost any
noticable capacity. To do that, I rely on the battery's charge status, and I
used to be able to simply monitor it out of a corner of my eye, but now I
need to mouse over it.
Is there anything in FC7 that will pop up a window anytime the battery's
charge exceeds or drops below a configurable level?

Printing 'Info' ??
by Bill Case
Hi;
Does anybody know of or have a good little gui program, script, or
command line program for printing 'info' pages. Up to now I have been
using emacs + info, or cut and paste then print, or lpr -node.
I want something slightly more sophisticated. Print several related
nodes, a whole node tree with some nodes excluded, etc.
Have googled and sourceforged. Maybe I am not using the correct search
criteria ("Info print" and variations)?

fonts in firefox
by Tom Spec
I am trying to start using Fedora on the desktop, but one thing that really bothers me is that the fonts often look pretty bad in firefox (compared to how they look in Windows.) I notice this in particular at Yahoo Mail. Are there any quick fixes for this? Maybe I am missing some packages or something?
Thanks,
Tom

Need to block ?
by Bob Goodwin
What is the correct notation for blocking a range of addresses in my router?
If I block 64.18.5.13 it simply moves up to 64.18.5.14.
I thought the proper way to do it was 64.18.5.0/255 but obviously that's
wrong or at least doesn't work for me.
Whatever it is has run my upload data allotment up to 3gigs and I'm only
allowed 5g for 30 days! So this is a panic and I haven't been able to
find why this is possible?

Dvorak keyboard shortcuts
by Dotan Cohen
As a Hebrew, QWERTY, and Dvorak keyboard layout user, I'm especially
interested in configuring Fedora's keyboard shortcuts so that they
will always be the same physical key no matter what keyboard layout
and application I'm in. I've looked into this before, and I think that
I've seen solutions proposed (at the X level, maybe?), but googling
the issue has yet to find a solution for me. Please, what must one
configure so that keyboard shortcuts are bound to physical keys, and
therefore not dependent upon keyboard layout?
Thanks in advance. This has been one of the biggest issues for me
since moving from that_other_os over a year ago. I'd like to have it
resolved, once and for all.

Grub inacuracies
by Karl Larsen
I am reading info grub and when I got to making a grub bootable cd-rom I
just checked and one file you needed was from /usr/lib/grub/ which
doesn't exist on FC6. On a chance I tried /usr/share/grub/ and that will
work.
So far the reading has me afraid to try anything :-[
They say you can sure screw up the system without even trying. This is
why I *think* I want a CD-Rom with Grub on it to recover from disaster.
But even this is not certain yet.
Has anyone else tried to work with Grub?

Press F5
by Karl Larsen
I was pleased with the Fedora Core 6 DVD Rescue Mode. It starts with you
pressing F5 and then at the prompt type "linux rescue" and it comes up
looking like your loading a new Linux partition but then it branches to
a place you choose which existing Linux partition to mount on the rescue
Linux.
Then I typed grub and got into the grub shell. Typed grub> quit and got
out of the shell. Then got on this Linux at /boot/grub/ and with the joe
editor (THANK YOU!) brought up grub.conf in joe and could have done
anything.
So the Fedora Core 6 Rescue Mode is the way to go. Now I need to learn
what to DO.

Grub sucks!
by Karl Larsen
I have made 3 CD-Rom's following instructions with care from info
grub and while close it's still not right. I took the things from my
/boot/grub/ directory and put them in the .iso file and made the last
CD. It comes up just like the page I get when I turn on my computer! Cool.
Alas when you try to boot anything it errors out ends with hit any
key and your back looking again. Better than nothing.
I guess I need to look at grub.conf and try and figure out what I
need to change but nothing comes to mind now.
