Looking for GNOME language bar (?): Want to switch input language quickly
by Matthias Kredler
When installing Fedora 7, I included language support for
English and Japanese. It seems to me that the required
package for Japanese is there, since Japanese web sites
are displayed.
My problem is the following: I would like to have something
like a language bar in GNOME so that I can change
quickly from inputting English text to inputting Japanese
characters in one session without having to re-boot. I
believe that I saw some language bar with customizable
keyboard shortcuts to do just that in Fedora Core 6 on
friends machine, but I couldn't find any reference to
something like this in the Fedora 7 support and when
searching the web.
Any suggestions would be great!

Yum Update Problem

Hi All,
I tried to perform a 'yum update' this evening and am receiving the
following errors:

Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: macromedia
I tried disabling the "macromedia" repoistory think it may have just been a problem with them. Doing this produces the following out:
[root@localhost tony]# yum -y --disablerepo=macromedia update
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Update Process
Setting up repositories
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=updates-released-fc6&arc... error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')>
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates
I am not sure whether it would have an affect (or produce this error), but this only started occurring after I physically changed the processor inside my laptop. I changed from an Intel 3Ghz
to a 2.8Ghz Celeron (I know its downgrading but there seemed to be a fault with the better processor).
Was wondering if someone might be able to shed some light onto this problem?
All the best.
Cheers,

F7T4... Now what?
by Chris Schumann
I've been using Fedora for a few years... very happily on my T60, crankily
on my 600X. I haven't found an acceptable (read: working) solution to get
sound working through a suspend/resume cycle. (That's the main reason my
wife won't let me install it on her 600X.)
So I want to help out and give F7T4 a try on this 600X. Fedora's main page
says "This is the time we MUST have full community participation" and then
says nothing on how to help out.
By reading the release announcement, I can see how to get it, and where to
file bugs, so I'll take that route.
Here we go!

[FC6 x86_64] X does not start
by lanas
Folks,
Sometimes X will not start on a x86_64 nvidia geforce 6600 machine.
The system boots to the prompt. So what I do then is this, as root:
cd /tmp
rm -fr .*
rm -fr *
kdm
Then X starts, as well as KDE. Some fonts are missing (in emacs), but
at least the system works.
Then I reboot and it generally starts OK the next time.
But from time to time, it boots back to the prompt. It's
annoying on the part of a mature system but then I have all my audio
tools in there.
If I was to put the above instructions, except from kdm) in the
normal boot sequence, where would be the best place amongst the boot
scripts ?

Howto adjust screen position on lcd?
by Neal Becker
I just bought a new viewsonic vg2030wm. I'm using nvidia (nonfree). I used
the nvidia config to setup for 1680x1050, which is the native res for this
monitor, but the display needs to move up about 1/2 inch. Any ideas how to
do this?

Booting CDs on a Dell GX280 tip
by Michael Wiktowy
Greetings list,
I have been having issues booting from burned media on my Dell
GX280's. I know it is a good boot CD since other machines (including
the closely related GX260) boot the same disk fine. I think Dell put a
CD drive in these models that is a bit more picky as to the type of
CD-R media used with it as "pressed" CDs boot fine.
Just passing on a tip to get these things booting off of burnable
media: burn your install/LiveCD ISOs on to DVD-R/RW or mini-DVD-RW.
The included DVD-ROM drive reads and boots them just fine. It may work
for others having issues with booting from burnt media on flakey CD
drives ... at least on newer machines. I know there are a few of you
out there judging from reading the mailing list.

Fullscreen in Mplayer
by Dotan Cohen
According to the 'man', one should be able to toggle the mplayer size
with command-1,2,3,4 and achieve fullscreen with command-f. Assuming
that 'command' is the Ctrl key, then Ctrl-F does in fact make the
player window full screen, however the video stays the same size.
Thus, I have a mostly-black screen. Ctlr-1,2,3,4 do nothing, however.
Am I assuming incorrectly? Neither the Tux key nor the Alt key modify
the window when pressed with F, thus I assume that the command key is
Ctrl.
Thanks in advance for any solutions.

Issues with AMD AM2 and NVIDIA 590 (GA-M59SLI-S5)
by Gerald B. Cox
Is anyone else aware of linux kernel issues around the AMD AM2 and/or
NVidia 590 chipset? I've submitted several bug reports and from what
I gather from the replies and other postings there appears to be
issues running back to last August, but when I do a bugzilla search I
don't find a lot of information. Seems like it's a well known fact
that most folks need to use NOAPIC when booting - and this issue isn't
limited to a specific distribution. Looks like a pervasive issue.
Here's the bug:

User creation script
by Ashley M. Kirchner
Anyone have pointers (or examples) of a script that can be used to
create new users and set their password at the same time? I need
something I can call like so:
script USERNAME PASSWORD
...and have it return 1 or 0 for failure or success.
This is going to be used by another application with the arguments
USERNAME and PASSWORD passed to it. And this will also be running
through sudo (from some protected area.)

setpci question
by Brian Walter
Greetings,
I'm attempting to change the pci latency for my SATA controller. Based
on information I found from various sources, the following *should*
work. However, when I do the setpci, the latency remains unchanged. Am
I missing something?
lspci -v

Is this just a function of the controller/MB? Or am I missing something
obvious?
The motherboard is Asus M2N-SLI deluxe.
TIA
