live F7 test4
by Eric Tanguy
I just download the i386 gnome live version and it works fine. Mainly my
wireless ralink card work out of the box with networkmanager. I just try
it with broadcast and without security (wpa or wep) without broadcast it
can't associate. There is a lot of error messages in dmesg but it works
fine.
My main question is about mp3 and fluendo codec. I believed that when
you try to play a mp3 file something say to you some disclaimer and help
you to install free fluendo mp3 plugin but i found nothing. When i
installed this plugin i had to run a selinux command (chcon) to make it
usuable by totem. It's a shame.
Apart this, it's a beautifull system which works very fine and with
great improvements.
Thanks

Soft link pathname conversion for Linux and Unix
by John Horne
Hi,
I have a shell problem that I am trying to easily resolve. If I have a
directory with a soft (symbolic) link in it such as:
fred -> ../bin/csh
How can I convert the '../bin/csh' in to a full pathname? Is there a
command to do this that will work for Linux and Unices? I need it to
work for all circumstances, not just this one particular example. So
something like '../../abc/../def' should also work in being converted.
Under Linux the 'readlink -f' command works fine, but NetBSD readlink
doesn't have the '-f' option, and Solaris doesn't have readlink. I do
not want to change directory at all, so changing to the link directory
and issuing 'pwd' isn't what I want to do.
My only other thought is to process the link pathname bit-by-bit.
Preceed the pathname with the current working directory and then remove
any './' and jiggle (!) with any '../' to get the directory above. It's
messy and could get complicated. Better ideas welcome :-)
Thanks,
John.

My experiences with doing this is to end up re-installing and losing all
my files that are not backed up. Heck, I hear the screams regularly
from Windows users that have just lost their report that they were
working on when Word crashes and there are no files left. I still
cannot figure this one out.

Boot into rescue and go. But I have yet to run into a crash that
required installing the Software CD. If I had a crash that bad, then I
would be looking at hardware issues. My last major crash was due to a
failing power supply and it was causing hard drive errors. Didn't
require a re-install.

I have had this happen in Windows where removing a program would remove
a required *.dll or worse, trash the registry file.
What command did you use? If you use the wrong command, then you can
wipe out everything. Of course you can do this in Windows as well. You
did read the dependency list before you said yes.
Now tell us the truth on how you removed your X-server? Inquiring minds
want to know. :) We have all made stupid mistakes like the time I
typed in rm -rf * in /root some years ago. Oops.

allows me not by reason that it is assigned to an app. How I can change
that? Thanks.

Java plugin v1.6.0 nukes Firefox
by Colin Brace
Hi all,
I've been using Java 1.5.0_06 for awhile without problem.
Several days ago I just noticed that the azureus release notes recommended
v1.5.0_10 or higher because it fixes some memory leaks. The latest java at
java.com is v1.6.0_01. I downloaded this and installed it, changing the
symlink in the firefox plugins directory to point to the newer version.
However, when I tried to run FF v2.0.0.3, it kept crashing at startup until
I reverted to the older version. Anyone else seen this problem?
