AFAIK, the problem with the Intel DG965 motherboards & the 965 Express
chipset has been there since the systems were released - using irqpoll &
all-generic-ide was the only way to install Fedora on them. The ide components
could only be accessed that way. Users who had a pure SATA system
were OK (although the sound system was only recently supported by
the 1.0.13 release of alsa). The problem is independent of the
type of hardware attached to the ide port - with the 'standard' kernel
options, ide components are not seen.
I was hoping that the latest release of the kernel (2.6.19-1.2985) would
detect the ide components without using the "all-generic-ide" & "irqpoll"
options, but alas, no - is this something for bugzilla?
I'd be interested to hear from users who have this motherboard
whether they have the same problems or have found other
workarounds.
Since Windows detects and operates everything perfectly, I
doubt that it is a problem with the motherboard or components,
but rather reflects the reality that there are relatively few
kernel programmers available to support a wide range of equipment.

OT: dual-core or 64 bit?
by Mick M.
Hi list;
this is off topic.
I was wondering which is better a dual-core x86 cpu or an x64 cpu?
Which is actually faster/better in "normal" use?
How about installation problems and hardware cost?
I am not planning any upgrades just yet but am curios.

Glest graphics ??
by Bill Case
Hi;
I am not a gamer normally but I thought I would download 'Glest' and try
it.
I have a graphics problem using it. I tried to get an answer on the
Glest mailing list a month ago but got no response.
When I open Glest I get all the opening screens and setup windows and
graphics correctly but when it is ready to play all that I see on the
screen is a little half inch square of red square dots that looks like
something trying to be a full scale map. There is a very small
animation in the centre of the red square trying to be the main
character -- I suspect.
I believe I have enough power to run this game. I have 640 Mb ram; a
Radeon 9600 pro video card; and, FC6 on a P4 1.3.
I am asking because I have some lingering doubts X windows has set my
new(er) video card (the 9600) completely correctly although the display
configuration and the Xlog seems right.
Any diagnostic suggestions gratefully accepted.

Re: Kopete & video

Hi,
I do not think there is anything wrong with the driver for
most cameras. Mine (Creative, ntsc), has pretty acceptable colors.
But there are many issues involved to stream audio and video.
1) Enough bandwidth (minimum 600Kb for download and upload)
2) Firewall rules
3) NAT forward rules (sometimes, STUN is unavoidable)
4) A known protocol
I have used my camera with a home solution, called freemeeting,
and I could send and receive audio and video very well. This software
is intended for video-conferences. Either, I had very good results with
motion,
which can be used to remotely monitor an ambient, and send images via
an http connection.
Sometime ago, I also tested many soft-phones in linux,
such as Skype, ekiga, wengophone, ohphone, linphone, X-Lite.
Some of them can also send video. Mileage varied, depending mostly
on the available bandwidth (ideal >= 2Mb)
This is how I forwarded ports in my router:
TCP 6890 - 6900 192.168.254.x MSN
UDP 6890 - 6900 192.168.254.x MSN
UDP 5000 - 5100 192.168.254.x Ekiga
TCP 30000 - 30010 192.168.254.x Ekiga
TCP 1720 192.168.254.x H323 (Ohphone/AOL)
TCP 5060 - 5061 192.168.254.x sip
UDP 7070 - 7089 192.168.254.x siproxd
UDP 10600 - 10601 192.168.254.x wengophone
As a last remark, the last time I tried skype (maybe a year ago)
in windows XP, my computer rebooted every time I sent and received video
simultaneously. So, uncle Bill also had his problems...
