Gimp 2.4.0 in F7
by Christopher A. Williams
I know it only released a couple of days ago, but are there any specific
plans to include GIMP 2.4.0 as an update in F7?
I'm assuming we'll eventually see it in F8 since 2.4.0RC is in there
now...
Cheers,
Chris

Printing: how to setup.
by Strong
I got an old Epson's matrix printer connected to my laptop Dell
Inspiron 1501 at usb port through a converting cable (from lpt port).
Somehow with the help system-config-printer I have set it up to print.
But it does not work always - and there are hard times when I need to
print and I can not. I have noticed some magic with wither the cable is
inserted into usb port on laptop start or not, was the printer turned
on before the usb connector insertion or after, etc. From this magic
depends whether I have printing or I am in trouble since it refuses to
print. That is how it happens: I send to print from OO - the printer is
set to be default device a window appears that it was sent to be
printed, in KDE's printers (I use KDE) I see a job is hanging with
status 'processing...' and the printer does nothing.
So, what I want is:
1. Set it up the way it works *always*.
2. Tune it up with the margins printing.
Here are some questions I've got with this:
1. Which tool to use: I have at least 2 in my F7 (upgraded from FC6):
KDE's and the above mentioned system-config. Here is the problem: in
system-config I can not specify the device - now it is set as
usb://unknown/ Seems, it is /dev/usb/lp0 - but I do not how to set it
up there - may hence the printer does not work. Seems it works through
cups. In KDE's when it is fired up, informs that the printer has
unknown to the tool params and they will not be modified - since the
dilemma which tool to use.
2. How to specify (find out) the printer's device?
Thanks for answers if any.

Yum on several machines
by Timothy Murphy
I know this question has been asked, and answered,
many times before, but I cannot find a reference at the moment.
I want to yum-update on several machines,
and I want to avoid repeatedly downloading the same packages.
So what I want when I run "yum update" on machine A
is for it to look for RPMs in a specified directory
(perhaps mounted through NFS on all machines)
and use these RPMs if they exist rather than downloading them.

Yum problem
by Michael Semcheski
Hi,
I think the last time I ran yum, it was a 'yum update'. I don't
remember for sure.
However, today I ran yum and got the following error. No matter what
arguments I give it, the result is the same:
There was a problem importing one of the Python modules
required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:
No module named storagefactory
Please install a package which provides this module, or
verify that the module is installed correctly.
It's possible that the above module doesn't match the
current version of Python, which is:
2.5 (r25:51908, Apr 10 2007, 10:29:13)
[GCC 4.1.2 20070403 (Red Hat 4.1.2-8)]
If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to
the yum faq at:

KDE volume control
by Konstantin Svist
Hi all,
I'm still running FC6, but I've played around a little with F7.
One thing that bugs me about it is that the volume control indicator is
nowhere to be found. I didn't dig in very deeply into the settings, but
couldn't find it after a cursory examination of options in Control
Center and KMix. The keyboard volume control buttons still work, but I
miss this indicator. Any way of bringing it back? Will it be accessible
in F8?
Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

New horizon's
by Karl Larsen
Those of you in the know are hinting that ext3, and mount and fdisk,
and grub as we know it now will be replaced by other tools that work
with a new computer design. It sounds a lot like the New Windows that is
not working out as well as hoped.
I know many in business were sent the new Windows as part of a deal
and after the guys tried it for a few weeks they sent it back and
reloaded the old XP. This is happening in many places.
My plan is to stay with Fedora X-1 which is the one before the one
that has the new file system.

Where to report bugs against the fedora repository ?
by Oded Arbel
Hi people
I'm having some trouble with the mirrorlist script in the main fedora
repository - where can I report a bug against it ?
I didn't find a component that looks relevant under the "fedora" product
in the bugzilla, and the "redhat website" product didn't seem like the
right place.
Thanks in advance

start a new thread with the correct topic noted.

fc6 nearing eol but f7 not useable yet (rant or feedback?)
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
Rant or feedback? You decide. This is all IMHO.
I'm becoming concerned about the end of life for fc6. It has been
stable for me and is the first of the fedoras that gave me a
more-or-less useable multimedia experience. (vlc is awesome!) I'd like
to continue using fc6 but am guessing I need to create my own repository
before fc6 disappears from the public repos.
The reason I'm so concerned is f7 blows chunks. I've been running RH
and its ilk since 5.2 (never got 4 running because I couldn't afford a
Matrox video adapter way back then) and have to say this release is
buggier than my vegetable garden.
I'll start by logging into a Gnome session.
First mess is the "Package Updater". 1) That's not the !@#$%ing
program's name. Its toolbar icon has no properties associated with it
so I can't even tell what it launches. The app itself has no "About"
button. In fact, one must perform command line forensics to even find
out that the program's name is "pup". (I prefer the spanish
pronunciation.) Why, oh why, is every package preselected? Why is the
"update list" window not resizeable? Absolutely one of the worst user
interfaces I have ever used. Actually, it's hard to call it a UI since
there is no interaction allowed except "click the mouse several hundred
times", quit, or apply, and it provides no user feedback except when it
barfs on itself. Is it hanging? Is it running? Is it stalled?
Absolutely no way to tell. Oh, a dependency issue. Option of ignore or
continue? No way, those choices are not available. Error out.
Second, where did the Applications->Run Program option go?
Third, why does the bottom toolbar show up about two inches below the
top one? Right clicking on its far left edge gives me some options:
click "expand" twice and it returns to its position at the bottom.
Why are the toolbar widgets now locked to the toolbar? What, don't like
us rearranging things according to our own tastes? OK fine, just right
click, Unlock. Right click, Move. Swell. I get the plus sign shaped
move cursor but it doesn't work! I can't rearrange the toolbars.
Well, maybe it's got its panties in a bunch. I'll just logout and try
again. Oh my! Isn't this sweet. Where are the toolbars? Why doesn't
right click do anything? Fortunately, I shortcut keyed an xterm.
Enter the shortcut key combo and I get an xterm window with borders and
no prompt, no cursor, zippadeedoodah!
OK. Ctrl-Alt-F1 gives me a mingetty. "useradd nextvictim; passwd
nextvictim; init 3; init 5". Login as nextvictim and logout. Login
again as nextvictim and ecco! Where are the toolbars? Desktop void of
everything except the background image, no right click response, just
another dead session.
As a side note, this box has been around for a while and has lots of
distros scattered throughout its drives, and all of them are rock solid
so this definitely points to f7 and not the hardware.
Q: if it's really to be known as f7 why are the kernels named
"something.fc7"? I think the decision to change the naming scheme
wasn't wise. Google on f7 and you'll get lots of hits on the function
key but very little on fedora.
Q: why was it decided to put marketing names on the applications and
remove their properties? How are we supposed to help debug, etc, if the
program identities are hidden from us? This decision forces users back
into CLI mode. Kind of defeats the whole GUI approach, doesn't it?
Apologies to all who have put in so much hard work but this release
looks like it was done by speed freaks with a mouse compulsion who love
python, not because it's polymorphic, but because they don't have to pay
attention to types, and since they don't have to pay attention to types
then, what the hey, why pay attention to the differences between lists
and dictionaries? (definitely a rant!)
Enough for now. I have to figure out why I have two different versions
of dbus with mangled dependencies (which cause pup to bomb). I'll also
take a look at KDE to see if I have better luck there.
I would be curious to hear from early adopters what their f(c)8
experiences have been like.
Thanks for listening to my $0.02,
Mike Wright :m)
