OpenSwan & SonicWall
by Chris
Does anyone have valid docs or links on how to get OpenSwan to work
with a SonicWall device?
The 2 I have seen are horribly inaccurate.
TIA

can't read from a Ricoh SD (Secure Digital) card reader
by Tim
I have an Asus PRO31J F3JC laptop with a Ricoh SD card reader that
Fedora is slightly aware that it's in the computer, but doesn't actually
do anything with it. I gave Ubuntu (7.10) a try last night, and it can
read from the card. I know little about Ubuntu, other than it being
Debian in disguise (and I've never used Debian), to know whether we can
purloin anything from it to use with Fedora. Does anybody know if we
can?
Fedora's lspci|grep Ricoh output:
06:01.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Ricoh Co Ltd R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller
06:01.1 Generic system peripheral [0805]: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 19)
06:01.2 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd Unknown device 0843 (rev 01)
06:01.3 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter (rev 0a)
Ubuntu's lspci|grep Ricoh output:
Fedora's lspci|grep Ricoh output:
06:01.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Ricoh Co Ltd R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller
06:01.1 Generic system peripheral [0805]: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 19)
06:01.2 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C843 MMC Host Controler (rev 01)
06:01.3 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter (rev 0a)
Yes, the in-built card read is a PCI device. And, yes, I can read my SD
cards using an external USB adaptor, but it's not convenient having
things hanging out of the laptop. No, I can't add a PCMCIA card reader,
the laptop has an ExpressCard slot, instead, and I've not seen anybody
selling those, nor do I know if they'll be supported.

BIOS upgrading
by korgull
Hi,
After installing fedora on my system, I was no longer able to boot in windows
(or fedora). It seemed grub failed due to a bad BIOS, so I was in need for a
BIOS upgrade.
Since my machine didn't have a floppy drive and no OS to boot, I was looking
for other solutions.
The method that should have worked is downloading a freedos image, mount it,
copy it...add the flash utilility files and use mkisofs to create a new
image. Unfortunately in my case freedos failed to recognise my DVD drive
(probably BIOS related again) so I couldn't read the disk.
Fortunately I found that when booting freedos using the 'freedos only" option
that it could read my USB memory stick. So basically I could have upgraded my
BIOS just using the freedos iso image I got from the net. It worked out well
to upgrade the BIOS this way. The problem I have with all of this, is that
finding a solution like this takes far too much time. I hope there are better
ways to get the job done, but haven't been able to find it.
I wonder how other fedora users upgrade their BIOS when they need it and would
be happy to hear about other creative and preferably simple solutions (but
leaving the floppy drive on my dusty shelf).

Marcel

Removing SFTP icons after F7 NFS install
by Simon Slater
G'day,
I have installed F7 on a laptop via NFS. Under Places->Network there
are 2 icons: SFTP File Transfer on Acer (laptop) and SFTP File Transfer
on Lockie (source of iso) which cannot be deleted as user or root with
the message: "Operation not permitted" while deleting
"network:///...._tcp.local
A search for .local doesn't show anything anding in _tcp.local. How do
I remove these?

media descriptor issue help please
by Dave Stevens
Hi,
I have a F7 box that works fine. Recently a Windows computer was hit by a
stray 220 volt jolt and the power supply died. I will in due course replace
the power supply and see if the mobo is hooped, but for the moment I am
really interested in seeing if I can recover the data off the drive. I've put
the drive, a Seagate ATA 40 gig into the F7 drive where it lives alongside
the primary (F7) drive, a Seagate SATA 320.
The BIOS correctly detects the type and model of the ATA drive and the dmesg
messages indicate that it is correctly detected. The BIOS messages state the
capacity and interface correctly and say that S.M.A.R.T. is enabled and no
errors are detected. If I set the box to boot from the ATA drive Windows XP
tries to boot and offers a set of boot options. No matter which one I choose
Windows starts to boot then acts as if it can't deal with the drastically
different hardware it finds and reboots.
This leads me to believe that there is recoverable data on the drive but I
can't mount it in F7. Messages from dmesg read in part as below:
ata7: PATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x00000000000101f0 ctl 0x00000000000103f6 bmdma
0x000000000001ffa0 irq 14
ata8: PATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x0000000000010170 ctl 0x0000000000010376 bmdma
0x000000000001ffa8 irq 15
ata7.00: ATA-6: ST340810A, 3.39, max UDMA/100
ata7.00: 78165360 sectors, multi 16: LBA
ata7.00: configured for UDMA/100
The drive is jumpered and cabled as primary master
A mounting attempt onto empty directory /mnt/win gives :
[root@localhost mnt]# mount /dev/sdb -t vfat win
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
[root@localhost mnt]# dmesg | tail
Bluetooth: HIDP (Human Interface Emulation) ver 1.2
ip6_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team

nf_conntrack version 0.5.0 (8192 buckets, 65536 max)
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
hfs: unable to find HFS+ superblock
hfs: unable to find HFS+ superblock
FAT: invalid media value (0xb9)
VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev sdb.
So it seems that there is an invalid media descriptor on the ATA drive. But
the information seems to not be conclusive because in fact the Windows boot
sector is detected and a partial boot into Windows does in fact take place. I
don't know what to make of this or what to do next.
Ideas? Diagnostics?

gallery2

Bonjour,
Does anyone has installed gallery2 for fc6 and has java applets working?
I want to have Remote Gallery and Download applet working but:
1- I am asked for jpegtran which is not found in spite of the fact that
it is installed
2- At the end Remote Gallery does not work
3- Download applet complains that the http address I am connecting to
when I want to upload photos, is not a valid address. The funny thing is
that I am connected to this address to launch the applet "comprenne qui
pourra!"
I run fc6, gallery 2 from this release and jre is installed from sun site.
Thanks for help.

Cut and paste behavior
by Chu Jeang Tan
I find that if I cut some text from an app, once the app is closed the
text in the clipboard is also cleared.
Is this a linux feature, or some bug that happens on my installation?
Thanks
