auto login root
by Tom Spec
Is it possible for me to have the root account automatically login when the system boots (gnome)?
I am aware of the security implications of this. I just want to know how it can be setup (if it is possible.)

FC4 NIS client problems
by Alberto Ferrante
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256
Dear all,
I have discovered some problems with the ypbind daemon included in FC4.
At boot time the daemon doesn't starts correctly and the error message
reported in /var/log/messages is the following:
portmap[2270]: connect from 127.0.0.1 to set(ypbind): request from
unprivileged port
ypbind[2266]: Unable to register (YPBINDPROG, YPBINDOLDVERS, udp).
I have 40 PCs with the same problem (while another different PC, also
with FC4 ha no problems...) ... And all of them were working just fine
before... Well, before something happened. I think the problem should be
due to some updates, but I do not know which ones. These PCs are used by
students and they started reporting problems just today. In the last
days the lab have been pretty empty though, therefore the problem may
have been there for a longer time (let's say 20 days).
It looks like by restarting the daemon after the boot solves the problem.
Any hint for this?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Alberto

SELinux in the way of automated rsync
by J.L. Coenders
Hi,
I am trying to automate a backup with rsync to a second disc using a cronjob.
I am running fc5. The script works fine when I run it manually, but if I try
to run it as a cronjob it fails with a lot of rsync errors.
When looking at the system logs, I suspect that SELinux is blocking rsync.
How do I correct this?
Messages are like this:
Aug 1 09:09:43 localhost kernel: audit(1154416183.900:651): avc: denied {
search } for pid=19905 comm="rsync" name="/" dev=sda1 ino=2
scontext=system_u:system_r:rsync_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:default_t:s0
tclass=dir
Could anyone show me to some easy to understand explanation of SELinux? So far
I only find quite complex ones.
Thanks.
Regards,
Jeroen

RE: fedora-list Digest, Vol 30, Issue 16
by Randy Easley
Use FC3 or higher on Dell Poweredge Servers. I use the exact same setup you have and it works very well. Hardware raid will not work however.
I began with FC3 and since have since updated straight to FC5 nicely.

I was wondering if older distros (like FC2 or those based on RH9)
would support the likes of SATA drives.

script to log work done on Servers
by David Desscan
We are different administrators to administrate Linux servers(Fedora Core
and RHEL). Sometimes we use remote access ssh and su to perform important
tasks and read logs. Since we use the same admin username and password, it
is sometimes difficult to know who has done what and when. Is it possible
to log tasks and use different accounts with admin privileges on linux? I
would also like to write a script which will echo a warning message when
commands like rm is used and eventually prevent irrecoverable actions on
important system folders like /bin /sbin /etc /boot and /home. Thanks for
help and any referred web link.

IPTABLES question
by Michael Yep
Hello
I know that the preferred way of controlling access is to use
whitelists, but for my case I'd like to use IP blacklisting.
Now using a script like
#!/bin/bash
if [ -f badips.txt ]
then
for BAD_IP in `cat badips.txt`
do
iptables -A INPUT -s $BAD_IP -j DROP
done
else
echo "Can't read badips.txt"
fi
I have like 96 banned IPs so far. I am wondering about the possible
performance hit on my system, and the limits of iptables.
What if I have thousands?

how to extract tar archive with r-xr-xr-x perms on .
by Chuck Anderson
Please Cc: me on any replies. Thanks.
I have a tar archive that someone managed to create with no-readable
directories in it, including '.'
dr-xr-xr-x user/group 0 2006-06-22 20:44 ./
dr-xr-xr-x user/group 0 2006-06-22 20:24 pos/
-r--r--r-- user/group 701771 2004-08-16 20:09 pos/foo
dr-xr-xr-x user/group 0 2006-06-22 21:19 ssl/
dr-xr-xr-x user/group 13423 2006-06-22 21:19 ssl/bar
When I try to extract the tar archive, it changes the permissions on .
and then cannot create directories under ., causing the entire
extraction to fail.
>tar xvzf files.tar.gz
./
pos/
tar: pos: Cannot mkdir: Permission denied
pos/foo
tar: pos/foo: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Skipping to next header
ssl/
tar: ssl: Cannot mkdir: Permission denied
ssl/bar
tar: ssl/bar: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
I've tried all sorts of options, and none of them seem to work (same
results as above):
tar -x --no-recursion --no-same-permissions -vzf files.tar.gz
tar -x --no-recursion --no-same-permissions -x -v -z -f files.tar.gz
Am I using tar correctly?

RE: FC4 NIS client problems
by Brian D. McGrew
It sounds like ypbind is starting before rpc.portmap?
We have a similar problem with FC3 and we actually shuffle the order of
some of the scripts in /etc/rc5.d to fix it. Check out what order your
programs are starting in.
:b!

upgrading python...
by bruce
hi.
i'min a situation where i might need to upgrade python. i have the current
version of python for FC3. i might need to have the version for FC4. i built
the version that's on FC4 from the python source RPM.
however, when i simply try to install the resulting RPM, the app gives me
dependency issues from apps that are dependent on the previous/current
version of python.
i'm trying to figure out if there's a 'best' way to proceed.
do i simply do the install, and force it to overwrite the current version of
python?
is there a way to point 'yum' at my new python RPM, and let yum take care of
dealing with any dependcy issues? and how would yum handle weird dependency
issues with RPMs that don't exist.. does yum have the ability to actually
build required apps from source?
comments/thoughts/etc...
thanks
-bruce
ps. the reason for this is that i'm looking at some of the newer
functionality in the 2.4 version of python over the 2.3
