Xen curiosity
by Tom Horsley
Just curious:
Suppose I have a system with several separate boot partitions
on it and several version of linux on the different partitions.
Can I install the Xen kernel on one of them, then teach Xen
to run the existing kernels from the other boot partitions
as guests?
Or does Xen insist on being the one who installed things to
be able to run them?
Let's make it an even bigger challenge: Suppose the kernels
are a mix of i386 and x86_64 kernels, can Xen run mixed
architecture guests at the same time?
(There is so much marketing hyperbabble on the Xen web sites,
I can't ever seem to find the answer to concrete questions
like this :-).

Re: Java Problems
by Jeanette Russo
Hi Jeanette,
A few things for you to try:
1. Can you type in "which java" and hit <Enter> and
show us the output?
/usr/bin/java
2. I'm not sure if you are using the right plug-in or
if it is going to
the right place (I have not used Sun's Java on Linux
before). You seem
to be using the Netscape 7 plugin (note:
ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so).
Although, IIRC, Netscape 7 is somewhat compatible to
Mozilla and
Firefox, but can you see if there is a mozilla or
firefox directory?
Further, there are 2 types of plug-ins for IBM's Java,
one compiled
with
GTK2 and another for netscape. Can you see if there is
a "gtk2" version
for Sun's Java?
There is only the jre which is rpm or extractable
install. Don't see a gtk one. Also there is a java
devl pkg which I installed per Fedora core 5 unoffical
faq
3. Open a browser window and type this in the address
bar,
"about:plugins" and hit <Enter> and see if you can see
the Java plug-in
registered.
I see everything but the Java Plugin
It's one more step to check if the browser has indeed
recognized and registered the plug-in, which means
that the problem
could be with the applet itself.

Error: Missing Dependency: libgssapi.so.1 is needed by package nfs-utils
I did a search online to find out what provides the files just to make
sure and found that nfs-utils-lib provides it. If I have that installed
[root@rt RT_Setup]# rpm -qa | grep nfs-utils
nfs-utils-1.0.8.rc2-5.FC5
nfs-utils-lib-1.0.8-3.1
why would it be giving me this error? I didn't have this problem until
tonight. I've been testing the build of the server this occurred on
over the course of two weeks and this is the first time this has
occurred. Is there a problem with the yum repositories or the packages
itself?

perl Tk
by Gregory P. Ennis
I am working on a gui splash screen for a perl background daemon that
identifies a successful or unsuccessful start up procedure for the
user.
I have been trying to use the perl Tk module and am having some
difficulty mastering it. Can anyone suggest a tutorial for this.
When I did some searching it appears that most of what is written for
perl and Tk was in the 90's. It also appears that glade and qt are
designed for C and C++. Are there other gui front ends that I can use
with perl?
Thanks,
Greg Ennis

RE: Still no Java
by Jeanette Russo
How far did you get with those intructins? That's what
I did, and it
works for me.
--
To be updated...
I installed all of it and it all went fine. I can run
the java console even.
This is the third Java install
I did yum install rpm install jr
Did the .bin install jre
and now the unofficial faq install and still no
working Java
Is this a bug or is there some configuration that
needs to be done with selinux like the 3d problem I
had.
I followd that exactly and nothing worked to get glx
working until I saw the selinux command on the
unoffical faq and boom I had working 3d
I am thining something is just stopping it from
working cause it seems to be set up right.

What happended to: Etherman, Interman, Packetman, Loadman, Geotraceman, Analyser?
by Dan Thurman
Hi all,
Back in the 1990's I have used these tools from Curtin University when
they were available for free in binary form and for Unix only platforms:
Etherman, Interman, Packetman, Loadman, Geotraceman, Analyser. These
programs were awesome (but a little buggy at the time) and now, 10 years
later these tools disappeared and no longer exist!
Yes, there is etherape modeled after Etherman - but I found Interman
a real interesting tool too. But this is not my question... why are
these tools no longer available from Curtin? Did Curtin decide to sell
these tools to some private company or gov't agency and/or did they somehow
vaccummed up and removed all these binaries from the Internet Community?
I can not find it ANYWHERE!
BTW: I have the binaries for Sun4c and still have my old sun4c system
and have no problem in starting it up and running these monitoring tools
but I am curious as to why and when are these very tools are no longer available!
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks!
Dan

Ron and all -
You are 100% CORRECT!
FC5 handled my motherboard swap just fine. When I pulled the old
mobo, I found that it was an older (vintage 2001) AMD Athlon. My new
mobo has a P4. Consider that the audio, video, ethernet, USB, IDE
controllers, and memory all changed. The only components left over
were the CD ROM, DVD writer, 2 HDDs, and the floppy.
The bootup was flawless. Taking earlier advice from Randy, I did boot
first into runlevel 3. I was curious how well even this would go
because I have this box on a Belkin KVM switch using the USB port on
the PC. The old mobo would not handle the keyboard at the GRUB
screen, but obviously would after the boot. The new mobo is happy
with the KVM switch even letting me use it to go to the BIOS setup.
FC5 recognized that X would not start, so offered to blow away my old
X config and run the configurator tool. That worked just fine,
letting me choose the resolution I preferred.
After a reboot, then WAHLAH! I was at the login screen. I logged in
and started to check it out.
Audio works just fine and am listening to streaming music as I type this report.
The USB ports handled my thumb drives just fine as well as my CD ROM
and DVD writer. No issues at all.
I am amazed at how well this work. The only manual intervention was
following the prompts for X configuration. Other than that, IT JUST
WORKED!
Well done Fedora Core team!

Tool to convert to RAID1?
by Les Mikesell
Is there a tool to simplify the conversion from a plain partition
to one that can be mirrored on the fly? Maybe I've finally found
something that is easier in Windows...
The reason I ask is that in the huge list of downloadable
VMWare appliances at http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/
there is one called the 'Reflection Virtual Appliance'
that boots a scripted fedora image which presents some
iscsi targets and a web server to provide the click by
click instructions of what to do on the windows side to
convert drives to dynamic, add mirrors, and sync to the
iscsi partitions. When the sync is finished, you can
shut down the real machine, boot the newly created image
and be running on vmware with only the downtime for the
reboot. It's such a good idea I'd like to be able to
do it from Linux boxes too - and it probably will work
easily if the system was built with RAID1. The hard part
is the conversion if it wasn't.

Audiocd missing from KDE 3.5.3?
by Charles R. Dennett
A few days ago I installed the KDE 3.5.3 updates to my FC5 system. KDE
had previously been at 3.5.2. Yesterday I went to rip a couple of CDs
using KAudiocreator and it failed, saying audiocd was an unknown
protocol. After a bit of digging, I downloaded the rpm files for both
3.5.2 and 3.5.3 of kdemultimedia. Upon comparing them it appears that
audiocd is in 3.5.2 but not 3.5.3:
rpm -qpl kdemultimedia-3.5.2-0.1.fc5.i386.rpm | grep audiocd
/usr/lib/kde3/kcm_audiocd.la
/usr/lib/kde3/kcm_audiocd.so
/usr/lib/kde3/kio_audiocd.la
/usr/lib/kde3/kio_audiocd.so
/usr/lib/kde3/libaudiocd_encoder_flac.la
/usr/lib/kde3/libaudiocd_encoder_flac.so
/usr/lib/kde3/libaudiocd_encoder_lame.la
/usr/lib/kde3/libaudiocd_encoder_lame.so
/usr/lib/kde3/libaudiocd_encoder_vorbis.la
/usr/lib/kde3/libaudiocd_encoder_vorbis.so
/usr/lib/kde3/libaudiocd_encoder_wav.la
/usr/lib/kde3/libaudiocd_encoder_wav.so
/usr/lib/libaudiocdplugins.la
/usr/lib/libaudiocdplugins.so
/usr/lib/libaudiocdplugins.so.1
/usr/lib/libaudiocdplugins.so.1.0.0
/usr/share/applications/kde/audiocd.desktop
/usr/share/apps/kconf_update/audiocd.upd
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/audiocd_extract.desktop
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/audiocd_play.desktop
/usr/share/config.kcfg/audiocd_lame_encoder.kcfg
/usr/share/config.kcfg/audiocd_vorbis_encoder.kcfg
/usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kioslave/audiocd.docbook
/usr/share/services/audiocd.protocol
rpm -qpl kdemultimedia-3.5.3-0.1.fc5.i386.rpm | grep audiocd
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/audiocd_extract.desktop
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/audiocd_play.desktop
/usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kioslave/audiocd.docbook
I didn't see anything mentioned about this in previous messages to this
list and googling for this problem turned up old reports on much older
versions of KDE but nothing recent. I took a look at the KDE bug
reports and didn't see anything there, either.
Did this get left out of kdemultimedia by mistake or was it on purpose?
If the latter, has it been moved to another rpm file? If so, which one
and if not, how do I get KAudiocreator working once again? Nothing I've
tried has worked so far.
Or, did I do something wrong?
Thanks for any help and let me know if more info is needed.
