[FC5] Random lockups and cpuspeed
by M. Lewis
I've been doing some reading in the archives about this and have some
questions regarding 'cpuspeed'.
1 - Is cpuspeed normally run on desktops as well as laptops?
2- One place tells me throttling isn't supported, another says it is
(see below) Which do I believe?
Thanks,
Mike
[root@moe ~]# cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/throttling

[root@moe ~]# cat

Configuring GRUB to boot FC-5-i386-DVD.iso
by philbrog
Hello,
I am currently running FC 1 and want to install FC 5. I successfully
downloaded the FC 5 DVD install image FC-5-i386-DVD.iso, and sha1sum
successfully matches.
Here's my fstab (the FC-5-i386-DVD.iso file resides on the /dev/hdd volume):
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660
noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto
noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/hdd /hdd ext3 defaults 1 1
Here's my grub.conf:
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hdb1
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Fedora Core (2.4.22-1.2115.nptl)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb
initrd /initrd-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl.img
How do I tell GRUB to boot from the file /hdd/phil/FC-5-i386-DVD.iso
(where /hdd is the mount point of /dev/hdd)?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

WORKAROUND: nfs-utils/librpcsecgss.so.1/libgssapi.so.1 dependency issue
by Paul Howarth
The problem that has spawned numerous threads today, namely:
--> Processing Dependency: librpcsecgss.so.1 for package: nfs-utils
--> Processing Dependency: libgssapi.so.1 for package: nfs-utils
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: librpcsecgss.so.1 is needed by package nfs-utils
Error: Missing Dependency: libgssapi.so.1 is needed by package nfs-utils
is due to a release candidate version of nfs-utils having previously been released into the updates-released repository without having followed the Fedora Package Naming Guidelines:
http://www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/NamingGuidelines?highlight=%2...
This "release candidate" version is now installed on many people's machines and is seen by rpm and yum as "newer" than the recently-released version that should be replacing it.
So rpm and yum do not want to replace the release candidate version with the new version that is linked against new versions of librpcsecgss and libgssapi.
Hence the problems.
What's hard to believe is that this problem is well-known and has been affecting people using the updates-testing and development repos, yet still the new release was made, which has precipitated these dependency issues.
Anyway, on to the workaround. I have rebuilt the latest nfs-utils update but have used a version number that will be seen by rpm and yum as "newer" than the release candidate. Hence, updates will work as intended.
I only have an i386 build machine, so if anyone can rebuild the package for other architectures, it would be useful.
Here's how to install:
# rpm --import http://www.city-fan.org/ftp/contrib/depfixes/CITY-FAN.ORG-GPG-KEY
# wget http://www.city-fan.org/ftp/contrib/depfixes/nfs-utils-1.0.8.z.RELEASE-1....
# yum localinstall nfs-utils-1.0.8.z.RELEASE-1.FC5.i386.rpm
# rm nfs-utils-1.0.8.z.RELEASE-1.FC5.i386.rpm
Before doing this, consider for yourself whether you trust me (someone you may only know from this mailing list) to supply packages that are installed on your system. If you don't trust me, don't do it.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=196359
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=197219
The long term fix will happen when upstream release version 1.0.9 of nfs-utils.

Core 5 multi display support
by Hadders
Hi all,
I'm thinking it would be nice to program with multi monitors. In
particular, one running VMWare and Windows so I can test the web app
programs I develop. Currently I use two boxes to achieve this. But the
constant twisting and turning isn't probably the best, yes age catches
up with us all.
However, I prefer Linux as a programming environment (especially seeing
that I do SQL development too (love that middle click copy/paste)), but
was wondering if it (Core 5) easily supports multi display and the
nvidia nView stuff, or is that a Windows only thing? Perhaps someone
can make a recommendation on cards etc?
Any help or comments would be appreciated...
Was thinking of getting this card,
http://tw.giga-byte.com/Products/VGA/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2235
a solid performer, but not excessive...
This was the blurb on the nvidia site about nView
http://www.nvidia.com/object/feature_nview.html
Cheers.

How Do I?
by Eugene Poole
First, let me give thanks to all who gave me answers on my xcdroast issue.
This time I don't have a problem, more of a situation.
I currently run FC4 with 2-disk drives, a 80-gig and a 15-gig. I caught
a great deal on a 300-gig drive and I want to swap out the 15-gig for
the 300-gig. What's on the 15-gig scares me a little:
/dev/hdc1 4031 1m blks /u03 - user data and database files
/dev/hdc2 4031 1m blks /u02 - user data and database files
/dev/hdc3 2023 1m blks swap
/dev/hdc5 2023 1m blks /u04 - user data and database files
/dev/hdc6 478 1m blks /opt
/dev/hdc7 1490 1m blks /var
/dev/hdc4 standard extended
partition boundary that covers hdc5, hdc6, and hdc7
Is there a way to do this without having to reinstall FC4? Where can I
find the documentation? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Xen questions on 32bit vs 64bit
by Mauriat M
I plan on purchasing a 64bit system. With that I still want to run 32-bit FC.
Will it be possible to run a 64bit linux on Xen when booted in 32bit?
(I know the inverse is true).
Is this possible? Has anyone done this? Is it fast?
