Via Velocity NIC inquiry
by Jay Cliburn
Looking for anyone running FC5 who's using a Via Velocity 6122 gigabit
NIC. This is on an Abit AV8 K8T800 motherboard. I just noticed the
other day while moving files across my LAN that the NIC is operating at
100Mbps instead of 1000Mbps. I ran iperf to confirm it, and ethtool
shows:
[root@osprey ~]# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ TP ]
Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full
Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
Advertised link modes: Not reported
Advertised auto-negotiation: No
----> Speed: 100Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Port: Twisted Pair
PHYAD: 0
Transceiver: internal
Auto-negotiation: on
Supports Wake-on: puag
Wake-on: g
Current message level: 0x00000002 (2)
Link detected: no
Turning off autnegotiation and forcing the speed to 1000Mbps causes the
NIC to report in at 10Mbps in ethtool.
[root@osprey ~]# ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off
[root@osprey ~]# ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000
[root@osprey ~]# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ TP ]
Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full

I've swapped cables and switch ports, and I've power cycled the switch,
all to no avail. My wife has an identical system running WinXP plugged
into the same switch, and her NIC reports 1000 Mbps.
My NIC in the past has run at 1000 Mbps, and I have an old iperf output
file showing performance at 476 Mbps.
Can anyone running FC5 validate their Via Velocity's speed for me before
I begin suspecting a hardware problem?
Thanks,
Jay

Searching List Archives
by Jim Moore
Is there anyway to search the list archives. I know there's been a
discussion on setting up oversize monitors and how to configure them,
but haven't been able to find it again.

Mouse pointer missing in FC5
by MLists
Hope someone might have a suggestion for me. I've just done installs of FC5
on two identical machines. The mice on both work fine throughout the
install, and work fine during graphical boot. However, once X has loaded
the mouse pointer disappears. The mouse is still working at that point
though, if you move the "pretend" pointer up to the top of the screen you
can hover menus, pull down menus, and select menu items. Needless to say
selecting items that are not at the edges of the screen involves a bit more
guesswork.
I'm sure in some alternate reality there is a linux user trying to figure
out why he has two mouse pointers on his screen... any suggestions on how I
can make the magical mystical mouse pointer come back to this reality where
it is wanted and needed :-)
Thanks,

developing using the firefox engine
by bruce
hi...
i've been trying (unsuccessfully) to parse/process html files. i'm almost
certain that the issue has to do with the fact that the html is not valaid
html.. running the html through various apps "tidy/html validator/etc..."
complain with warnings.
i'm not sure why the LibXML functions (perl) and tidy complain about the
structure of the page. i also can't see a way to get libXML to ignore the
warnings.
as such, i've been wondering if anybody else has had this issue, and how you
managed to resolve this in an automated manner...
using firefox, and the XPath plugin with the DOM Inspector, I'm able to
traverse the DOM for the web page. I can also create a XPath query that I
can use in the XPath window of the firefox plugin to extract/display the
correct elements/section of the page...
i'm curious as to whether it might be possible to use the firefox engine,
coupled with the DOM/XPath plugin functionality to parse the file from a
perl/command line app...
has anyone ever done anything like this, or heard of anyone who has... is it
possible to even programatically call the firefox app...
thoughts/comments/etc...

and yeah.. i've also posted to the firefow email list.. but thought it might
be useful to post here as well!!

[FC5] Epson Stylus C63 (USB)
by M. Lewis
I'm trying to setup an Epson Sylus C63 (USB interface) for a friend who
has just started using Linux. I've used CUPS (http://localhost:631). I
have not used system-config-printer at all.
Everything looks right, I see the printer listed, select what seems to
be the appropriate drivers, but yet when I try to print a test page, I
get *nothing*.
Probably something simple I'm missing. I've never setup a USB printer
before.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

kernel-2.6.17-1.2139_FC5 breaks promise drivers for _non-raid_ SATA
by Scott R. Godin
I'm running a seagate 250GB SATA drive as the main boot drive of the
system, non-raid. The motherboard apparently has some sort of deal going
that causes sata_nv to also load, but there are no ports on the
motherboard for connection. I wound up installing the promise card
instead to use the new hard disk:
$ lspci |grep -i promise
01:08.0 Mass storage controller: Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20575
(SATAII150 TX2plus) (rev 02)
dmidecode shows the motherboard Version: ASUS A7N266-VM ACPI BIOS Rev
1004/AA, and /proc/cpuinfo shows model name : AMD Athlon(TM) XP 1700+
Upgrading to the kernel-2.6.17-1.2139_FC5 release caused the system to
completely fail to continue booting; I got a long string of error
messages that never get logged because the boot process past the grub
bootloader never gets that far.
commenting out the new kernel (or otherwise choosing the previous
kernel-2.6.16-1.2133_FC5 release) returns the boot process to normal and
I am able to get in just fine again. Rushed this one out, did we? :-)

anyone else experience something similar?

I waited a good while, in case it was a mirror problem. Surely FC4
updates
hasn't been changed yet? I wasn't expecting a change before FC6 release
date.
I first saw the error around 10:30 today, but it's still there.
