Eth0 Fails Randomly
by Phillip Jackson
Running Fedora Core 5 on a Poweredge1550 server. Ethernet adapter fails randomly. When "ifup eth0", I get an error stating:
e100_exec_cb_wait: ucode load failed
SIOCSIIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted
Failed to bring up eth0.
Any thoughts?

Wget question...
by bruce
hi...
this question is for the wget guru!
i'm testing wget on a test site.. i'm using the recursive function of wget
to crawl through a portion of the site...
it appears that wget is hitting a link within the crawl that's causing it to
begin to crawl through the section of the site again...
i know wget isn't as robust as nutch, but can someone tell me if wget keeps
a track of the URLs that it's bben through so it doesn't repeat/get stuck in
a never ending processs...
i haven't run across anything in the docs that seems to speak to this
point..
thanks

Add to text file from command line via echo... possible to add to a particular line?[Scanned]
by Chris Bradford
Hi guys,
I'm making a setup script for my Linux boxes that re-install Openldap
and some other bits and bobs. I need to add some text to /etc/pam.d/gdm
for example, and it needs to be on a particular line in this file, not
at the bottom.
For example using the command:
echo 'session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel umask=0077'
>> /etc/pam.d/gdm
Will only add this to the bottom of the file, can I get around this, it
needs to be on the same position on all machines, ie line 8.
Cheers,
-Chris

correct fstab entries
by Jack Howarth
I noticed today a slight variation in the fstab entries between a
machine upgraded from FC2 to FC4, one clean installed with FC4 and one
clean installed with FC5. The first showed fstab entries like...
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
whereas the second showed entries like...
/dev/devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
and the third had entries of the form...
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
Is any of these form particularly more correct than the others? Thanks in
advance for any advice.

Java in VMWare with FC3
by Brian D. McGrew
I know this might be a rhetorical question but has anyone found a way to
speed up Java in VMWare 5.5 with FC3? All my C++ code runs at near
native speed (after the first execution) but Java, well, Java is a
different story; it's jut pig slow -- like 10x slower that running on
native hardware.
Using VMWare 5.5 with 512MB allocated to the VM.
Any ideas?
:b!

Dear List,
I need to install Fedora 5 on a set fo computers which are running just
Win-XP now.The systems have a CD-ROM drive.But I do not have installation
CD sets,instead have a fc5-DVD. I own a USB DVD writer.
How can I install fc5 to the hard-disk as my BIOS does not have the
ability to boot from USB devices.
Thanks in advance,

SSH: Postponed publickey
by SternData
I'm seeing this in /var/log/secure on "mooch" several times a day
Jun 29 02:58:27 mooch sshd[18069]: Postponed publickey for sdstern from
192.168.123.10 port 49104 ssh2
Jun 28 21:58:27 mooch sshd[18068]: Accepted publickey for sdstern from
192.168.123.10 port 49104 ssh2
Jun 29 02:58:27 mooch sshd[18069]: Accepted publickey for sdstern from
192.168.123.10 port 49104 ssh2
First, what's with the times? They're out of order. Second, what does
it mean that the key approval is postponed?
When I login from .10 to mooch, I'm using a previously generated key so
a password is not required.
