Strange DVD issue
by Anne Wilson
I burned FC6t1 to a DVD and verified it. The DVD automounts on insertion on
this box. I then tried to boot my old laptop from the DVD, and the drive
ground on as though there was an imbalance, unable to boot. I took the disk
to another box, and it booted to the install screen without problems.
I put a Knoppix DVD into the laptop drive, and that boots OK.
This is reminding me of problems reported on the Mandriva lists. As I recall,
it was said that two versions of boot were available, one on CD1 and one on
CD2 to get round the physical problems some people were experiencing. Is
this a real problem, or a figment of my ancient laptop?

Fedroa Core 5 Java
by Jeanette Russo
Can someone please help me troubleshoot why my
broswers are not using Java vm.
I installed the RPM's from Sun and they installed fine
and I can see them load when the machine boots.
But neither Firefox or Opera are using the java.
I am a kind of new user returning after being away
from Linux for the last 4 years
Thanks

############################################
I have copied the contents of the fc5 dvd to the root of the FTP server,
and changed ownership of all files to kickstart:kickstart (the user
called in the kickstart file)
However I keep getting an error when I boot from the FC5 CD using:
linux xfs acpi=off ks=floppy
Anaconda starts to load then displays:
Failed to retreive / ./repodata/repomd.xml
Failed to establish a data connection with the FTP server.
I am pretty sure the machine can see the ftp server as when I forgot to
start the vsftpd service on the server the error was very different. I
suspect that the client cannot see the required file.
Has anyone managed to get this working, if so how?!
Many thanks,
-Chris

Fedora Packaging Committee Meeting (2006-06-29)
by Tom Callaway
The Fedora Packaging Committee met yesterday (June 29, 2006).
Full minutes of this meeting and the full IRC log of the meeting can be
found here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Minutes
Here are the minutes from this meeting:
* All members in attendance, except Michael Schwendt, who has not
yet accepted (or declined) the invitation to join.
* It was agreed that all decisions by the Fedora Packaging
Committee would be decided by a majority vote of 6. Thus, a 6
member quorum is required. If the committee adds/removes
members, the quorum amount will be revisited.
* The moderator (TomCallaway) started going through the list of
open issues found here: Packaging/GuidelinesTodo
* On the first issue, libexecdir, the Committee voted to add text
to the Guidelines permitting the use of %{_libexecdir} in Fedora
packages even though it is not currently part of the FHS. The
issue passed with 6 yes votes, 0 no votes, 4 members
abstaining.
* The Committee also voted to recommend that subdirs be used in %
_libexecdir where upstream shows no clear preference.
Ultimately, the use of subdirs in %{_libexecdir} is at the
packager's discretion. The issue passed with 7 yes votes, 0 no
votes, 3 members abstaining.
* AxelThimm agreed to take the issue of including libexecdir to
the FHS on behalf of the Fedora Packaging Committee.
* TomCallaway agreed to write up the libexecdir changes.
* On the issue of mono guidelines, the Committee discussed the
confusing (and frightening) nature of mono packages at length,
and ultimately voted to standardize mono packages as
architecture specific packages that put their files under
%{_libdir}/%{name}. The issue passed with 8 yes votes, 0 no
votes, 2 members abstaining.
* On the issue of ruby guidelines, the Committee discussed the
draft guidelines, and voted to approve them as formal guidelines
and lift the hold on ruby packages. The issue passed with 6 yes
votes, 0 no votes, 4 members abstaining.
* On the issue of php guidelines, the Committee discussed the
draft guidelines. It was noted that there are still several key
open issues around the PHP guidelines. A vote was taken to
approve the existing guidelines, and this vote failed, with 5
yes votes, 0 no votes, and 5 members abstaining. This issue was
tabled, and put on the agenda for next week. JasonTibbs and
TomCallaway were tasked with resolving the open issues with the
PHP guidelines.
* As a result of the PHP guidelines not being approved, a
moratorium was placed on all php packages. JasonTibbs announced
this on the fedora-extras and fedora-maintainers lists.

LDAP Users unable to change passwords[Scanned]
by Chris Bradford
I'm using LDAP to authenticate to Active Directory.
Logins work fine, but I've noticed that none of our users can change
their passwords from the Linux boxes, but they can from windows.
I'm assuming this is due to an LDAP mapping, but I am unsure as to which
one.
I get asked for my kerberos password, then my LDAP password, then for a
new UNIX password. I then get the error:
The password you typed is invalid.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
-Chris Bradford

no kernel-smp for x86-64 now?
by Jack Howarth
I noticed that with the 2.6.17-1.2139_FC4 kernel kernel that there
is no longer a smp kernel package for x86_64. Is this because the
x86_64 kernel builds for FC4 have been changed to match the FC5 kernel
builds (where only smp kernels are built)?

xinetd fails on some services with Address already in use
by Jacques Beigbeder
Hello,
Distribution: FC4 x86_64, up to date.
Host: used an a NIS client (passwd: compat, and so on
in /etc/nsswitch.conf)
My problem: on boot, xinetd fails to start some services with:
(syslog output)
bind failed (Address already in use (errno = 98)). service = imaps
Service imaps failed to start and is deactivated.
bind failed (Address already in use (errno = 98)). service = pop3s
Service pop3s failed to start and is deactivated.
After analyzing, it happens that sometimes NIS requests use TCP/995 for
a *short* period of time. So:
- it is very hard to have lsof(8) displaying TCP/995 in use;
- but tcpdump displays traffic between my host and the NIS server
on TCP/995;
The result is that xinetd fails to start with all services!!!
My question: how to fix that?
(I really need imaps and pop3s and NIS...)

kernel-2.6.17-1.2139_FC5 won't sleep
by David A. De Graaf
With kernel-2.6.17-1.2139_FC5 my IBM T30 laptop will no longer enter sleep
mode. More accurately, it won't wake up. When I close the lid and later
reopen it, the old XFCE4 display lights up, but is frozen. Nothing works -
CTL-ALT-F2, CTL-ALT-BS. The only option is to press and hold the power
button to shutdown and reboot.
I was so proud of myself for finally figuring out how to make the sleep
mode work with the broken FC5. The documentation is mighty sparse.
If I create these additional files, sleep mode seems to work, although
I'm not sure that the battery drain is as low as it used to be:
/etc/acpi/events/lid.conf:
event=button/lid*
action=/usr/bin/acpitool -s
/etc/acpi/events/sleep.conf:
event=button/sleep*
action=/usr/bin/acpitool -s
Sleep mode just worked out of the box with FC4. I could leave the lid
closed without the charger overnight and there was still a charge in the
morning. I was disappointed to find that FC5 doesn't sleep correctly
by default. Now it doesn't work at all anymore.
Progress???
