Bad DVD or bad ISO?
by Redefined Horizons
I had some problems with my first attempt to install Fedora 6.
Thankfully I was able to exit the installation process and still boot
to Debian.
I'd like to try again with Fedora, but now that I've been part way
trough the install I've got a couple of questions.
The installer reported a bad DVD. Does this mean that there is a
problem with the physical disc, or that the ISO image itself is messed
up? I saved the ISO file on my other computer and I can burn another
DVD with it if I need to. Is there a way to find out if the ISO is a
fault. If it is I'll have to try downloading it again.
Also, when moving through the installation process it didn't seem that
Fedora recognized my Debian system when it came time to configure
Grub. I accepted the default configuration for Grub, because I
couldn't find a way to add the Debian as one of the bootloader
options.
However, it appears that Grub didn't overwrite my MBR entries for
Debian, becuase after I bailed on the Fedora install Grub loaded
Debian with no problems. Did I miss something during the install, or
should Fedora have notified me that it saw Debian when it was
configuring Grub?
I'm not at trying to complain in any way. I'm just want to learn what
I can about Fedora, and provide some positive feedback. :]
Scott Huey
P.S. - I had to use the text-only version of the installer, becuase I
only have 512 MB of RAM.

Humm, looked it up in the history and you are right. But it didn't make
any difference, and the menu's own editor is a no-op when you right click
on it. It doesn't even turn the mouse pointer into a busy pointer.
In /root/.config, re-running kbuildsycocoa --noincremental does not
generate a new menus subdir, a tree or ls listing returns:
[root@coyote .config]# tree
.
|-- gtk-2.0
| `-- gtkfilechooser
`-- menus.BAK
2 directories, 1 file
[root@coyote .config]# ls
gtk-2.0 menus.BAK
[root@coyote .config]#
And menus.BAK is an empty directory. I suspect I'm barking up the wrong
tree here, and the 3.5.5 version of kde has moved its K-menu file.
Now, trying to get creative here, I just did this at 9:48 localtime:
root@coyote ~]# kbuildsycoca --noincremental
kbuildsycoca running...
[root@coyote ~]# ls -laR|grep 'Dec 1'|grep kde
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Dec 1 01:55 kdesktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 384 Dec 1 01:55 kdewallet.kwl
-rw------- 1 root root 4937 Dec 1 09:48 kdeglobals
-rw------- 1 root root 244 Dec 1 01:55 kdesktoprc
drwx------ 5 root root 4096 Dec 1 09:36 kde
-rw------- 1 root root 163619 Dec 1 09:36 .kde.index
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1317 Dec 1 09:36 .kde.index.ids
[root@coyote ~]#
So kdeglobals is the only file carrying that timestamp.
Now to find it:
[root@coyote Desktop]# ls -l `locate kdeglobals`
-rw------- 1 502 502 3589 May 30
2002 /home/elmer/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals
-rw------- 1 gene gene 3630 Nov 19
22:53 /home/gene/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals
-rw------- 1 502 502 3589 May 30
09:51 /root/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals <--this one? Nope.
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1253 Sep 30 17:08 /usr/share/config/kdeglobals
[root@coyote Desktop]#
But, why has the timestamp been incremented, and why does it look as if it
has nothing to do with K-menus when looked at with less?
And I just used up that cup of coffee's IQ enhancement effect. AKA I'm
stumped again. I feel like I should revert about 68 years and
holler "Mommy, I want my kmenus back again! Now!"
So if anyone else has any insight to share, share away!

> Do I need to reformat the drive to ext3? Do I need to modify my fstab?
Yep. I got the same drive, and needed to reformat it to ext3. I used fdisk to
delete the exsting partition and make a new empty one, then mkfs to format
it to ext3 (not sure all that was necessary - mkfs might have been willing
to wipe out ntfs and replace it).
It has been working great for me.
If you want it automatically mounted at boot time, you will also need to
make an fstab entry for it.

Opening .dar files?
by Dave M
I am considering using Dar or KDar (and growisofs) on my desktop system to
do automated archival backups to DVD+RW media. Some questions:
What (if any) are the advantages of using Dar over Tar?
Are there any other programs (Linux-OSS and/or Windows) that can open .dar
file sets?
How stable is the .dar file format? Is it likely to be around for the
foreseeable future?
How well does Dar cope with media defects/file corruption? How much do I
loose if I loose one slice of my backup set? Can the rest of the set still
be restored without the corrupted slice?

Subject: Spamassassin & Spamass-Milter Problem
Hello All!
This is my first post to this list so please let me know if I have
posted this to the wrong list.
I have been running with spamassassin & spamass-milter sucsessfully for
several months. After the last update I am having issues with spam not
getting scored. Does anyone have any clue where I should go next?
Thanks!

Problems installing from DVD?
by Bill Davidsen
I have a new system which I'm using for testing, and installing
repeatedly. The first install worked, subsequent installs haven't worked
properly after the install was complete. I'm testing some xen stuff, and
it seems to leave the files in an undefined state.
After much testing, verifying sha256sum, and a BIOS upgrade, I
remembered hearing that there was a problem installing from DVD but not
CDs, but that may be folklore or FC5 "old news." In any case the first
install was from CD and worked until the next install, the DVD installs
all complete and run anything but xen in hvm mode for days, but botch
when running xen. Whatever happens leaves the machine unbootable from
disk until reinstall.
Coincidence, or is there really some difference and problem with the DVD
install?

Worked like a charm. Could you tell me if I should set my SELinux Security
Level at Permissive,Enforcing or Disabled?
This is just a toy home box on which I play, break fix and hopefully learn,.
I run my own iptables, but never got to know much about internal security. I
figured that if my iptables are in good order, I should not need much for
internal security. At worst, I have to re-install.
Many Thanks,

There is a remount command (I think, or maybe an option on mount) that
will let you remount root as read-write, or you could boot off the fedora CD
or DVD and type "linux rescue" and get to your root partition from rescue mode
to edit the file.

/dev/sdc is the disk itself, not the partition. It should probably be either
/dev/sdc1 or /dev/sdc5 (it will be 5 if it was an extended partition rather than
a primary one).
Running fdisk -l (with the disk plugged in :-) should tell you which partition is ext3
on it now.

Warning light on Fedora System
by WGregory
Thanks to the list, I am now able to play an audio sound and recording
from my Fedora 5 box to warn out our night crew of a problem (play
[filename].wav/ogg). I also would like to connect a warning light or
strobe to the system to provide visual warning. In addition to lan, I
have serial and usb ports available on my system.
Does anyone know of such a product? And how to trigger it to alert from
Fedora? Needless to say, also need way to turn if off from the Fedora.
