How to locate a bad block on disk reported by SMART?
by Mariano Draghi
Hi list,
I'm getting this e-mail daily, since a few days:
> The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:
>
> Device: /dev/hda, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
>
> For details see host's SYSLOG (default: /var/log/messages).
>
> You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
> No additional email messages about this problem will be sent.
From /var/log/messages, I can read this:
> Feb 1 00:20:38 home smartd[3612]: Device: /dev/hda, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
... and from and early SYSLOG (named messages.1), this:
> Jan 25 19:11:28 home kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
> Jan 25 19:11:28 home kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=33336872, sector=33336872
> Jan 25 19:11:28 home kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
> Jan 25 19:11:28 home kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 33336872
> Jan 25 19:11:29 home kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
> Jan 25 19:11:29 home kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=33336872, sector=33336872
> Jan 25 19:11:29 home kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
> Jan 25 19:11:29 home kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 33336872
> Jan 25 19:11:29 home kernel: Buffer I/O error on device dm-0, logical block 1581163
I remember getting and error that day doing a massive copy of a bounch
of files from one filesystem to another. But I moved so many things that
I don't know for sure which filesystem has the bad block.
I've been trying Google to find how to deal with this issue, and I've
found this document:
http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/BadBlockHowTo.txt
which explains how to find the sector, the i-node and the file, and how
to write zeros to it (to force the hardware to mark the sector as bad).
But I couldn't figure out how to find which is the faulty partition.
Besides, My root and home partitions are on LVM, and I don't want to
mess up any metadata... I mean, I don't know if the low level approach
described there applies flowesly to a partition into a LVM volume.
Could anybody help me sorting this out?
TIA,

Partial udev/hal/kernel recognition of usb storage
by meherenow@darkglobe.org
Apologies for this reposting, unclear if first posting got through to list.
It seems that FC3 can "almost" see the drive, it picks up the following
information when the drive is attached, but doesn't go as far as creating a
device point and a mount point...
Which files do I need to edit to make the final jump to a fully auto mounting
usb memory stick?
The stick itself is a 1GB Crucial/Micron USB 2.0 device. My machine is up2date
with all the current FC3 updates.
(ps it's formated as FAT and works under 'doze)
Many thanks.

Getting apt-get to work with FC3
by Shane Archer
I just installed apt on a fresh install of FC3, and I haven't been able to
get it to do anything.
Here's what I installed:
# rpm -q apt
apt-0.5.15cnc6-12.r362
When I try to do an update, here's what I get:
# apt-get update
Fetching list of repositories/mirrors...
E: Failed to fetch mirror list file:
(with nothing beyond the colon)
I have edited /etc/apt/sources.list with data from
http://www.xades.com/proj/fedora_repos.html to no avail.
Is there anything I could be doing wrong, or anything else I need to edit
(such as apt.conf, etc)? I have used apt on previous Fedora installs with
no problems, all I remember having to do was finding a working sources.list.
Thanks,
Shane

How do I make native OpenOffice.org file associations (sxw, sxc...) in FC3
by Whil Hentzen
Hi folks,
On my machine (at least), FC3 is missing file associations for the
native OpenOffice.org file formats. Gadzooks!
1. For example, when I list a directory that contains OOo Writer
documents (sxw extensions) in Konqueror, I see "Unknown" in the "File
Type" column.
2. When I right-click on one of those SXW files, the context menu has an
option for Open with..." However when I right-click on a DOC file, the
context menu has an option that says "Open with" which then offers
choices for OO Writer and KWord. I was expecting the same thing for SXW
(and SXC...) files.
3. I'm guessing that there just isn't a file association set up for SXW
files in FC3. The Open With dialog doesn't have a "Use this program to
open this file type from now on" option when I right-click on SXW files.
I looked high and low and couldn't find the widget that allows me to
create one. And I couldn't find one.
I've done a search on the fedora list on "file association" for the last
six months or so and didn't find any messages on this topic. So....
How do I create a file association for SXWs (or any other type of file,
for that matter) in FC3?
Thanks!

Multiple KDE applets on toolbar
by Bob Brennan
Is it possible to have 2 versions of an applet (KWeather in
particular) on the KDE toolbar?
In Gnome I can select Add-> and add as many as I want, in KDE the
applet is greyed out once one is active. I am hoping there is a text
file somewhere that I can duplicate the entry that launches the app,
but have no idea where to find it, other than in /home/me/kde* (?)
thanks, bob

problems installing sk98lin driver
by Donald Raikes
Hello,
I have been having problems trying to install the sk98lin driver from
syskonnect for my marvell technology gigabyte NIC.
I get the following error:
/tmp/Sk98IIMnMPGPmRfmACgkTUacZ/all/sky2.c:1519: warning: implicit
declaration of function `pci_dma_sync_single'
while running the install.sh script to compile and install the module.
Has anyone had any success installing this module?

GIMP File Dialogues
by Jonathan Allen
G'day All,
Re: Gimp on FC3
I have managed to get OO using the 'normal' file dialogues by selecting
the option to use the OO dialogues, but I can't find the same sort of
option in GIMP. How can I use the standard dialogues that I can just
type a full path-name into, in GIMP ?

Re: How can i find out, what files a RPM is provding?

<gmureddu(a)prodigy.net.mx> wrote:
>> What about rpm -qpl /path/to/package.rpm?
-qpl will show you the files that are provided by a package which is
yet uninstalled.
This doesn't really help the original poster. He already has the file
on his system, he just wants to know which package it came from.
I think the larger issue here is that if the file is installed on his
system as a result of doing a straight build rather than through
installation of a package, then the rpm queries may not help since
they will refer to RPMs internal database. That data is only updated
when RPM transactions occur, and if he did a straight build, he didn't
use RPM to install it.
He specifically mentions the file name "Tar.pm" and says that he's
sure it must have been installed using RPM via yum. And basically he
was simply asking two questions:
1> Is Tar.pm installed on my system, and
2> Which package installed it.
The answer to question 1 can be found by using locate. If need be, run
updatedb first to update the locate database, and then use "locate
Tar.pm" to find any matches.
The answer to the second question can be found by using my original
solution, "rpm -q --whatprovides /path/to/Tar.pm" (and of course use
the correct path).
If it was truly installed via RPM, then the RPM data would maintain
the information about which package installed it.
