Fedora 2 install over NFS
by Ben Halicki
Hi all,
just wondering if anyone has any experience with a FC2 install over NFS? I
have tested it on a few machines and for some reason seems to be
ridiculously slow. Unusual?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben.

Oeps, had the wrong subject line in the previous reply, sorry about that.
Thank you for the reply. There is Firefox 0.9 and Mozilla 1.7.3 (both
64-bits) installed already. How can I remove for example Mozilla (when I
do a rpm -qa mozilla I get a whole load full of RPM's) and/or replace it
with a 32-bits version?
What directory does Firefox use for its plugins??
Thanks in advance, Angelo

Unmounting Filesystem problems after removing USB drive
by Dan Kovacik
Dear Sirs-
I have two Maxtor USB drives that I use for backups. I swap the drives
in rotation. Today I did not umount the drive before pulling the power
and yanking the USB cable.
The new USB drive can still be mounted and written to ... but ... df
is showing the drive to have 0 bits available (100% used), and the
best part ... taking down the machine hangs with the last line
reading:
"Unmounting Filesystem [OK]"
which I'm beginning to think is not OK.
This problems has persisted through at least 2 power cycles, and the
other drive has been locked in a safe until next year. How can I get
df to realize that I have a new USB drive?
Thanks,
Stan

new user needing advice
by Gyles Parry
I am new to Linux and have installed Fedora from a dvd on Linux Format
on a 20Gb partition as a secondary OS to WinXP Pro while I get used to it.
I need to learn a bit about the Linux enviroment, and to be able to
fully move across from Microsoft, I need to be able to use the programs
that I use primarily on my degree: Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver,
Director, Flash, Microsoft Visual Basic. Is there a way that I can use
these programs within Linux and produce cross platform output files.
If the answer to the above is yes, are there any really good books that
anyone could recommend that give a good overall explanation of Linux in
general.
Regards,
Gyles

Simple database application...OO.org?
by Arthur Pemberton
I was under the impression that OpenOffice now provides a database
application. Am I incorrect? Or is this app just not provided with
Fedora? Or can I just not find it.
Please advise.
Thank you.

Gnome Stock Ticker Applet
by Dan Trainor
Hey, all -
I got bored and started playing around, and I found the Gnome Stock
Ticker Applet. I can't find a whole lot of documentation on it, and
from the looks of it's webpage, I don't think I'd find much there, anyway.
My question is, is this supposed to monitor just the different markets,
or individual stocks? If just the individual markets, anyone know of an
applet that will ticker individual stocks on individual markets?
Thanks

fc3 new install not recognizing gigabit NIC
by Donald Raikes
TIA,
Don Raikes
Hello,
I posted a somewhat vague question earlier, so here are teh details.
I just purchased a new pc pentium IV 3.0ghz and it came with a 10/100/1000
NIC onboard the motherboard.
I installed fc3 kernel 2.6.10-1.741_FC3 on it.
Fedora is not recognizing the NIC at all.
I did lspci and got the following informatin:
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd.: Unknown device
4361 (rev 17)
I googled for Marvell technology group and discovered that I should be using
teh sk98lin driver, so I added teh following to my /etc/modprobe.conf file:
alias eth0 sk98lin
I then did a rmmod eth0
rmmod sk98lin
modprobe eth0
I got no response to any of these commands.
Next I tried:
ifconfig eth0
and got:
eth0: error fetching interface information: device not found
I also did a modinfo on sk98lin and got:
filename:
/lib/modules/2.6.10-1.741_FC3spksmp/kernel/drivers/net/sk98lin/sk98lin.ko
author: Mirko Lindner <mlindner(a)syskonnect.de>
description: SysKonnect SK-NET Gigabit Ethernet SK-98xx driver
license: GPL
vermagic: 2.6.10-1.741_FC3spksmp SMP 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-3.4
depends:
srcversion: 511B14479B0351A2F2C3D8C
I did go to syskonnect.com and download their latest sk98lin driver and
tried to install it, but it generates an error while trying to compile:
/tmp/Sk98IIMnMPGPmRfmACgkTUacZ/all/sky2.c:1519: warning: implicit
declaration of function `pci_dma_sync_single'
I'm now stumped.
Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Evolution 2.0.3 Display Problem
by David Cary Hart
Another reason to hate HTML mail. Suddenly, with no changes on my end,
Ev has kindly reduced the size of HTML text to the fine print in a used
car sales contract. It requires a mag. glass to read. There doesn't seem
to be a setting to alter this.
Any ideas?
Thanks
