Hi Pete,
Sorry things have been kinda busy at work so I haven't had much time to

OpenOffice java support
by Gedas
Hello,
I want to do some database stuff with OO.o and PostgreSQL. I'm trying to
turn on Java support in OO.o in order to add PostgreSQL JDBC driver and
I am having trouble with turning it on. In Tools -> Options ->
OpenOffice.org -> Security I turn Java support on and click Ok button.
Next time I open Options dialog and I see that java support is still
off.
I have Sun Java 1.4 installled and java binary in my $PATH. I use OO.o
1.1.3 on FC3.
Does anybody know what might be the problem?
Thanks

I have experienced something similar - a long time ago. If I remember
correctly I had a very old NE2000 card that sometimes ceased to work
until powered off. But that was not with Linux. I also had problems
with a very ancient Sound Blaster card. That was with RedHat around
about version 5, I think. My theory is that the problem is with the
hardware. The board hardware needs to be reset and this only happens
with recycling the power.

I had the same problem. Found the solution at
http://tvtime.sourceforge.net/problems.html
There can also be a problem with Canadian cable. There is a solution
offered at the same site.

Linux Sun's JVM needs improvements
by Gain Paolo Mureddu
As I already pointed out in another thread, I really think the Linux
JVM provided by Sun (even the latest 1.5.0) needs serious
improvements... Whether it be applications such as Azureus (Bit Torrent
client), LimeWire (p2p client), or web applets embeded in webpages,
whenever Java loads in Linux, it is such a system hog!! I've seen it use
as much memory as 400 Mb (according to top and ps) for an application
that in itself should not use more than a couple tens of megs, like a
p2p client... the problem is not the program which runs on top of Java,
that usually is under expected memory ranges, but the Java process
itself is the one that uses the most memory, plus it will begin to leak
sometimes... Looks as if the Linux JVM had zero garbage collection.
Sun should really take care of thier JVM if they want to make Java
succeed in *nix. Even their won JVM has many troubles running on their
Solaris platform... So this is more a *nix in general issue than just
Linux alone.

Volume settings not preserved, who's to blame?
by Sam Varshavchik
I find that my volume settings are not saved in FC2. I have to turn up the
volume every time I log in. Examining the volume control settings, it looks
like that all settings are saved, except for the "PCM" setting.
Who do I file this bug against?

FC3 and ThinkPad T41 - current and prior kernels and other problems.
by Chris Ruprecht
Hi all,
I upgraded my T41 with the latest kernel this morning. It crashes during
startup when it tries to start X without any error messages.
Ctrl-Alt-F1 gets me nowhere. I also have not disabled Ctrl-ALT-Del for
these situations but it's not reactling either. The machine can not
bepinged' from another machine either.
I'm back on build 724 and most things work, Firefox still crashes from
time to time and X still terminates without warning every now and then.
So far, I have not been able to establish a pattern.
VMWare seems to make the kernel panic on occasion (Panic message doesn't
appear on the X11 screen but the caps-lock LED starts flashing,
indicating a panic).
I already have lm_sensors disabled.
Any ideas to make the T41 more stable will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Gigabit ethernet RTL8169 problems with kernel 2.6.10-1.760?
by Deron Meranda
After updating to the latest kernel, 2.6.10-1.760_FC3, I rebooted
(without cycling the power) and something strange happened.
My gigabit ethernet card (RTL8169 chipset on PCI card) simply
did not work at all. The TCP stack seemed fine, but no Ethernet
frames would ever go out. No arp resolutions would even happen,
nor anything else. No amount of bringing down or up the interface
(eth0) worked, nor bringing up or down the link (ip link set ...).
I noticed that the activity lights on my gigabit switch for that
port were continuously busy; but no traffic was entering any
other ports. I examined the syslog and nothing out of place
was found, except the expected things like NFS mounts failing.
I finally powered the system completely off then on, and it has
been behaving correctly ever since. No network cables were
touched nor was the switch reset. Thus, this is no longer an
immediate problem for me. But I wanted to report this in case
there is some kind of linux problem and not just a freak occurrence.
Has anybody else seen something like this?

Dell gx260 pci video panic
by Doug Dressler
I am having problems installing Fedora Core 3 on a
Dell Optiplex GX260 when I have a PCI video card
installed.
Once it gets past the initial boot screen, I get a
Kernel panic.
This only happens when I have a PCI video card
installed. I have tried 2 different nvidia cards as
well as an old S3 Virge card I had lying around with
the same result.
Now, I know this isn't a Fedora problem specifically,
because almost the same thing happens with Suse 9.2
and Windows 2000 Pro.
Suse gets through the installer, but panics on the
first boot. I tried to boot an existing installation
of windows after installing the card and it failed to
boot all the way as well.
I have also tried it with another Optiplex GX260, and
the same thing happened there.
It looks like the panic occurs at different times, but
usually right after agpgart or USB-UHCI loads.
Some times, there are pages and pages of errors before
it locks up, and I don't know how to access that
information.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks,
Doug

Stuck at 'Configuring Kernel Parameters'
by Vibhu Rishi
Hi,
I was playing around with the FC3 system at home and using 'setup' I
disabled a few services to see if I can speed up the system.
Unfortunately, now, when I reboot I get the following message after the
initializing audio etc message
Configuring Kernel Parameters
After this the system just refuses to budge forward. Its not hung as
when I press enter the cursor moves to the next line.
I am unable to get a root promt... I dont know how to get to one using
grub. Can someone give some suggestion as to what can be done ?
vibhu..
