k3b problems with NEC nd-1300a
by Nigel Wade
I'm having some problems with k3b since I changed DVD burners to a NEC
ND-1300A. AFAIK the firmware is at the latest rev. - 1.0B.
First off I can't write to a DVD as non-root anymore. The "Burning ISO9660
image" dialog box reports the error:
growisofs
-----------------------
:-( unable to GET CONFIGURATION: Operation not permitted
:-( non-MMC unit?
I get the same message if I attempt to read the mediainfo using
dvd+rw-mediainfo. I presume it's a permission problem somewhere, but where?
All that's changed is the burner. The /dev/ entries are the same.
Another problem is what is reported in Setting->Configure K3b... Devices. If
I look at the device properties as myself it says it can't write CDs or
DVD+ and Write Modes is listed as None.
Under Settings->Configure K3b... Programs it can't find dvd+rw-format. The
executable exists in /usr/bin, so why is k3b not able to find it? It finds
/usr/bin/cdrdao and /usr/bin/cdrecord so it's looking in /usr/bin ok. The
permissions on the executable are ok.
If I try to write to a 4x DVD-R I am only able to write at 2x speed. The
media is BulkPAQ orange which dvd+rw-mediainfo lists as:
# dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/hdc
INQUIRY: [_NEC ][DVD_RW ND-1300A ][1.0B]
GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION:
Mounted Media: 11h, DVD-R Sequential
Media ID: VDSPMSAB 01
GET [CURRENT] PERFORMANCE:
Write Performance: 2.0x1385=2704KB/s@[0 -> 0]
Speed Descriptor#0: 00/0 R(a)7.8x1385=10816KB/s W(a)3.9x1385=5408KB/s
Speed Descriptor#1: 00/0 R(a)7.8x1385=10816KB/s W(a)2.0x1385=2704KB/s
If I try the same for a Sony DVD writer I get:
$ dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/cdrom
INQUIRY: [SONY ][DVD RW DW-U14A ][1.0c]
GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION:
Mounted Media: 11h, DVD-R Sequential
READ DVD STRUCTURE[#0eh]:
MediaID: VDSPMSAB 01
Current Write Speed: 4.0x1385=5540KB/s
Write Speed #0: 4.0x1385=5540KB/s
Write Speed #1: 2.0x1385=2770KB/s
Write Speed #2: 1.0x1385=1385KB/s
and k3b on this system allows me to write a 4x speed.
Is the problem that the drive is reporting 3.9x rather than 4x? Or is it
that k3b just doesn't understand the format of the drive report?
k3b version is 0.11.9 with FC2 running kernel 2.6.8-1.521.

To follow on with this question, I have begun to use yum quite a bit due
to some problems with up2date. Is there a similar list and procedure
for yum?

System freeze ?
by Ted Wager
I am using a gigabyte mobo, athlon xp2600 processor and a nvidea
graphics card...I have 2 hdds with Libranet on one and fedora
on the other...I have tried several distros on this box and all except
Libranet freeze at some time...When the ststem freezes I can move
the mouse pointer but the k/board is totally locked and the kde clock
does not count down and I have to resort to the reset button.
Knotix,Slackware,Ubuntu and SuSE seem to crash within a couple of
hours but Fedora will sometimes last for a day or so....I can replicate
the crash by deleting mail in my inbox too quickly or calling up apps
from the task bar quickly will sometimes cause it to crash..
Memtest seems to rum forever ok and have tried the Mersenne prime test
and that is ok...I have also opened the case and forced fan cooling into
it but no difference...Any tips welcome...

Using Fedora Linux

Re: Install completed but boot failure
by Roger Lin
Thanks Paul,
I will try this after I get home tonight. Yes, I used default grub.
With my second install, I have only one drive the primary IDE hd-0, I
have deleted all the partitions and used auto partition option, it
still failed with the same error.
After I get in the linux rescue mode, is there a way I can check if
the master boot loader is there properly? When system try to boot
from the disk failed, would leave an error log somewhere such as
eventlog in Windows I can check?
I am new to Linux, really appreciate your help on this!
Thanks a lot,
Roger

please help testing festival package on x86_64 (and in general)
by Matthew Miller
The festival (text-to-speech) program in rawhide (fedora development) has
been updated to the latest version, and the 'exclusivearch: i386' was
removed, so it's now building for x86_64. (And ppc and ia64 and s390, for
that matter.)
I don't know why the restriction was there before before -- could someone
with one of these systems test the new package and report back? Thanks!

I was wondering if anyone was having a problem with script alias under
fc3?
Seems the cgi's aren't running if they aren't in the /var/www/cgi-bin.
Kinda odd...anyone else seen this?

Re: FC 3 -- Ready for Production Deploymnet??
by Roger Lin
I am sure the bios is correct, CD is 1, hd-0 is 2 and floppy is 3. I
disabled other boot device otherwise the drive with Windows would
boot. Without boot up the Fedora, is there any way I can check for
what's going on? Sounds to me it tried to boot from the disk and
failed, where can I check with errors if I can't even boot it up?
Thanks,
Roger

ACPI works fine on my 3 year old Toshiba Satellite using FC3 out of the box.
Not so well on my older Gateway Solos. They run into a year 2000 failure.

nVidia or ATI?
by SternData
I'm about to buy a new desktop computer, probably a Dell Dimension 8400.
The video options in my price range are
128MB PCI Express™ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon™ X300 SE or
256MB PCI Express™ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) nVidia GeForce 6800
I see post after post about issues with nVidia cards. Is this still an
issue with FC3? I'm not doing any gaming or advanced graphics, just
general computer stuff. My goal is to have a quality video experience
that works just as well in Linux as it does in Windows on the 17"
ultrasharp monitor.
