Firefox/Thunderbird: opening links in running browser new tab
by Mark Weaver
Hi all,
I know this has been discussed here previously, in fact I read the
thread in which it was discussed, however its been a while and since
reading this thread i've had to reload my system. ( new box ) Now, i'd
like to be able to make thunderbird load links into the running browser
on a new tab, but I can't remember how it is done. At the moment links
are opened in a brand new browser window. This is a pain and I'd like to
change this behavior.
been googling for hours, and have checked the archives, but I can't find
it anywhere. Could some kind soul refresh my memory?
thanks,

FC3 Sound stops working after Kernel upgrade
by jery_wang
I have just updated my Kernel to 2.6.10-1.766_FC3 and I have a silicon integrated systems [SiS] sound controller.
lsmod shows:
snd_intel8x0 33249 2
snd_ac97_codec 67489 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm_oss 47989 0
snd_mixer_oss 17089 2 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 93001 3 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 29125 1 snd_pcm
snd 52645 8 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 10017 2 snd
snd_page_alloc 9541 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm
Sound was working file with the 2.6.9-1.681 old kernel. Now when I use system settings soundcard detection it shows the correct hardware but I do not hear the test sound. Do I need to load the modules by hand?
Can anyone help :-?

Problems burning DVD
by Gérard Milmeister
Hi,
I just burned a couple of AVI-files to a DVD. This seemed to work fine.
I mounted the DVD afterwards, and played an AVI-file with mplayer. While
the video was ok, the sounds was completely noise. MPlayer produced
errors like:
big_values too large!
Blocktype == 0 and window-switching == 1 not allowed.
big_values too large!
big_values too large!
big_values too large!
big_values too large!
Badly interleaved AVI file detected - switching to -ni mode...
How can this happen?

Firefox Extensions Update Button
by Sandeep Shekhar_Prasad
Dear friends,
I have installed some extensions in my firefox browser provided with
the FC3 system. The extensions source was the mozilla update site. But, I
don't seem to find any button or link to update these installed
extensions, like the one provided in the version of firefox available from
mozilla website. Like, i need to update flashgot0.5.7.5 to version
0.5.7.6. Does any one know how to update these extensions automatically or
do I need to manually update them?
Thanks in advance ...

gaussian
by Nelson Brito
Hi there,
This is my first message to the list, so don't be too rough on me :-)
I am trying to copile gaussian 03 (a software for quantum mechanics on
chemistry) on fedora 3 but i am having problems with the library crtbeginS.o
ld never finds the file and i get the message
/usr/bin/ld: /crtbeginS.o: No such file: No such file or directory
I installed the libs that provide this file and the file is in
/usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/3.4.2/crtbeginS.o, apart from that i
installed compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.118 to have the older version of the lib
but ld still can't use it.
Needed to say that the "older" crtbeginS.o is under
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux7/2.96/ and i added the path to ld.so.conf
can anyone help with this please?
Thank you so much,
nb

Linksys WPC-11 wireless card
by Vincent Cocco
I have an older Linksys WPC-11 wireless card plugged into a Linksys
wireless PCI adapter on my Fedora box. I also have an ethernet adapter
plugged into a PCI slot.
Linux sees eth0 as the wireless device and eth1 as the 'wired' device.
In the network configuration utility I have the eth1 profile disabled
and also have eth0 to be disabled at startup; have it enabled at system
boot seemed to hang the system for a little bit before the device
failing then successfully booting the system.
The network configuration utility sees the card as something other than
a Linksys card; I believe it's attempting to read the chipset and
coming up with the closet driver available.
When I go to save my configuration info in the network utility and
attempt to start up the card I get:
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device eth0 ; Device or resource busy.
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device eth0 ; Device or resource busy.
Determining IP information for eth0... failed.
This particular card worked pretty well on my older RH 8 system running
on a laptop.
Has anyone gotten the Linksys PCI adapter/wireless card combo to work
on Fedora?
Thanks,
V

Thunderbird no longer send/recv'ing mail
by Dan Trainor
Hello, all -
I've been using Thunderbird for quite a while now, and I love it.
However, every 15-20 minutes or so, Thunderbird stops sending/receiving
mail. If I hit the "send/recv" button, it's as if the button is not
pressed. If I try to send an email after that 15-20 minutes, the
message just says "Sending Message...". I end up re-starting
Thunderbird 15-20 times a day.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what did you do about it?
Thanks

k3b problems with NEC nd-1300a
by Nigel Wade
I'm having some problems with k3b since I changed DVD burners to a NEC
ND-1300A. AFAIK the firmware is at the latest rev. - 1.0B.
First off I can't write to a DVD as non-root anymore. The "Burning ISO9660
image" dialog box reports the error:
growisofs
-----------------------
:-( unable to GET CONFIGURATION: Operation not permitted
:-( non-MMC unit?
I get the same message if I attempt to read the mediainfo using
dvd+rw-mediainfo. I presume it's a permission problem somewhere, but where?
All that's changed is the burner. The /dev/ entries are the same.
Another problem is what is reported in Setting->Configure K3b... Devices. If
I look at the device properties as myself it says it can't write CDs or
DVD+ and Write Modes is listed as None.
Under Settings->Configure K3b... Programs it can't find dvd+rw-format. The
executable exists in /usr/bin, so why is k3b not able to find it? It finds
/usr/bin/cdrdao and /usr/bin/cdrecord so it's looking in /usr/bin ok. The
permissions on the executable are ok.
If I try to write to a 4x DVD-R I am only able to write at 2x speed. The
media is BulkPAQ orange which dvd+rw-mediainfo lists as:
# dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/hdc
INQUIRY: [_NEC ][DVD_RW ND-1300A ][1.0B]
GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION:
Mounted Media: 11h, DVD-R Sequential
Media ID: VDSPMSAB 01
GET [CURRENT] PERFORMANCE:
Write Performance: 2.0x1385=2704KB/s@[0 -> 0]
Speed Descriptor#0: 00/0 R(a)7.8x1385=10816KB/s W(a)3.9x1385=5408KB/s
Speed Descriptor#1: 00/0 R(a)7.8x1385=10816KB/s W(a)2.0x1385=2704KB/s
If I try the same for a Sony DVD writer I get:
$ dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/cdrom
INQUIRY: [SONY ][DVD RW DW-U14A ][1.0c]
GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION:
Mounted Media: 11h, DVD-R Sequential
READ DVD STRUCTURE[#0eh]:
MediaID: VDSPMSAB 01
Current Write Speed: 4.0x1385=5540KB/s
Write Speed #0: 4.0x1385=5540KB/s
Write Speed #1: 2.0x1385=2770KB/s
Write Speed #2: 1.0x1385=1385KB/s
and k3b on this system allows me to write a 4x speed.
Is the problem that the drive is reporting 3.9x rather than 4x? Or is it
that k3b just doesn't understand the format of the drive report?
k3b version is 0.11.9 with FC2 running kernel 2.6.8-1.521.
