Problem with xemacs installed from a rpm of the DVD Fedora Core 2
by Stephane Dellacherie
By using the advices of James W. (see fedora-list
Digest, Vol 6, Issue 253), I succeded to install
xemacs from the DVD of the Fedora Core 2 by using the
commands
Go into a terminal as root:
mount /mnt/cdrom
(assuming that's your DVD drive)
cd /mnt/cdrom/Fedora/RPMS
rpm -Uvh Canna-libs-3.7p1-6.i386.rpm
xemacs-sumo-20040202-4.noarch.rpm
\
xemacs-common-21.4.15-5.i386.rpm
xemacs-21.4.15-5.i386.rpm \
apel-xemacs-10.6-2.noarch.rpm
I installed xemacs from the directory /root with the
previous rpm commands. Then, everything is correct
with xemacs if I go into a terminal as root.
But, if I open a file from the /home/dellache
directory with xemacs as a user being not the root,
xemacs opens the file but says that :
(1) (initialization/error) An error has occurred while
loading /home/dellache/.xemacs/init.el:
Symbol's function definition is void:
global-font-lock-mode
To ensure normal operation, you should investigate the
cause of the error
in your initialization file and remove it. Use the
`-debug-init' option
to XEmacs to view a complete error backtrace.
Another information : there is no .xemacs and .emacs
directory in the /root (and in the /home/dellache)
directories : then, it seems impossible to find any
file init.el to put into any .xemacs directory in the
/home/dellache directory !
Thank you to help me !!!
Stéph

RPM Builds and System Optimization
by David Cary Hart
Most of the Fedora RPMS are provided as i386. These can easily be
recompiled as:
rpmbuild --target i686 --rebuild package.src.rpm
a. Is it worth it? In other words, is there really a performance gain in
packages like - say - KDE?
b. Assuming that I installed the RPM sources and built from the spec
file, as long as I am at it, could I also benefit by changing some of
the FLAGS?
For example:
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

Dual Boot System
by Brandon Cirella
Is it possible for me to run a dual boot system but to have to insert a floppy to boot Fedora? My parents just want to be able to turn on the computer and have it boot Windows and not have to select anything. I don't mind inserting a floppy disk to boot Fedora. I'd have Fedora Core installed on a seperate hard drive but I'd want to be able to boot it only by using a floppy.
If this is not possible would it be possible to install it on a removable USB hard drive and plug in the drive and boot from the drive only when I use the computer?

cordless ps2 mouse (Trust 250SP)
by Ross Macintyre
How do I get a cordless PS2 mouse to work under Fedora core2?
I must be missing something blindingly obvious cos I would have thought
that I could have just plugged it in (replacing another 2 button PS2
mouse), and run mouseconfig, selected "Generic 3 button Mouse PS2".
The mouse in question is a Trust AMI Mouse 250SP Wireless Optical.
Do I need a particular driver?
Thanks in advance

The 'winblows' key...
by RoboticGolem
I never used FC1 so I dont know if this is something that started in
FC1 or not. However, I used to use my win-key for many many shortcuts
in RH9. Like win+<arrow> would move my virtual desktops, win-m for
mail, that sort of thing. It was a good way to use shortcuts that
wouldnt interfear with other applications. KDE doesnt allow me to do
this anymore. I click the 'custom shortcut' hit the winkey, it shows
win+ but then when I hit the next key win+m, it goes back like it
acknowledged it however, its only the m key, not win+m.
Does anyone know what could cause this? I used to have a custom
keymap back in 5.2 to get this to work, do you think this could help
me now?
THanks in advance,
Matt

Help needed -alternative method to install FC2 where CD1 no recognised
by Simon Tierney
Help please FC2 boots from the Mashita DVD multi drive but after I specify
language and keyboard type the system reads from the DVD drive then says
the FC2 disk 1 isn't present.
I have burned 3 of them, and it has been suggested that the installation
program lacks a driver for the mashita.
Can anyone tell me an alternative method to install FC2?
Thanks for any help.

[fedora] Apache and PHP
by Øyvind Lode
Hello there!
I have a Fedora 1 box running Apache 2.0.50.
I have installed it using Fedora RPMs.
A friend of mine has his homepage on my server and he have a PHP guestbook.
The PHP file is called guestbook.php and when users submit something in his
guestbook the php script writes that to a file called guestbook.txt.
This work just fine but he is worried by the permissions on the file.
The guestbook.txt file have the following permissions:
-rwxr-xrw-
Owner is the username of my friend and the groupowner is also my friend.
He have heard someplace that having such a file world writeable is a
security risk.
He tells me that the file should not be writeable for everyone but it has to
be or the php script fails I tell him...
But he insists that it's possible to use this php script and write to the
txt file without having all other users write permission.
He says that it's a way of just giving the script permission to write to the
txt file and that's a good idea because now everyone can do whatever thety
want to the txt file...
The only problem is that he doesn't remember how this was done and don't
know either...
How is this done by the Pro's?

Up2date not working
by Jonathan Allen
Hi All,
I have FC2 running on a machine inside our corporate firewall. The machine
has no direct Internet access but must use squid running on the firewall
machine. I started up2date, and it went through the setup-process for a
first-time connection. I pointed it at squid:3128 and it seemed happy.
However, when I tell it to go and start work, it puts up the following
process dialog:
Fetching http://fedora.redhat.com/download/up2date-mirrors/fedora-core-2/headers/h...
and sits there on a permanent basis. Monitoring the network, there is no
traffic and the squid log doesn't report any attempt to actually make the
access.
What gives ?
