Cups problem. "ReadClient() 5 IPP Read Error!"
by Steve Bergman
I have an ongoing problem with one of my clients' printers. It's an HP
laserjet 5. It is connected to an FC1 workstation parallel. It prints
mostly ascii reports and an occasional email or pdf from gnome. All
jobs are queued to it from the FC2 server that is running the accounting
programs and everyone's desktop. It mostly works OK. Except that every
day or two cups will spontaneously disable it. This seems to occur
after a particular job prints successfully. i.e. when I reenable the
printer, the job prints again, in its entirety. I have set up a cron
job on the FC2 server to watch for that disabled condition every 60 sec
and reenable the printer. For the most part, they get an occasional
duplicate print job. However, occasionally, the printer will hang, and
reenabling does not help. At these times there is a cups "parallel"
backend process trying to send to the printer, forever, but not doing
anything. The printer shows to be "ready".
I've replaced the FC1 box twice, the printer once, and the printer cable
twice.
>From the cups error_log on the FC1 box:
I [18/Aug/2004:13:01:25 -0500] Adding start banner page "none" to job
859.
I [18/Aug/2004:13:01:25 -0500] Adding end banner page "none" to job 859.
I [18/Aug/2004:13:01:25 -0500] Job 859 queued on 'okc_svclaser' by
'holly'.
I [18/Aug/2004:13:01:25 -0500] Started
backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel (PID 1664) for job 859.
E [18/Aug/2004:13:01:25 -0500] ReadClient() 5 IPP Read Error!
I see this when the printer gets disabled. So what is a "5 IPP read
error?"
On the FC2 server, I have a similar situation, where a job will just
hang going out the parallel port to an HP 4050 right in the middle of a
job.
I'm wondering if parport in Fedora is not ready for real use?
One other question. When cups disables a printer, why does it disable
it permanently. Why no retry after 5 minutes or something?

Soundcard configuration lost following a reboot
by Nick Pierpoint
My soundcard configuration is lost each time I reboot - thankfully a
rare event but annoying nonetheless.
If I reboot and run system-config-soundcard then everything is pretty
much fine. However, following a reboot the system will be silent again.
Does anyone know what system-config-soundcard actually does?
The content of /etc/modprobe.conf is untouched by by
system-config-soundcard when I run it - is this the expected behaviour
or is something awry?
I'm running FC2 - recently upgraded from RH9.
Many thanks for any help.

Gnome and KDE
by admin@kclinux.net
Has someone totally revamped KDE and Gnome in Fedora? It's like some
icons like Desktop Preferences and other apps are missing. Plus none of
the themes from gnome-look.org and kde-look.org work on this distro.

problem with Apache 2.0.50 on FC1
by Ronald Nissley
...or more likely it's an issue with my configuration. I'm trying to
setup name-based virtual hosts. In my case, I have two internal sites I
want to host (e.g. site1.mydomain.org and site2.mydomain.org). In
/etc/httpd/conf.d/ I have two config files (site1.conf and site2.conf)
corresponding to the two sites. When I attempt to visit either site via
a browser, only site1 is displayed.
'httpd -S' reveals:
VirtualHost configuration:
wildcard NameVirtualHosts and _default_ servers:
*:* site1.mydomain.org
(/etc/httpd/conf.d/site1.conf:4)
*:* site2.mydomain.org
(/etc/httpd/conf.d/site2.conf:1)
_default_:443 hostname.mydomain.org
(/etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf:99)
Syntax OK
If I uncomment the line 'NameVirtualHost *:80' in the
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file and restart httpd, 'httpd -S' yields:
VirtualHost configuration:
wildcard NameVirtualHosts and _default_ servers:
*:* site1.mydomain.org
(/etc/httpd/conf.d/site1.conf:4)
*:* site2.mydomain.org
(/etc/httpd/conf.d/site2.conf:1)
_default_:443 hostname.mydomain.org
(/etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf:99)
Segmentation fault
Attempts to visit http://site1.mydomain.org/ or
http://site2.mydomain.org still result in the same page (the home page
for site1). Note that the DocumentRoot directives in the site1.conf and
site2.conf files are pointing to different directories...and the
index.html files stored in those directories are not alike or similar.
Help would be much appreciated.
TIA,
Ronald Nissley

Fedora Core 2 and WinXP dual boot
by Beri, Rohit
All:
I have read a few post on how this is done and few things one needs to look out for... In my situation I have 2 hdd for my dell latitude, one running WinXP and the other Fedora Core 2, I was swapping HDD before.
Just yesterday I bought a media bay so I can plug fedora Core 2 as a second hdd. I was wonderding how to configure without formatting fedora core hdd to be able to chose which OS i want to boot to when I start the machine.
Any pointers ?
Thanks,
