[FC1] Changing screen background from script
by laurence orchard
Hi All
I have a series of digital photos taken with my camera using a time
delay of 1 min over two hours.
I would like to use these as a changing screen background on a 2 hour
loop.
I know how to change the background using the menu system, but I think I
need to use a script to do what I want.
Does anyone know of a program to change the background or the file where
the background picture file name is stored, so I can change it every
min?
Thanks

Firewire problems with iPod
by Perera, Nelanka
I tried to follow the gtkpod tutorial but had major hang-ups with getting my
firewire card working. When I first booted up after installing the card my
box hung at kudzu. The second time the card was recognized. Then I started
loading up the modules that are required, but when I got to sbp2, the box
hung. Next time I tried it, my mouse stopped working. I did a
rescan_scsi_bus, but did not find my iPod. I tried compiling a custom
kernel with the modules built in, but I got a kernel panic with grub not
knowing where root was. I had specified root=LABEL=/, then I tried
root=/dev/hda1 which didn't work either.
I'm using an Adaptec 4300 card, which is supposed to supported and works
according to www.linux1394.com. I'm on the latest kernel update,
kernel-2.6.6-1.427smp. Is there any pointers anyone could give me on this
problem? Is actually using firewire on Linux a lost cause? Is USB 2.0 any
more stable? Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

set environment language at login screen
by Shashank Sharma
Hi all,
I am using FC2. I have a graphical login set up and so
I can choose the environment language from the login
screen by clicking on the Language tab at the bottom
left.
By language for environment I mean that I get the
desktop icons and the panel all in my selected
language.
My query is, how to choose language if login is set
for init 3. I mean, how would I choose a language for
my session if I don't have a graphical login screen.

Fedora and IBM's OS/2
by Postmaster
Sirs,
I am running IBM OS/2 ver 4.52 operating system box with two NIC cards
and Firewall running a peer to peer TCP/IP/NetBios and TCP/IP file and
print sharing.
In the past I had 3 laptops dual boot WIN98 and OS/2. These worked fine.
Now I am moving the laptops to Fedora version 9. I have been unable to
get any access to the Internet or to see OS/2 box or other Fedora laptops.
The OS/2 box is 192.168.1.1 and laptops are 2, 3, and so on. All the
hardware in the laptops are supported by Fedora IBM Thinkpads 600e's and
an A21e. I have no idea how to get the Thinkpads with Fedora installed
to access the Internet via an OS/2 box and firewall or to share files
and dirs.
Help much appreciated.
Regards,
David

utf8 vs iso8859-1 speed/responsiveness
by Ow Mun Heng
Hi,
Current NLS codepage is set as utf8, I'm wondeirng if this is the cause
of the slower response of my FC2 system.
Anyone knows how to tweak this parameter to say iso8859-1 via a proc or
a sysconfig interface/file?
Does the change actually make a difference?

USB Key and Fedora Core 2/Gnome2.6 How-To
by Kanwar Ranbir Sandhu
Hi All,
I purchased a USB memory key to use in LTSP demonstrations for our
clients. Well, I had a difficult time getting the USB key to mount. I
searched the net, and I also followed a few threads in this mailing list
from people who were having similar problems.
The haze eventually cleared, thanks to something I read in a posting
here. But, it was obscure and didn't really make sense. In any case,
it helped me out and I was eventually able to mount the key.
In thanks, I wrote a simple and to the point How-To for using autofs to
mount a USB memory key on a Fedora Core 2 system. The How-To is
available here:
http://www.systemsaligned.com/learn/howto/hwtusbkey
I have noticed other How-To's out there about this very same subject, or
close to it. They are helpful too, but I wanted to write a How-To as
well with my own little slant to it. I know from experience that the
more there is written about an open source tool, the easier it has been
for me to get new things working. You can never have enough
documentation, tips and tricks, eh?
I hope those of you in need find it helpful. Enjoy!
Regards,
Kanwar

Subject: FC1 Killing processes
I'm running FC1 on a intel 1.7G CPU with about 700MB RAM.
We get the following in the DMESG were precesses are killed. This is a small
mail server serving about 3k messages a day. We run MailScanner SA sendmail
and Virus Checking.
My logs are supposed to be updated to a MYSQL DB but I had to stop this for
my server kills mysql and then everything stops. We aslo had a chaching DNS
but this was also killed.
The server starts fine and runs for a while then it starts killing
processes. This server run OK until we loaded fc1. Previously we were
running RH9
Where can I start looking for problems.
This is wat I got out of /var/log/messages

Hi,
Output from top and vmstat would be helpful to troubleshoot, sort top by
memory usage (shift-M) will probably give you some idea which process is
taking all of the available memory.

anyone live mp3 streaming from fc1 or fc2 using ices darkice or muse
by Joel Jaeggli
against and icecast2 server... The dependancies on specfic version of
vorbis or lame seem to be fairly daunting to build by hand.
some combo thats know to work would be a good stating point if anyone else
is currently streaming from fc1 or 2.

DVD audio ripper?
by Dylan Parry
Hi,
I have a couple of DVDs of converts and I would like to rip the audio from
them to convert to individual OGG files. I was wondering if anyone had any
recommendations as to some software that could do this for me?
I would prefer something with a GUI front-end, but command line would be
acceptable. It doesn't necessarily have to do the whole job, just ripping
to WAV would be fine as I can do the rest using oggenc in a shell :)
Any ideas?
