fresh install for dual boot with winxp : grub hangs
by Hans Horn
Dear all,
I'm trying to install fedora2 on a HP AMD64 box with winxp factory-installed.
I've got two disks, with xp installed on the first one.
after the reboot following the fedora install on the 2nd disk, all I get is: GRUB
using 'linux rescue' I tried to modify grub.conf with no success.
here's what fdisk tells me:
fdisk /dev/hda
/dev/hda hda1 hp-recovery
hda2 NTFS (XP boot)
fdisk /dev/hdd
/dev/hdd hdd1 swap
hda3 ext3 (Linux boot)
device.map says:
hd0 /dev/hda
hd1 /dev/hdd
has anybody got a glue how grub.conf is supposed to look like for grub to work on my system.
right now I'm pretty much dead in the water - can't boot into any OS!

by Lance.Spence@cox.com
Do you mind sending me the instructions you used to setup email with
Postfix or sendmail and dovecot? I'm been having a hard time setting up
email.

Well I just setup a sendmail server to receive and send and dovecot for
users to pull using either IMAP for POP3. It took about 30 minutes to
setup once I worked through some of the config changes in sendmail and
it
is working great. Postfix works well too and I would recommend it if
you
are not comfortable with sendmail.

mozilla mail faded text
by Richard E Miles
I am using mozilla mail to view my mail. I am recieving the digest
fedora-list mail. The mail seems to be presented in faded text for
signature portions and in some cases the header and subsequent message
body text also. It returns to normal when a quoted section occurs but
will go faded again when it hits a signature.
Is there a setting I can set to stop this faded behavior? I have tried
all kinds of character coding settings but nothing seems to change. It
would seem there must be some setting that I am missing to prevent this
behavior.
Any help would be appreciated.

I just downloaded the latest version from the Web site and it worked
perefectly.
Thanks to all who helped on this issue.
However, how come VMware did not notify registered users of this update?

Fedora - The Next Generation
by Roland Venter
Hi Folks,
I would like to hear your feelings on a couple of issues:
To start off I've been using FC1 on serveral servers since it's initial
release and have had little or no problems, only rebooting for kernel
upgrades, etc. Before a flame war starts, I agree that for critical
production servers you should be running RHEL. My problem is this:
Several customers are SOHO with less than 15 users and simply cannot justify
the cost of RHEL or they might as well be running MS SBS, (Some of them
actually believe the MS propaganda!)
I've been playing round with a couple of ideas:
Create a single CD Fedora installation with only core apps required for
business use, eg. postfix, squid, samba etc
Better inital setup, like a wizard after the install to add domain entries
to automatically configure postfix, samba and the likes, so after the
initial reboot you'll have a fully functional server.
Aditional testing of updates, maybe a separate yum mirror, so nightly
updates install only critical updates.
*important*
What I don't want is to reinvent the wheel, the Fedora community is doing
great work and we don't need to fork into yet another distro. This should
be something between the latest and greatest, FC2, and a stable production
environment - RHEL. (maybe if this all works, we can plough some of it back
into FC3?)
I'm not very fond of fixed release schedules, if it's broken, fix it and
release a new ISO, this will save us answering the same questions on the
list time after time.
By stripping down the initial install we can fokus on making Fedora better
and we can actually implement some of the suggestions on this list. Being
based on Fedora it should be easy to add additional components as required,
something like a minimal install and add what you need.
Your thoughts...
Roland

alsa failures on 2.6.6* kernels
by Brad Clawsie
i have been able to use alsa-driven utilities reliably on the stock
FC2 2.6.5 kernel, although on the recent upgrade to the 2.6.6* series
i have not been able to get any sound out of alsa-driven utilities,
although non-alsa sound utilities (xmms, realplayer 10 beta) are all
functioning correctly.
i have checked that all applicable channels are unmuted via alsamixer.
my driver is snd-emu10k1 for the sound blaster live card, which once
again functions correctly under the stock FC2 kernel. i have confirmed
and repeated my issue with the system-config-soundcard utility.
any clues?
thanks

Permission to write Windows partition
by Mingzhai Sun
Dear all,
I mounted my windows partition as /mnt/d, and /mnt/e. But it seems only the
root user can write on these partitions. I want to give some
other users the permission to write, but I can not do that. Do you guys know
how to do that.
Thanks in advance.

Xorg -configure problems
by Art Werschulz
Hi.
We are in the process of moving from RedHat 9 to Fedora Core 2.
When doing "Xorg -confirm", we get the following stanza:
Section "Monitor"
#DisplaySize 320 240 # mm
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "DEL"
ModelName "DELL P793"
HorizSync 1129329536.0 - 0.0
HorizSync 30.0 - 96.0
VertRefresh 842024000.0 - 0.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
(Yes, we are using a DELL P793 monitor.)
Not too surprisingly, X windows complained about the HorizSync and
VertRefresh lines. I removed the first HorizSync line, and replaced
the VertRefresh line with
VertRefresh 50 - 160
(These values were from the old XF86Config-4 file.)
X windows now starts up fine, and works fine. However, when one logs
out from the X windows session, a box starts wandering around the
screen, said box containing a msg complaining that the refresh rate
was wrong. CTRL-ALT-F2 (etc.) did not switch me to a virtual console.
CTRL-ALT-DEL did not reboot the machine. The only "fix" was to do a
hard reboot.
So, does anybody have the proper values for the vertical refresh rate?
Should this be reported as a bug, and (if so), to whom?
Thanks.
