FC2 - Hard crash when working -> read-only fs
by Philippe
FC2 - 2.6.6-1.435 - Gnome - Inter P4 2Ghz
Hi,
I just recovered from a hard crash as I was doing nothing special on my
computer. I managed to come back but believe me, I am still sweating !
I just need information to try to find what happened.
What I was doing : editing a file, some web surfing, evolution ,
downloading a file with Synaptic ... nothing special.
What happened :
* Editor : Cannot save my file : Read-only fs !
* Evolution cannot save also : read-only.
* Synaptic crash during downloading the new synaptic rpm : Read-only fs
!
What I did : Try to open a terminal to check mount/df/log messages -> no
terminal open.
Logout (full of nasty messages ..."Cannot save ... blablabla"
Shutdown : Full of FAILED/FAILED/FAILED
Reboot : Kernel panic.
Re-reboot : fsck error ! Have to run it manually.
I can log as root under #repair system . I can access my datas and copy
them safely in another place (other disk). No problem for this.
df showed me /, /boot and /dev/shm all with the same size include
available size, used size, etc !
I run e2fsck manually -> Some orphans and some inconsistent datas.
e2fsck OK
Re-re-reboot : I am back now after this time a good fsck at boot.
I checked all my logs ! NOTHING ! I think this is normal if all the fs
were read-only.
If anybody had this before, or any explanations to know what happened
and make me feel better, thanks a lot... anyway, I already feel better
looking at my intact $HOME ...
I am ready to investigate but I dont know where ;-)

How to determine scp Transfer Speed
by Ow Mun Heng
Guys,
V simple question which someone google can't find. I can find using
google about ppl talking about comparing transfer speed using scp and
ftp and wget (over http) etc.. but for the life of me I do not have any
idea how to toggle scp such that it will display what the current
transfer speed it.
All I get is
File-transfer %sent |### 1111bytes ETA

FC2 + umount of /initrd failed
by Ow Mun Heng
Do you guys get this?
/ is formatted as reiserfs. (I'm starting to wonder if the fs I selected
is the cause of all these _slow_ness_)
each time it boots, it would complain that it can't unmount /initrd and
it really is not unmounted. I can still do a ls -l /initrd and it's
there.
I can umount it manually after.
<code>
this is 2.6.7 (vanilla patched with cpu schedular + preempt)
$ cat /initrd/linuxrc
#!/bin/nash
mount -t proc /proc /proc
setquiet
echo Mounted /proc filesystem
echo Mounting sysfs
mount -t sysfs none /sys
echo Creating block devices
mkdevices /dev
echo Creating root device
mkrootdev /dev/root
umount /sys
echo 0x0100 > /proc/sys/kernel/real-root-dev
echo Mounting root filesystem
mount -o defaults --ro -t reiserfs /dev/root /sysroot
pivot_root /sysroot /sysroot/initrd
umount /initrd/proc
</code>
Any idea why it tries to umount the /initrd/proc directory instead of
the /initrd dir?
<code>
$cat /tmp/initrd-2.6.6-1.435
mount -o defaults --ro -t reiserfs /dev/root /sysroot
pivot_root /sysroot /sysroot/initrd
umount /initrd/proc
</code>
It says the same thing on the FC2(dafault)
2.6.6 kernel

RE: VERY slow NFS FC2 -> RH9
by Yang Xiao
Hi,
Are you sure they are all running at 100/FULL? Try set both interfaces to
100/FULL instead of AUTO.

VERY slow NFS FC2 -> RH9
by Gregory Gulik
I recently noticed that NFS between my FC2 client and a RH9 server is
horribly slow.
For example, copying an 11MB file from the FC2 client to my RH9 server
took 1 minute 15 seconds!!!!
The NFS mount is mounted with the automounter with options
"hard,intr,sync". The file system was already mounted before I timed
the copy so the automounter isn't the one getting in the way.
The load averages were low. The server is 0.50 and the client is 0.46.
The client is an Athlon 2500+ and the server is a Xeon 2.4Ghz with HT
on. The network is all 100Mbit switched with minimal other traffic on
the network.
Any ideas before I waste the next couple hours with tcpdump???

Serial ATA and UDMA
by Jonathan Rawle
I happened to be looking in dmesg and noticed the following:
SCSI subsystem initialized
libata version 1.02 loaded.
ata_piix version 1.02
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1f.2 to 64
ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0xC000 ctl 0xC402 bmdma 0xD000 irq 177
ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0xC800 ctl 0xCC02 bmdma 0xD008 irq 177
ata1: dev 0 cfg 49:2f00 82:346b 83:7f01 84:4003 85:3c68 86:3e01 87:4003
88:20ff
ata1: dev 0 ATA, max UDMA7, 234493056 sectors: lba48
ata1: dev 0 configured for UDMA/133
Does this mean that my SATA hard drive is operating at UDMA/133 rather than
150? Some sources say that UDMA7=UDMA/133, but some mention UDMA/150. Is
there such thing as UDMA/150, or is UDMA7 one step up from UDMA/133?
Could this an issue of my SATA interface not being completely supported?
It's the onboard controller on an 865PE motherboard.

Here's a link to the article I used to walk through the steps of setting
up sendmail. About the only thing I needed to worry about with dovecot,
was changing the dovecot.conf file to use pop3 as well as imap.

FC2 vs nVidia Latest Driver
by Greg Swallow
Ok, got the kernel installed, driver loaded and x running, but...
No logo at startx. Instead get garbage. Cursor/pointer is like one
square inch of garbage.
Looked into Advanced Options for xorg.conf and found some that get rid
of the garbage: HWCursor off, SWCursor on, and CursorShadow options. No
garbage, but only have a cursor when the pointer is sitting on the very
outside edge of a window.
Any ideas on how to get a pointer back?
Thanks for your support,
