Asus_acpi loaded on Thinkpad T21 - why?
by Gawrysiak, Piotr (GILW)
I noticed that on my Thinkpad T21 an asus_acpi module is being loaded (I see
it in lsmod output). As it (probably, I am not 100% sure) contains functions
specific to Asus notebooks (and not IBM's), should it be running? I checked
initrd and seems to me that ACPI module loading stuff is reather crude (just
tries to modprobe every acpi kernel module, without any checks - but, maybe
this is the only possible way)? Not that removing asus_acpi helps with my
standby problems :-)
Piotr Gawrysiak
PS.
And just for completeness and as a reminder, 'couse I asked it before here
:-) - I am still fighting with suspend and standby on this notebook. Anyone
managed to do it? For me APM suspend does not work at all (notebook does not
want to suspend after pressing Fn-F4) and while using ACPI echo 3 >
/proc/acpi/sleep breaks sound module (after resume AC97 driver complains
loudly and stops working) and network (e100 - at first seems to be working,
but after ~20-30 minutes drops connection and I have to remove it, and
modprobe again - btw. this helps only for the next 30 minutes and afterwards
the procedure has to be repeated :-) If the notebook has not been suspended
both sound&network work well). The ACPI suspend is also strange - I can wake
up computer only with power button, not Fn key... Anyone has any hints? In
fact it seems to me that 2.6 kernel in its current version is not really
mature for laptop use, and I am thinking about downgrading...

Finally! Successful install of FC2! Kudos.
by xyzzy@hotpop.com
After a bunch of problems, I finally got FC2 to install...
Congratulations to all that contributed to make this the spiffy product that
it looks like. It runs nice and fast!
FYI, the problems that I had, in case this makes a difference to anybody:
1. Downloading the DVD image to Windows simply refused to work. I used lftp
from Cygwin, and found out later that there is a problem with GCC 3.3 that
broke large files. Perhaps SmartFTP? I didn't have the patience, and just
used the 4 CD images instead.
2. I encountered the problem with the /sbin/loader hang (subject of a few bugs
in bugzilla). I am running a P4P800-VM motherboard with 1012 version BIOS.
I found out accidently (by just walking away in disgust and coming back
later!) that if you wait about 7-8 minutes, the boot of the install CD
continues, at least for my hardware. Some kind of SCSI timeout?
3. I notice that pptp-linux is not included in the Fedora distribution (it is
in Knoppix and Debian!) I need this because of how my ISP works. This forced
me to go back to Windows to get on the Internet to hunt down these packages.
I am still having a problem with routing information getting set, so my
Internet connection is not working in Linux, yet...
I am right now trying to rebuild the kernel source of the distribution so I
have things like NTFS enabled, etc...

Re: Nvidia Drivers again, (I'll be good I promise)
by Antti Aspinen
If you have 32-bit Intel Pentium 4 you should download and use Linux
IA32. Those letters come from Intel AMD 32-bit.
You can ensure that if you write uname -a in to console and you should
see a input about type of you Linux. The end part tells it everything.
It should be something like "i386 GNU/Linux" and you should download
that nVidia Linux IA32-driver. ;)

Synaptic downloaded packages
by Chadley Wilson
Hey PPl.
Given that there is an option in synaptic to download files only,
I was wondering if this feature could be used to install packages on a
system without internet access. How could I get the downloaded packages
from synaptic and save them in a local folder?
This would be very useful for depenancy problems at the remote station.
Thanks

Winmodem symlink
by B.J. McClure
I did not get a response to this issue from the list but did get a
solution from the folks at linuxant and thought I should post it just in
case someone with the same issue searches the archives.

OK, maybe it's just me, but I am having problems with the ISO Images. I have downloaded them, did the MD5 checks and they were good. Then I went and burned them to CD and none of the CD's passed the media test! Twice! AHHHHHHHH! I downloaded them from mirrors.kernel.org, but who cares if the MD5 checks, right? I am burning them on a Windows Box using Roxio CD Creator 5 and burning the image. But no good has come of it, twice. Talk about frustration! Any suggestions? BTW, I am not new to Linux or Redhat, I remember downloading over phone lines and using floppies years ago, so I am no novice to this. Thanks!

Yes, kmix doesn't control the line input correctly; aumix and alsamixer
(maybe) work correctly. Adjustments made to the line input using kmix
show up on aumix and alsamixer, but adjustments to line input made by
aumix don't show up on kmix. There seem to be some states of line input
that can be changed by aumix but not by kmix, and possibly not even by
alsamixer.
My version of kmix (version 2.0.1) thinks it's controlling alsa 0.9,
which isn't right for FC-2.
Any ideas?
Thanks - Jon
