Phil,
Thank you very much for your response. However, I am a novice. Can you
please mail me if you are suggesting me to run install-grub using the text
based install?
Thank you

fail to boot
by John linux-user
I am wondering why FC2-i386-disc1.iso/FC2-i386-DVD.iso failed to boot from my burned CD/DVD in all machines I have tried. Is there any file missed in these iso package? Thanks.

ClamAV 0.80rc3 and FC1
by Mike McMullen
Hi All,
Does anyone know if the FC2 rpm for ClamAV 0.80rc3 will work on
FC1?
I used up2date to get the RPM from CrashHat on an FC2 system but there
doesn't seem to be one for FC1.
TIA,
Mike

modprobe bcm5700 hangs with 2.6.8.1
by Sameer Kamat
Hi,
I have a AMD Opteron multiprocessor system with 3 network cards
and I am trying to configure the network with no luck so far.
The cards are Broadcom Netxtreme cards 5701 and 5704.
I have compiled the latest bcm5700 driver for the 2.6.8.1 kernel..
But when I run modprobe bcm5700 it just sits there
and hangs. No eth* devices are created. In the README file for the
driver source, it is stated that the driver is tested up 2.6.7 kernel build.
Would anyone please give me some pointers to help diagnose this issue?
/var/log/messages shows no other error messages pertaining to eth*.
Thanks,
Sameer.

2.4 kernel problem
by John Logsdon
I have FC2 installed from scratch on an Athlon system and I have been
trying to install a couple of 2.4 kernels (2.4.24 and 2.4.27) both of
which are bespoke. Both are compiled on the machine in question.
In both cases, the mouse does not start and the ethernet card does not
start. The boot.log message show:
network: ifup: interface 'eth1' not found
and
gpm O0o.oops(): [server_tools.c(76)]: Could not open /dev/input/mice
although the subsequent messages claimed that gpm and eth1 had been
started successfully.
As a result, X doesn't start and I can't network the machine.
It may be a header or similar problem - I have another machine that has
been upgraded from RH8 to FC2 without problem while FC2 of course installs
a 2.6 kernel.
Can anyone advise (a) if this is likely to be the problem and (b) what I
should do about it?
TIA
John

Subject: Dell Ultra Sharp 2001FP Flat Panel
I have Fedora Core 2 running fine until my monitor died. I decided to
by "Dell Ultra Sharp 2001FP Flat Panel" on recommendation of my
friend.
When booting, I was hoping that kudzu will kick in and reconfigure for
new monitor. It did not.
When I start X on the computer, I get following message from the
monitor
"1:D-SUB cannot display this mode"
How can I configure it ?
I try to start "system-config-display", but get same message above.
I connected this monitor to another (old) computer and started install
process and it did reconize it as
"2001FP (analog)"
So FC 2 does know how to talk (install fails due to disk space
problem).
Any suggestions, how can I configure this monitor for my main PC.
Usman

Re: input level when encoding CD's

I'm not sure, but I think many CDs use the full digital sample range
(which is a good thing if you think about it).

Exactly, though it doesn't do the peak volume tag needed for
clipping protection.

Google for replaygain and vorbisgain. They add tags specifying
a preamp adjustment based on the perceived loudness of a track/
album (using acoustic modelling, similar to that used for audio
compression). These values can be calculated at any time, and
do not destroy information on the track (it's a lossless
process). So you can apply it to your existing tracks. The
current version of XMMS can understand the tags (I think it's
down to the input plugin), not sure about the Jukbox or whatever
it's called.
To use grip to rip to vorbis, you're going to need to modify the
command line it uses. I don't have an example here, but the
places to look for info are: man oggenc (for the options to set
custom tags when encoding), the grip help docs (for the variable
containing the calculated adjustment), and probably the vorbisgain
docs for the correct tag names (or just vorbisgain some existing
tracks and use vorbiscomment -l). I prefer using vorbisgain
however, because grip does not produce all four tags (album gain,
track gain, track peak, and album peak).

multiprocessor support?
by Gustavo Seabra
Hi,
I am about to install FC2 in one computer that has 2 processors.
Currently, it's running on Linux 2.4.18-14smp. Before I make a big
mistake, I wonder if anyone here has experience with multiprocessor
machines... In other words, does Fedora Core 2 support dual processor?
Thanks,
