Installing FC3 on WinXP (Sorry)
by Lotsa Cabo
My apologies for asking a redundant question, however I don't clearly
understand if the problems I've read are with BOTH FC2 and FC3 or just with
FC2. I'll make it quick...
My configuration is this...
... WinXP SP2
... Laptop with 40GB (15 = win, 15 = free, 10 = swap for win)
... Partition 0 is NTFS a primary
... Partition 1 (on the tail end of the drive) is FAT32
If I want to partition the free space and install FC3, would I be in store
for any of the gotchas the other dual-boot WinXP folks are dealing with?
Sorry, again, and thanks...
R/S
Ryan

Modules
by Malcolm Candlish
Dear Sirs,
Having Fedora x86_64 core 2.9, I am about to upgrade to core 3 and would
like to know if I can boot the install with 'scsi dmx3191d.k' to engage
the required module to drive my scanner.
Currently my dmx3191d. module is not 'k' and will not engage. If however
I can augment it at installation, it would save all the problems I've
have trying to rebuild the kernel. Alternatively could I get this file
elsewhere and install it?
With thanks for your kind interest.
Malcolm Candlish.

cd recorder stopped working
by Tim
I added my win98 drive to my fstab and was getting an error on start up
that the line for the CD drive.
# This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details

/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto

There was a 1 between /media/cdrecorder and auto, when I removed it the
error stopped, but so did the drive. I get "can't read superblock
on /dev/hdc"
I upgraded from FC2 to FC3
Any ideas?
Thank you

Automount & FC2
by J
Hi All,
I'm currently playing with FC2, having moved away from Mandrake.
One thing I am struggling with... Automount isnt on by default..
Ie, when I insert a CD ROM, I have to open the user mount tool, and mount it manually before I can access it.
Whilst the system is booting up, I get "Automount - No Mount Points Defined". How can I get to turn automount on?
Also, another problem, I am trying to install extra packages using the add software wizard.... I mount the CD, and can access it with Konqueror as /mnt/cdrom, but the software installation wizard asks for the relevant CD, I click ok, and it tells me it wasnt found..... when in reality, it IS accessible by other means!
Any Ideas?
I'm not a Linux guru!
Thanks,
James Hill

How to purge messages in Thunderbird.
by VJ
Hi
It is a small question related to ThunderBird. I have set a property
in my IMAP email account settings due to which the messages will not be
moved to Trash when deleted, but will be marked as deleted. Now I want
to have something which is similar to Purge in Outlook Express to delete
the messages that have been marked as deleted.
I tried searching for it before writing this mail to the list.

by Øyvind Lode
Hi
I installed FC3 yesterday nut i muss a command...
Where is which????
I cannot find this command in /usr/bin/ which is the path in both FC1 and
FC2.
I solved it by copying it from a FC2 box but I'm just curious why which is
removed...

"> /dev/tty$i" commands in /etc/rc.sysinit?
by Robert P. J. Day
just perusing the code from /etc/rc.sysinit, and i'm curious about
the function of the lines:
> /dev/tty$i
for values of "i" gleaned from the mingetty lines from /etc/inittab (1
thru 6 by default). what does that redirection accomplish? i vaguely
recall it initializes the initial virtual consoles but i don't
remember in what way.
also, just after that, there's the code:
if [ $last -gt 0 ]; then
> /dev/tty$((last+1))
> /dev/tty$((last+2))
fi
and this does *what* for the next couple virtual consoles? and why
only two of them? i'm guessing it has something to do with
initializing the next two VCs to handle an X session, but does that
mean you can't have more than two X sessions unless you change this?
