Audio CDROM problems...
by John Burton
Greetings,
I've been having a bit of a problem with audio cdroms on FC3. I am
trying to "rip" some cds and store them on the hard drive of my laptop
(gotta have some tunes when traveling). The problem I noticed is that
after several CDs I couldn't eject the cd anymore. The "eject" button on
"grip" wouldn't work, and the hardware eject button on the CD drive
would not work (had to get out the old paper clip and force it to open).
No, I wasn't being impatient, I have grip configured to eject upon
completion and it wouldn't. I noticed in the /var/log/messages file that
prior to me trying to eject the CD, there were a series of error
messages for "hdc" of the form:
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: hdc: command error: status=0x51 {
DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: hdc: command error: error=0x54
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: ide: failed opcode was 100
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical
block 0
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: hdc: command error: status=0x51 {
DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: hdc: command error: error=0x54
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: ide: failed opcode was 100
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 4
Nov 30 15:48:37 traveler kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical
block 1
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: hdc: command error: status=0x51 {
DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: hdc: command error: error=0x54
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: ide: failed opcode was 100
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 8
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical
block 2
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: hdc: command error: status=0x51 {
DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: hdc: command error: error=0x54
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: ide: failed opcode was 100
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 12
Nov 30 15:48:38 traveler kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical
block 3
After seeing these in /var/log/messages, I was unable to eject the cd
except via the trusty paperclip. I noticed that if I insert the CD
before I start grip, I get these messages immediately when I insert the
audio cd. If I start grip first, and then insert the audio cd, I don't
get the messages right away, but instead get them sometime later. It
seems as though "hotplug" or something is trying to mount my audio cd as
a filesystem. I thought FC3 could recognize audio cds and not have a
problem with them...
any help would be greatly appreciated..

About VNC
by Jarkko Elfving
Hi...
I've some questions about VNC. I'm never been used it before.
Friend of mine (under my eyes, he's very, very good Linux user - I'm not
so good (yet :))) had tried to configure the VNC on Fedora Core 2 - with
no success. He had read everything about it, but still he doesn't get it
where something went wrong. VNC session on Linux-to-Windows works fine
without any problems, but not on Linux-to-Linux.
I've read some messages of yours but still I don't know how it works.
Somewhere I found a discussion where sayed that there must be an access
in the firewall (I understand that so, that default firewall settings
does not accept any VNC connections to anywhere).
Can you help me to build working configurations to VNC. Then I can help
my friend on with it.
Thanks.
BTW: Some of you uses a PGP signatures, what keyserver do you usually
use?

experiences with an upgrade
by Mike Zingale
Hi, I just recently upgraded my system to FC3 from FC1. It is important
to note that the FC1 install was also an upgrade from Redhat 9, so some of
the experiences I have run into might be from that. Hopefully some of
this will help anyone else who always does upgrades instead of fresh
installs.
Some observations:
1. system-config-soundcard was not installed. After the upgrade, I had no
sound, despite all the proper lines being in /etc/modprobe.conf
yum install system-config-soundcard and then running that seems to have
fixed this.
2. the menus were all messed up. Under the systems menu, was an
Applications, Games, Internet, etc. submenu. In fact, the Games menu
appeared under a lot of the categories.
I eventually tracked this down to the new Gnome looking in
/etc/X11/applnk and putting any directories in there in (seemingly)
random places in the menu. Deleting these made the menus much nicer.
3. evolution was not installed. Clicking on the mail icon on the Gnome
panel just brought up an error and then the default applications
dialog
4. even after updating udev to the latest version, the Nvidia
closed-source driver still has problems after reboots. Maybe this is
still the status of this driver, but I thought I read in the archives
that the new udev made things happy again.
So far, it seems a little faster than FC1 on this machine (PIII-733MHz).

As William Hooper posted, you can access the physical
remote desktop with VNC. It's great for training and
tech support purposes, but IMHO you would rarely want
to remotely access your own machine in this way. It is
less secure (someone walking by can see and affect what
you are doing), performance is worse, and mismatched
screen resolutions can cause problems.
You probably want a virtual normal desktop. To get that,
just edit the xstartup script in your .vnc directory.
Find the line that says:
# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
and follow its advice.

RE: Trouble with Netgear WG511 under FC3 on emachines 6805 (AMD64).

Just installed a WG511 cardbus wireless card in a laptop running FC2 yesterday. From what I can tell if your card is "Made in China" it is not supported !! Mine was made in Taiwan and works fine.
Go to this link and check out the last post by gradedcheese ... http://prism54.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=813

The correct module name is prism54. What happens when you enter "modprobe prism54" followed by "iwconfig"? "ifup eth1" should now bring everything to life. If the network is now working then change the alias line in modprobe.conf.

My WG511 works perfectly in my PIII laptop running FC3. I have no experience with the WG511 and x86_64.

OT apache question
by Michael Weiner
Sorry to be slightly off topic, however, i am trying to come up with a
good/efficient redirect in apache to basically take ALL requests to the
webserver and redirect them all to /index.html - except of
course /index.html requests themselves. I have been able to get
RewriteRule ^.+$ http://www.domain.name/index.html [R]
to work however that also matches /index.html. And yes, i have read and
am presently reading the apache org rewrite guide :)
I know this isnt rocket science but the answer is not striking me in the
face - obviously a lack of caffeine this morning. Does any one on the
list have an answer?
Thanks in advance

FC3: Gnome, Applications Menu, panel properties not modifiable
by A1tmblwd@netscape.net
I installed the Mozilla Web Browser but didn't find a launcher entry
in the Gnome Desktop when I clicked on Applications --> Internet. So
I did some searching, located the file
/usr/share/applications/mozilla.desktop and changed the parameter
"NoDisplay=true" to "NoDisplay=false". That fixed the problem with
Mozilla not appearing in the menu. I noticed, after making the change,
that the controls in all of the panels within the Applications Menu are
disabled. For example, when I right-click on "Firefox Web Browser" and
select Properties the controls in the Basic and Advanced tabs of the
Launcher Properties box are all greyed-out/disabled. All of the
launchers in the Applications Menu are similarly effected. With FC2
Firefox and Mozilla were both visible in the Internet folder and I was
able to change icons, descriptions, etc. What changed in FC3 and what
do I need to change to get this feature back?
Thanks,

Trouble with Netgear WG511 under FC3 on emachines 6805 (AMD64).
by Kedar Patankar
Hi,
I have an emachines M6805 laptop with WG511 cardbus wireless card. I
have an FC2 installation on this puppy and it works like a champ using
WEP. I am trying to install FC3 on this laptop and I can't get the
wireless card to work. I copied the f/w I am using under FC2 (which I
got from the XP driver) to /lib/firmware and inserted the line "alias
eth1 islpci_cb" to /etc/modprobe.conf. I also tried out the f/w
available from prism54.org. But the whole thing is dead - I don't see
any activity on the card - no blinking LEDs - nothing.
Has anyone else managed to get WG511 working under FC3? Or is it an
x86_64 specific problem? I do remember people mentioning success with
WG511 on FC3-T3 on prism54.org
Any ideas?
Regards/Kedar.
