Newbie question...
by Giuseppe Greco
Hi all,
I've just two questions:
1. Is it possible to update Fedora Core1 to Fedora Core2 just via yum?
2. What's the best way to update RedHat 9 to Fedora Core2?
Should running anaconda be enough?
Thanks,
j3d.

Can this go from FC2 to FC3
by Tim
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda2 9487672 4519336 4486388 51% /
/dev/hda1 101086 7789 88078 9% /boot
130 mb ram 300 mhz processor ( yes I only do one thing at a time )
It's pretty slow now with FC2, but will FC3 delete old files and have
room to upgrade? Basically I just read mail and word processing with
it. I have KDE installed but have never used it only Gnome, so there is
some more room if I knew how to remove the KDE.
Or wipe the drive and do a fresh install.
Or quit while I'm ahead.
Thanks Tim...

Problem with Webcam
by Hans Müller
Hello I have big Problem with my webcam. It will only work on FC1. With FC2 or FC2 i can only make
b/w pictures. Only at FC1 i can make color ones. When i try to use xsane in fc2/3 and select color
picture, and try to scan. I get only the message "Failed to start scanner: Invalid argument".
In the webcam is a OV511 bridge. The kernel driver ov511 is loaded. Any ideas?

FC and group names
by Mike McMullen
Hi all,
I've noticed in FC1&2 that when you create groups it won't allow mixed case
or all cap group names.
When I migrated from 7.3 and 9 to FC1&2, group names with mixed case came
over just fine. It's only when adding new groups that I get the following error:
groupadd: MyGroup is a not a valid group name
Anyone have any insight?
Thanks,
Mike

nVidia and 2.6.9-1.3_FC2 you want NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run
by Tom Mitchell
With the new 2.6.9-1.3_FC2 kernel my oldish
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run was a bit confused on where things
were. It would exit in one of the sanity check phases....
I downloaded the latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run then booted
2.6.9-1.3_FC2 to run level 3 and the .run package did its magic just
fine. Up and running: run level 5 and X. All is fine now.
Summary: Count to ten and download the latest .run from nVidia prior
to rebooting with the new 2.6.9-1.3_FC2 kernel. It will not be long
and the "repository" rpms will have been tested with this new kern
package by others so if you are a rpm package user for your nVidia
closed source (accelerated) driver install count to twenty and make
sure your 'rpm' will do the expected.

High Performance Squid - Howto
by Ow Mun Heng
Does anyone here has any pointers on installing a high performance
Squid?
Things which are deemed _important_
* # of File Descriptors (ulimit -n) But there is a current Max of 4096
for Squid. (on my gentoo sys, there are 50k+ file-descriptors)
* Cache_dir size to devote to caching
* storageio? Noted that it builds "ufs" by default. There's still
"diskd, coss, aufs & null) any ideas?
According to Squid.con :
aufs supposed to be an enhanced ufs which uses POSIX Threads so not to
interfere ith Squid's IO.
Diskd - Uses separate processes so not to interfere with Squid's IO
* RAM, I believe More is better. but how does one measure. If I want to
use a whole Disk to be used as cache, the miniscule RAM size will cause
bottlenecks and then squid process will get bloated and degrade
performance.
* per-client statistics should be off. (client_db off)
* What about running things like dansgguardian, ad_redirect, url_regex
I would appreciate and and _all_ comments

Samba hanging of FC3.
by WipeOut
Hi,
I seem to be having issues with Samba on FC3..
I have just upgraded to FC3 (clean install) from FC1 and copied my Samba
mounts from the fstab file that I had on mt FC1 install..
The samba shares are mounting fine but when I am browsing them it hangs
and the only way I can get it to respond is to reboot the system..
Anyone else having this?
Is there a fix?

RE: Authenticating off a Windows 2003 ADS DC with Samba/Winbind
by Rafiq_Maniar@Dell.com
How do I get wbinfo to use ADS? Surely it should just take its
configuration from smb.conf? I've looked at the manpage and
there doesn't seem to be any rpc/ads options.
Someone else mentioned that the domain TEST.COM may be a problem. I
don't think so, my nslookup's all work fine, and the DNS server
is running on the W2K3 box and it performs lookups purely for the
TEST.COM domain and doesn't forward queries anywhere.
Using krb5-workstation-1.3.4-7 as installed by FC3. I *think* my
kerberos is working ok cause I can kinit and login using smbclient.
Can't say I know anything much about kerberos though.

This is using RPC, not ADS. So that should fail.
What version of krb5 are you using? I think I couldn't get krb5-1.2..7
work with ADS. I had to install krb5-1.3.5 from source.
