Here is how I set mine up:
---/etc/cron.daily/update_repository ---
#!/bin/sh
MIRROR_HOST=mirrors.secsup.org
RSYNC_REPOSITORY=redhat
LOCAL_DIR=/var/ftp/pub
rsync -av --partial --stats \
--include "fedora/core/updates" \
--include "updates/9/" \
--exclude "redhat" \
--exclude "contrib" \
--exclude "beta" \
--exclude "fedora/core/1/" \
--exclude "development" \
--exclude "updates" \
--exclude "test" \
${MIRROR_HOST}::${RSYNC_REPOSITORY} ${LOCAL_DIR}
cd /var/ftp/pub/fedora/core/updates/1/i386/
yum-arch .
# Snipped the non-i386 specific stuff...
--- End update_repository script
The main thing you missed is the yum-arch step at the end. Delete the
./headers/ directory from the download copy then rerun yum-arch in your binary
directories (e.g., RPMS/i386, RPMS/i686). The rsync script is not optimal -- I
had weird errors trying to synch the correct directory :D. But it is working
here for me.

gdm fails to start X - but startx works fine
by Paul Pianta
hi people
i posted earlier on this but didnt realise it was a gdm problem - i think.
if i boot 'init 5' - i see a flash of the gdm login screen b4 X fails 6
times and says it will wait b4 trying again ... endless loop of failures
follows ...
if i boot 'init 3' - i can type startx as any user and everything is
great - no problems at all.
if i boot 'init 3' - and as root i type 'gdm' i get the same X failure
as if in init 5.
this leads me to assume its a gdm problem but i dont know what
specifically. i also get the following warning/error message while
booting that may or may not be related ....
"Mounting local filesystems: ERROR Could not detect network interfaces,
you must use a interfaces config line"
My eth0 loads ok and so im not sure what this error is referring to
any ideas?

I Know it's not advisable to cross-post esp when it's on a diff platform,
however, we are dealing with the offspring of RH right.
Besides, this list has more turnover and more ppl are reading this.. Shrike
list's well, I'm on it and volume is low. On average there's like 200+
emails/day. Somebody's bound to have an answer.
Besides, I've posted and helped out quite a lot here even though I use RH9
and not FC1.
:)
ps :I'm not hoping to start any flame wars or nettiqutte wars.

Umounting cd-rom: solution
by Fabio Rosciano
Hi everybody,
this is my first post here ^_^ !
Anyway, according to this gnome-bugzilla article:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=129684
I have tried to upgrade fam to version 2.7.0, and it does resolve the umount bug: the cd's are correctly ejected without complaints.
The problem is that I screwed up the rpm db: apt-get -f install wanted to uninstall whole Gnome!
This because gnome-vfs2 (yeah, nothing important) couldn't find libfam.so.0.
Sounds strange to me, because "locate libfam" gave the same output on various machines (I asked in #fedora to test this for me) and on mine with the 2.7.0 version.
Anyway, I uninstalled and put back the 2.6.8 RPM and everything went ok: the bug was back.
Hope the fedora team will release a fam-2.7.0.rpm soon!
Bye!

FTP, Win-NT, and xFTP
by Krikket
So there's a site out there I want to snarf a lot of material from. Let's
call it foobaz.net. (That's actually my domain, but for the purposes of
this discussion, it's good enough.)
While I was running Suse, I found that gftp just didn't work with that
site for some reason, but xftp did. So I used xftp. But now I'm running
Fedora, and xftp doesn't come with the distro, and I don't see it in the
apt or yum repositories.
When I ftp to the site, the system hangs when I attempt to do a "ls".
This *only* happens (and it happens all the time) when I attempt to use
Fedora gftp or even go to a shell prompt and run "ftp foobaz.net".
What I see is:
331 Anonymous access allowed, send identity (e-mail name) as password.
Password:
230-Backup Copies for Licenced Use Only!
230 Anonymous user logged in.
Remote system type is Windows_NT.
ftp> ls
227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,101,5,163).
And then it hangs. If I let it sit long enough, it also disconnects.
When I attempt to connect from a W2K machine, it can get through okay. It
also worked with xFTP.
So I decided to try installinf xftp on my box. Following the install
directions, I first ran xmkmf, which ran without a problem. But then
following it with the "make" command produces problems. They are:
krikket@galactica:~/llnlxftp2.1/sources$ make
gcc -m32 -O2 -pipe -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe
-I/usr/X11R6/include -Dlinux -D__i386__ -D_POSIX_C_SOURCE=199309L
-D_POSIX_SOURCE -D_XOPEN_SOURCE -D_BSD_SOURCE
-D_SVID_SOURCE -DFUNCPROTO=15 -DNARROWPROTO
-c -o abort.o abort.c
gcc -m32 -O2 -pipe -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe
-I/usr/X11R6/include -Dlinux -D__i386__ -D_POSIX_C_SOURCE=199309L
-D_POSIX_SOURCE -D_XOPEN_SOURCE -D_BSD_SOURCE
-D_SVID_SOURCE -DFUNCPROTO=15 -DNARROWPROTO
-c -o aconnect.o aconnect.c
In file included from aconnect.c:61:

str.h:62: warning: built-in function `strchr' declared as non-function
make: *** [aconnect.o] Error 1
krikket@galactica:~/llnlxftp2.1/sources$
Any thoughts on where to go from here?
(Unfortunately, it's not really an option to d/l everything to the w2k
machine, and then to the fedora box... Just because I can test things on
a computer at work doesn't mean it's a good idea to use it for more than a
short test...)
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I was hoping to get some help here. I have a Fuji Film Smart Media
reader attached to my USB port, and can't seem to mount it correctly. My
system sees it as sda or sda1 (I've attached a clip from my system log,
as well as a screen shot from the Info Browser). My former SuSE 9.0
system allowed me to mount it just fine as sda1. Unfortunately, I didn't
have the forethought to grab the info it was using (i.e fs-type, mount
point, etc...), before I ripped it all out to install FC1--there's
nothing like the school of hard-knocks.
Anyway, I'm aware that my camera is fully supported through the Digital
Camera Tool, which I think is _awesome_, but simple convenience and the
saved batteries drives me to my $12 card reader. I'm sure there's a
simple fix, but as I pointed out, I'm currently enrolled in the newbie
school of hard-knocks, the campus-in-hell. Seriously, any help would be
greatly appreciated, and if any more info is required, I'm sure I can
find it--I think.
