boot a live image from an ipod?
by John Poelstra
Working from this page http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD/USBHowTo
I don't have a USB stick yet to try this so I'm wondering if anyone has successfully used their ipod as a USB boot device? I am reluctant to change the partition flag on the ipod to be bootable because I don't have time right now to setting up my ipod again if it gets hosed.
Also curious if it is possible to have multiple live images on a flash device and boot different ones? If so , how would that be done?
Thanks,
John

NSCD, Fedora, and busted DNS
by Jon Masters
Yo,
Working out a few things that bug me about Fedora apps and DNS (many).
Specifically, handling of a busted network connection (I often reboot
with a vpnc-afflicted resolv.conf remaining...). So far, I can see that
the initscripts don't really handle a connection that's semi-up but not
really. I guess this waits for upstart/whatever. Annoying, but ok.
But most randomly annoying today, an strace shows that the Rhythmbox
application[0] thinks it's a good idea to do a DNS lookup *every* time
one changes track...lovely. Really stupid.
We have NSCD installed on my F8T3, why is it not running by default?
[jcm@perihelion ~]$ sudo /etc/init.d/nscd status
nscd is stopped
Jon.

should move with the times...like ditching use of cdrecord ;-)

Self-Introduction: Denis Ovsienko and /etc/net project
by Denis Ovsienko
Denis Ovsienko

Linux system administrator and developer
ValueCommerce/Russia
I develop /etc/net project (http://etcnet.org) and my goal is to integrate it
into Fedora Core.
I am a member of ALTLinux Team. /etc/net is already integrated into ALTLinux
development tree and should soon be seen in 3.0 version.
I know that ArchLinux has /etc/net in its repository. IDMS Linux did so too,
but i haven't heard from them for last months.
My skills include 6 years Linux experience, several programming
languages, 5 years of mixed software development and system/network
administration and so on, but I guess it's not related much to my goal now.
I have reviewed current initscripts buglist.
Some bugs are not bugs in /etc/net:
#65114 RFE: ifup-aliases iproute support, ifup/ifup-aliases scop...
#75390 it would be nice to tie bandwidth shaping into the networ...
#129820 initscripts maclist patch
#132252 Request for addition of routing rule config file
#132912 No additional IP addresses at ethX without aliased devices
#132925 initscripts use old ifconfig instead of iproute2
#154348 Adds support for WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) to the ifup...
#168990 No ifup-gre/ifdown-gre scripts.
#170884 MTU of ethernet card can't be set before interface is up
#171763 Enhancement to initscripts
Some bugs gave me ideas how to improve /etc/net:
#59114 .d-style scripts for ifup/ifdown
#119952 RFE: Add hook for "local" network initialization
#124045 Support setting a metric on interface routes
The whole process, if we don't face some unexpected problems, should take
3 to 6 months. What I need:
1. Ability to advocate patches (sometimes heavy) to about 10-20 FC packages.
2. Probably some help with documentation.
How can we start?

Re: any plans to make wireless more user-friendly in Fedora 9?

Till it works for all the systems Fedora targets (including those with
no permanent GUI session that also need network/wifi connexion) the
answer is no.
Right now NetworkManager is targetting a very small user niche, so
it's only usable as default in the spin dedicated to this niche (and
one could argue the spin desktop target audience is wider than the
laptop-only no-daemon dumbed-down desktop NetworkManager supports)

how to enable forbidden multimedia in Rawhide?
by Valent Turkovic
Is there a drop-in way of enabling multimedia in fedora 8 devel
version (rawhide)?
I wanted to pay for fluendo codec pack but they don't accept AmEx :(
I don't wan't to recompile anything.
AFAIK there are no 3rd party rpm repos that have multimedia rpms but
that would work for me great if there are any.
Any ideas how to enable multimedia in rawhide?
ps. I live in Europe so it is legal for me to enable multimedia.
Thank you in advance,
Valent.

Heads-up: lm_sensors will go to 3.0.0 for F-9, all users will need patching for new API
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
In upstream lm_sensors I've been contributing to a major new release
lm_sensors-3.0.0 . The major new item here is that the new libsensors4, which
is part of this release, no longer contains a database with all the properties
of the supported chips, instead it uses the new 2.6 sysfs interface to
dynmically query an hwmon driver how many inputs there are and which types
these inputs have (it drops 2.4 support removing lots of cruft).
This means that if a new kernel gets installed which supports new hwmon chips,
these new chips will be recognized immediately instead of that one first needs
to install a new lm_sensors release (if available at all) to get things to work.
The new libsensors also features a new cleaned up API (one can now ask
libsensors what the type (volt / temp / fan) of an input is, amongst other
cleanups).
Well enough propaganda, since lm_sensors-3.x.x is a major leap forward we
(mostly me and Phil Knirsch the lm_sensors maintainer) are going to introduce
lm_sensor-3.0.0 into F-9.
The plan is to introduce it at the very beginning of the F-9 cycle so that
there will be plenty of time to fix all using packages. A compat package for
the old version is possible, but not desirable, so we will go for a hard break.
I will be working on an lm_sensors-3.0.0 package based on rc2 + a few small svn
fixes the next few days and I'll post koji package URL's here as soon as that
is done, so that owners of involved packages have something to test with and
prepare there packages for this.
Here is the list of packages that uses lm_sensors on my system:
gkrellm *
ksensors **
gnome-sensors-applet **
kdebase
net-snmp
net-snmp-libs
* Patch to convert to new API is ready (written by me)
** I will take care of these as they are mine
As for those not taken care of, I'm always willing to help, please let me know
if you encounter any problems adjusting your packages to the new API.
Regards,
Hans

Rawhide is not targeting F8 any longer but F9, so every unstable
change that had to be postponed to stabilize F8 is hitting it right
now. The start of a cycle is its lowest stability point.
