CD audio: preference to limit drive speed?
by John Reiser
Is there a preference to limit the drive speed when playing
compact disc digital audio? I find that "eject -x 8 /dev/cdrom"
is much quieter than the full speed (such as 48x) that appears to be
the default. Would it be a preference of hal, nautilus, each player
application, gnome-desktop, or what?

Autoapprove watch* acls in the pkgdb (was Re: [pkgdb] bluez-libs: hadess has requested watchbugzilla)

It hasn't been asked before on the list but that's a piece of
code/policy that I have on my list to fix[1]_. No time like the present
to get some feedback :-)
Proposal:
I'd like to have watchbugzilla and watchcommits (and any other watch*
acls in the future) auto-approve. By example:
1) Bastien goes to the bluez-libs webpage.
2) Clicks the checkbox for watchbugzilla.
3) Request is sent to the packagedb which immediately sets the acl.
4) Bastien will immediately start being CC'd on all future bluez-libs bugs.
Does anyone have problems with this piece?
I'm also thinking that we don't need to be as complete about sending
mail when someone signs up for a watch* acl. Currently mail goes out to:
* fedora-extras-commits(a)r.c
* Package owner
* Package maintainers with approveacls set
I don't see a reason to send a message to the commits list in this
scenario. Sending to package owner and maintainers I'm hesitant about
-- on the one hand, they no longer need to approve the acls so why
bother. On the other, maybe maintainers want to know who has shown
interest in their package.
If you have opinions on this, please let me know!
Now that Bastien's brought it up, I'd like to start working on this. If
I don't hear objections, I'll start coding this towards the end of
next week (deployment to occur after F8 has been released.)

initscript "feature" questions
by Jon Masters
Yo,
Why do we do this in /etc/rc:
# First, run the KILL scripts.
for i in /etc/rc$runlevel.d/K* ; do
check_runlevel "$i" || continue
# Check if the subsystem is already up.
subsys=${i#/etc/rc$runlevel.d/K??}
[ -f /var/lock/subsys/$subsys -o
-f /var/lock/subsys/$subsys.init ] \
|| continue
# Bring the subsystem down.
if LC_ALL=C egrep -q "^..*init.d/functions" $i ; then
$i stop
else
action $"Stopping $subsys: " $i stop
fi
done
Specifically, why is there the broken assumption that everything must
relate to a daemon (which is now called a subsystem), and that this must
be first running with a lock file before the killscript can run?
On several other $random distributions, I don't have this getting in the
way of me running designated actions on shutdown, and I'd love to know
why it's done this way in Fedora - is this standards compliance or
simply a bug? I'm not criticising, but this wasted time with a number of
unneeded reboots before I went looking for why :-)
Jon.

We should try to avoid to much bureaucracy, but well, I feel a bit
uncomfortable with to many SUID apps in Fedora. Should we track them
somehow (a script that looks at the repo could likely create such a
list) and review the list now and then?
Or put at least a little hurdle between SUID bits and the Fedora-repo
with a "SUID apps must be reviewed/permitted by FOO" rule or something
like that?
Just wondering.

Crash on Gnome startup possibly NetworkManager related
by Caerie Houchins
Is anyone else getting a crash popup box when you loginto Gnome, then not
seeing the standand NetworkManager panel control? When I scan for the
NetworkManager process I can see that its still running, and the crash
window isn't really telling me WHAT crashed.
Could it be NetworkManagerDispatcher? When I tried to run that separately
it just does nothing (but the pid stays running).
I'm just trying to collect more information about this. I don't even have
enough to file a bug report as of yet.

Current problems with Rawhide
by Kelly Miller
Um, I meant to report these yesterday, but I was tired and decided to wait
until now. I noticed some problems with the packages currently in Rawhide.
I know Rawhide is supposed to be unstable (it's the development branch,
after all), but I figured I'd better report these, since the new version of
Fedora is only a few days away.
1) PulseAudio is horribly, horribly flaky. I dunno if it's because it's
the SVN version or what, but it crashed more times last night than it has in
the 5 months I used it before that. Is it normal for PulseAudio to consume
50%+ of the system memory?
2) knetworkmanager isn't working at all. NetworkManager works, but it
refuses to use the static IP address I told it to, instead choosing one one
point higher. Since my system requires a static IP to function, this is not
good.
