Long wait after FC4 install
by Gérard Milmeister
After the last package has been installed, the time left indicator
shows 2 minutes. However, I presume the installer enters the seconds
phase of yum install (Cleanup). This takes more than 2 minutes to say
the least. Even if there is harddisk activity, it would be better to
provide some feedback, just the same as with yum.

delrarpm in core or extras
by Joe Desbonnet
I have just tried the 'makedeltaiso' utility in the SuSE deltarpm 3.3
package . I was able to produce a FC5 i386 DVD ISO, Test3 -> Final
delta in only 300MB (10% of the size of the ISO). xdelta didn't
produce any savings.
I think these deltarpm utilities are well worth making available in
extras or core (I estimate a RPM of 200KB). I'd volunteer myself, but
I have no experience with making RPMs (yet). It also seems to be quite
stable right now. Source at: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/deltarpm/
Joe.
PS: if anyone is interested in that delta I mentioned above, I can
make it available via FTP/HTTP.

xenguest install problem
by Alastair Neil
I am attempting to install a FC5 xen guest on a FC5 xen0 host via http from
a server with a file tree copied from the DVD-iso I downloaded via the
torrent. The sha sum of the iso was correct. The host was installed also
via http from the same server with no problems. during the installation
anaconda bombs out with the following exception:
"GroupsError: No Groups Available in any repository"
I wanted to check here to see if there is a chance I am doing something
stupid before filing a bug report.

Re-enable r300 dri support
by Émeric Maschino
Hi,
IIRC, the device IDs of the r300-based graphics adapters were removed from the
kernel just before the FC5 release, thus preventing to enable DRI on systems
sporting ATI Radeon 9500 and above graphics adapters. When will these device
IDs go back into the kernel so that we can test r300 dri support again?
Cheers,
Émeric

Re: Wild and crazy times for the development tree
by Jonathan Dieter
I'm currently living in a country where broadband is expensive, and,
even if you have the money to pay for broadband, upload speeds are below
64kbps. Because bittorrent rewards uploading, I've found that
downloading through bittorrent takes roughly double the time it takes me
to download directly from the mirrors (and when my maximum download
speed is 256kbps, it means the difference between a little over a day
for FC5 and a little over two days).
I would suspect most people with slow upload links have this problem
(though I could be completely wrong). If that is the case, then the
torrent statistics will be heavily biased towards users with reasonably
fast upload links, and the users with slower links (who, like myself,
are probably downloading the CD isos for reasons mentioned by Mike
Harris in another posting) aren't accurately represented.
Bear in mind that this is all based on assumptions made on my
experiences which may be completely incorrect.

gnome 2.14 test updates
by Ray Strode
Hi,
A number of gnome 2.14 packages didn't quite make the FC5 cut. These
packages have been pushed into -updates-testing, now. For those
interested in helping, please give the new packages a test run and
report any problems you find with them.
If all goes well we should be able to push the updates that don't cause
regressions into -updates in a few days.
Thanks,
Ray

Polypaudio as sound server
by Pierre Ossman
Before the rumor gets started here as well, I though I'd just like to
point out that the polypaudio project is very much alive. Lennart has
just been a bit lazy about updating the front web page.
So to whomever is working on the sound server point in the future list,
please don't skip polypaudio just because our web page is old. :)
If there are any concerns about required functionality, we're always
open to suggestions. The synchronized streams point that is mentioned on
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FC6Future might be solved with our next
release (where multiple streams can be synchronized to each other).

Weird yumex & selinux.
by Tim Lauridsen
On a newly installed FC5, with selinux set to "Enforcing"
I have some problem when updating some packages with yumex.
I get some scriptlet error:
error: %pre(avahi-0.6.9-8.FC5.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 255
error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping avahi-0.6.9-8.FC5
error: %pre(xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.0.1-9.i386) scriptlet failed, exit
status 255
error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.0.1-9
error: %post(tcsh-6.14-6.fc5.1.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 255
error: %preun(avahi-0.6.9-3.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 255
The result is some packages have multiple versions install, other is no
longer installed.:
$ rpm -q xorg-x11-server-Xorg
package xorg-x11-server-Xorg is not installed
$ rpm -q tcsh
tcsh-6.14-5.2.1
tcsh-6.14-6.fc5.1
It is only in yumex the problem exists, i yum i get no errors. (yumex
uses the Yum API to do the real action).
I another FC5 installation with selinux disabled i dont have these errors.
Anybody got any ideas to fix there problems ???.

Wishful thinking - Try finding a notebook without an ATI or Nvidia
graphics card ...

Mine are not - I am working on 3d simulations/animations/visualizations.
For my applications, the nvidia driver outperforms the nv driver by ca.
factor 10. On top of that, for the hardware I have available, the nv
driver had been non-functional on one machine before FC4.

I am not talking about squeezing the "max" out of the latest and
greatest graphics HW, I am talking about:
- Getting 3D/GL functional at all.
- Getting a reasonable 3D/GL performance.
- Getting access to advanced GL features.
all on moderate to old graphic NVidia cards.

If you want to get a feeling about what I am talking about, try
SceneViewer (From Inventor, in FE) with one of the models from the Large
Geometry Repository, or try the Coin Examples from sim.no (Not in FE).
