Very bizarre upgrade with FC5
by RaXeT
I've seen some weird behavior for an upgrade, but this takes the cake.
Using DVD upgrade install of FC5 from a current FC4 test box exhibted the
following weirdness:
FC5 initially started loading the perfunctory drivers, then stated that the
media couldn't be found in the CDROM drive (which was running up to a point).
Prompted me with a pop up selection of the various media choices: CDROM,
floppy etc.
Then in an attempt to resolve the issue, I switched the media from the CDROM
to the firewire external Sony DVD RW drive. The install again proceeded until
we came to the Fedora Core bubbles splash screen which asks whether to do a
new install or upgrade the existing/found FC4.
When I proceeded with that upgrade, immediately an error message appeared
stating that the swap partition was missing in action and prompted reboot.
Any ideas?
I have been running FC4 test picking up all the updates along the way with yum
update.

gnome-screen-saver unlock artwork
by Thomas J. Baker
I have some inconsistencies across several machines with the artwork for
the gnome screen saver unlock window that I thought was due to different
initial fc5 test installs. Now that I've done clean installs of fc5
proper on the same systems the inconsistencies remain. On some systems I
have the themed fedora core 5 unlock window and on others I have a
simple grey box. I can't really do a screen shot because the screen is
locked. It doesn't appear to be user related because a new user on an
affected system still has just the grey box unlock dialog.
Has anyone else seen this?

Core 5 and Samba issues
by Eric Brunson
From a fresh install of FC5 I was joining my box to the office domain
and came across a few issues.
Let me start by saying, system-config-samba is a very good tool. It has
some holes in functionality, but samba has always been a thorn in my
side and this tool made it a whole lot easier. However, if I go to
Server Settings and select "ADS" for authentication, when I enter my
Realm it joins the realm line with the line that follows it in the
smb.conf which causes problems even when the following line is a comment.
Second, there seems to be an issue with SELinux policies and
kerberos/samba. When I've properly configured /etc/krb5.conf and samba,
then try to do a "net join", the action fails with the error "end point
not connected". Even selecting "Disable SELinux" for smbd, nmbd,
winbind and kerberos, the action fails. After "setenforce 0" the action
succeeds. After the "net join" is complete, selinux can (apparently) be
reset to enforcing.
Finally, SWAT is evil. I used it to add a printer and it obliterated my
config from system-config-samba. Is there somewhere to make a
recommendation to the user to use one or the other, but not both?

Unable to mount cd & dvd after upgrading to FC5
by Igor Jagec
Hi there!
I've just upgraded to FC5 (from FC4) and there is a problem. I can't
mount CD or DVD any more. I've never experienced that problem while I
was playing with Rawhide on my test system upgrading it to FC5, or on
clean FC5 install on my second test partition, but now on my main system
I have :-/ I know that "Fedora Core 5 now uses gnome-mount, a more
efficient mechanism that replaces fstab-sync, and uses HAL to handle
mounting", but it does not work after the upgrade via install media
(which went ok BTW). I even tried to run hal deamon manually, to play
with gnome-mount and so on, but all of that didn't help. I tried to 'rpm
-V hal', but I got no output. Is there any way to solve that problem
manually? To make hal to detect my hdc and hdd devices? Any help would
be highly appreciated.
Thanks. Cheers!

help with comps.xml
by Deepan
Hello everyone out there..
We am developing a customized distro for biotech people. It will use
Fedora as the base. so basically I edited comps.xml file .. that we pass
as argument to createrepo.. added more rpms to Fedora/RPMS/ and a new
category in comps.xml.. then executed createrepo, pkgorder, buildinstall
, splittree.py.. finally the new CDs produced by splittree does not have
my edited comps.xml.. and additional packages..

CD verify on FC5 disc 5.
by Russell Coker
I've been burning some sets of FC5 CDs for friends and verifying them. I have
observed that CD 5 takes an unreasonably large amount of time to verify.
After the "Media Check" window disappears the system hands while virtual
console 4 is giving IDE errors corresponding to logical blocks 189413 and
189414. After doing this for some time it returns and says that the test
has passed.
When burning CD-ROMs I put 80 sectors of blank padding to deal with crappy
CD-ROM drives. In the past I found that some of my CD-ROM drives would cause
the Media Check to fail if I used a mere 30 sectors of padding and so I chose
80 as an arbitrary large number to avoid that. The number 80 has done well
in terms of preventing check failures and install errors. Should I consider
the above failure to just be a symptom of an interaction between Linux and
crappy hardware and ignore it? Or is the fact that Linux is trying to seek
so far past the end of the disk due to a bug in either the kernel or
anaconda?

How does this affect Rahul Sundaram and his position? Not that I am
trying to butt into Red Hat's business or whatever, just that he seems
to be the voice of Red Hat/Reason since this beta cycle began and just
seeing who we will be talking to, and who will be making decisions on
things and such.
Maybe an explanation/diagram of who reports to who, and who says what
type thing? (as in , developers to Rahul, Rahul to you, you to a
committee, etc..? something like that). Might let us all understand how
this works as far as names and stuff *shrug*.
